Xiaomi monitors are a popular solution for work and entertainment, but sometimes users face a problem: audio is not played through the built-in speakers, although the image is displayed correctly. The reasons can vary from incorrect settings in the system to hardware limitations of a particular model. In this article, we will analyze all possible ways to turn on the sound on Xiaomi monitors, including Mi TV, Redmi Display and other series, and consider typical errors that interfere with the correct operation of audio.
Itβs important to understand that not all Xiaomi monitors have built-in speakers. For example, the budget models of the Redmi Display 1A or Mi Desktop Monitor 1C are often sold without an audio system, while premium versions like the Mi TV Master or Xiaomi Mi Surface Display support sound via HDMI ARC or DisplayPort. Before you start setting up, make sure that your model is technically capable of playing sound.
If you have speakers in your monitor but no sound, the problem may lie in the settings of your connected device (PC, laptop, console), cable, or monitor itself, and then weβll go through each scenario in detail, from basic checks to advanced settings.
1. Verification of the technical characteristics of the monitor
Before you try to turn on the sound, make sure your Xiaomi monitor supports audio playback at all.
- π Look at the documentation: Find a box from the monitor or look at the user manual. The specifications section should contain information about the presence of speakers. For example, Mi Desktop Monitor 27" states: "Integrated stereo speakers. 3W Γ 2".
- π Look at the back panel: The presence of connectors HDMI ARC or 3.5 mm Audio Out/In It's indirectly indicative of sound support, but some models (e.g. Redmi Display) 23.8") may have HDMI, but not make sound through it.
- π Check on the official website: Go to your model page on mi.com and find the "Specs" section".
If you don't have speaker in the specs, your monitor doesn't support sound, and you don't need to adjust it any further, so you'll have to use external speakers or headphones.
β οΈ Note: Some Xiaomi monitors (such as Mi Curved Gaming Monitor 34) have built-in speakers, but they can be disabled by default in firmware.
2. Connect the monitor to the sound source
Sound on the Xiaomi monitor can be transmitted through different interfaces: HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C or 3.5 mm connector.
Sound via HDMI
The most common way is to transmit audio over HDMI.
- Connect the monitor to the PC/laptop/set-top box using HDMI-cable (preferably version 1.4 or higher).
- On the sound source (e.g., Windows), select the monitor as the playback device: Right-click on the sound icon in the tray β Open the sound settings. In the Withdrawal section, select your Xiaomi monitor from the list of devices.
NVIDIA/AMD
For MacOS, the path will be: System settings β Sound β Output β Select a monitor.
2.2 Sound via DisplayPort or USB-C
Some Xiaomi monitors (such as the Mi Surface Display 27) support audio transmission via DisplayPort or USB-C.
- π Use the DisplayPort 1.2 cable+ or USB-C Alt Mode (for video and audio transmission).
- ποΈ In PC audio settings, select the monitor as the output device (similar to) HDMI).
- β‘ Make sure the port is USB-C monitor supports audio transmission (this is indicated in the characteristics).
If there is no audio, try another cable β cheap uncertified wires may not support audio transmission.
Sound through the 3.5 mm connector
Some models (e.g. Xiaomi Mi TV 4S) have 3.5 mm Audio Out for external speakers, but this connector is not used to play audio through the built-in speakers. If you only have Audio In on your monitor, this means that there are no speakers and sound can only be played from the outside.
3. Customization of sound in the monitor menu
If the Xiaomi monitor supports sound but it doesnβt play, check the settings of the device itself.
- Press the Menu button on the remote or monitor panel.
- Go to Settings β Sound (or Audio) section.
- Make sure the Speakers setting is on and the volume level is not set to a minimum.
- Check the sound source: If the monitor is HDMI connected, select HDMI ARC or PC Audio (depending on the model).
Some monitors (such as the Mi TV Q1) may have a separate Audio Output setting where you need to select Internal Speakers.
Volume is