Owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones often face a situation where typing is not the usual tactile sensation, which can be due to updating the firmware to a new version of MIUI or HyperOS, where developers sometimes change the logic of how system sounds and vibrations work. Tactile response is not just a nice little thing, but an important control that allows the user to feel the confirmation of each click without having to constantly look at the screen.
The lack of vibration can be caused by a variety of factors, from the banal shutdown of the function in the system settings to conflicts of third-party keyboard applications. In modern Xiaomi shells, the settings are divided between the system menu and the parameters of the input application itself. So if you update and no longer feel the response, you should not panic - most likely, the desired switch has simply shifted or been reset.
In this guide, we will take a look at all the possible ways to activate and fine-tune vibrations. We will look at standard system tools, settings of popular keyboards like Gboard and how to work in the new HyperOS environment. We will also focus on performance issues that can make the response belated or twitchy.
System settings of tactile response in MIUI and HyperOS
The first place to look in the absence of vibration is the global settings of sound and vibration of the smartphone itself. There is a separate parameter in the MIUI and HyperOS shells that is responsible for the tactile output of the interface, which affects the keyboard, and if this parameter is turned off at the system level, applications can ignore vibration requests.
To access the settings you need to go to Settings โ Sound and Vibration. You should pay attention to โTouch Vibrationโ or โTactile Response.โ In some versions of the firmware, it may be called โSystem Vibration.โ Make sure the slider is activated. Importantly, even if the keyboard itself is on, system shutdown takes priority.
Newer versions of the HyperOS shell offer more flexible intensity settings, so you can choose one of the modes or adjust the vibration force manually if your Xiaomi model supports a broadband vibrator, which makes the keyboard response more tangible or, conversely, barely noticeable.
It's also worth noting that in some scenarios, such as Do Not Disturb or Sleep, the system can force the tactile effects to be turned off to save energy and reduce noise, and check if you have one of these modes activated in the notification curtain.

The system vibration switch in the Sound and Vibration section is the master switch: if it is turned off, the keyboard will not vibrate, even when the setting inside the application is enabled.
Vibration settings in the standard Gboard keyboard
Most global versions of Xiaomi smartphones have Googleโs Gboard keyboard installed by default, which has its own independent settings, which are often confused after updating the application through the Play Store. To enable vibration, you need to go to the settings menu of the keyboard itself.
There are two ways to do this: One is through the gear icon on the keyboard bar (if it's output), and the second, more reliable way is through system settings: Settings โ Additional settings โ Language and input โ Keyboard Management โ Gboard. From the menu that opens, select Settings.
Inside the settings section, look for "Keyboard settings" or "Preferences." Here's the "Push Vibration" slider. Move it to the active position. Below you'll see the vibratory duration slider. Duration is a critical parameter: if it's twisted to a minimum, you may not feel the response on today's thick glass screens.
- ๐ฑ Open any typing app to call the keyboard.
- โ๏ธ Click on the gear icon in the top panel of Gboard.
- ๐ Select the item "Vibration when pressed" and increase the slider duration to 10-20 miss.
- โ Check the result in the quick typing field.
If the slider duration is at a minimum, increase its value. The optimal range is from 10 to 30 milliseconds. Values above 50 ms can create a feeling of "sticking" and printing delay, which negatively affects the speed of the type.
Why can Gboard not save settings?
Features of the Sogou keyboard on Xiaomi
The Chinese firmware versions, as well as many devices assembled for the CIS and India markets, pre-installed the Sogou keyboard by default. It's a powerful tool with a huge number of features, but its settings interface can be confusing for the untrained user. The logic of turning on vibration is different from the standard one here.
To access the settings, call the keyboard, find the Sogou logo icon (usually in the top row), and go to Settings. You will need to find the Sound & Vibration tab. Unlike Gboard, settings can be broken down into profiles.
Note: Some versions of Sogou for Xiaomi have a separate โVibration in Gamesโ and โVibration in Chatsโ switch. Make sure you check the settings for the mode in which you are experiencing problems.
| Parameter | Gboard | Sogou | SwiftKey |
|---|---|---|---|
| The path to settings | Settings โ Preferences | Logo โ Settings โ Sound | Menu โ Settings โ Sound and vibration |
| Force adjustment | Duration slider | Intensity slider | Separate switch |
| Impact of system settings | High. | Average. | High. |
| Profiles available | No. | Aye (Games/Chat) | No. |
If standard methods don't work, try switching the theme to the design. Some third-party themes for Sogou may have their own skins that override the system's vibration settings or make them invisible.
Removing delays and lags in typing
A situation where vibration is present but it comes late or disappears when printing fast often indicates system performance problems.Lags of the interface on Xiaomi can be caused by overheating of the processor, lack of RAM or background processes that consume resources.
One common reason is memory extension, which uses a portion of internal storage as virtual RAM. While this sounds useful, it can actually slow down the system's response, including tactile signal processing. Try turning it off in the Settings menu โ About Phone โ MIUI version (click a few times) or in the Advanced Settings section.
โ ๏ธ Warning: Before disabling the memory expansion, make sure you are at least free. 3-4 GB of physical RAM. On models with 4 GB or less disabling this feature can lead to the departure of heavy applications.
Also worth checking out the animations. From the Settings menu โ About Phone โ MIUI version (or โOS versionโ), tap 7-10 times on the build number to activate the developer mode. Then go to Settings โ Additional Settings โ For developers. Find the animation scales and reduce their value to 0.5x. This will make the interface more responsive.
โ๏ธ Diagnostics of keyboard lags
Another factor is overheating. If the smartphone body is hot, the system automatically reduces the CPU frequency (trottling), which directly affects the reaction rate of the touchscreen and the vibrator, let the device cool down and check the keyboard again.
Third-party keyboards and their compatibility
If you don't like the standard solutions, you can install a third-party keyboard from Google Play. However, not all applications work correctly with Xiaomi vibrators. Some developers do not take into account the features of MIUI drivers, which leads to a lack of response or its instability.
One of the best alternatives is Microsoft SwiftKey, which is highly optimized and has its own very precise vibration settings. Once installed and activated through Settings โ Language and input, go to its menu and make sure that the option โVibration when pressing keysโ is enabled. Unlike Gboard, SwiftKey often ignores the system slider of duration using its own algorithm.
The Yandex keyboard with its voice input is also popular, but users often complain about the lack of tactile response in some versions of the application. If you use Yandex.Keyboard, check if you have an โEnergy Savingโ mode inside the application itself, if any.
- ๐ SwiftKey: Better predictiveness and stable vibration.
- ๐ท๐บ Yandex: excellent voice input, but possible bugs with vibration.
- ๐จ Facemoji: Many emojis, but often require additional permissions to work the vibration.
When installing a third-party keyboard, be sure to give it all the permissions you request, including access to the clipboard and, in some cases, access to special features. Without this, Android can block the vibrator from a third-party app for security reasons.
๐ก
If the vibration is gone after installing the new keyboard, try to find the Do Not Save Actions option in the Developer Settings and make sure it is turned off, and cleaning the Settings application (not the keyboard, but the Settings system application) also helps.
Frequent problems and ways to solve them
Even with the right settings, there can be specific problems, such as vibrations in the browser, but disappear in messengers like Telegram or WhatsApp, which is often due to the fact that the messengers themselves have their own vibration settings that override the system.
Check the settings inside the app. In Telegram, the path is: Settings โ Chats โ Vibration when dialing. In WhatsApp: Settings โ Chats โ Vibration. If it says No or Disabled, the keyboard won't vibrate, regardless of the phone's settings.
โ ๏ธ Note: on some Redmi models with budget vibrators (ERM) Vibration can physically disappear when the battery is low (less than 15%), the system turns off energy-intensive functions to extend the operation.
Another rare but possible issue is the design conflict: If you installed a third-party theme from MIUI Themes, it may contain its own audio and tactile profiles that are incompatible with the current OS version. Try temporarily switching to a standard Classic or Unlimited theme to see if the problem disappears.
In extreme cases, if nothing works, you can reset your keyboard settings. Go to Settings โ Apps โ All Apps โ Your Keyboard โ Memory and click Clear Everything. This action will delete the saved dictionary and dial history, but return all settings to factory settings, which often solves software errors.
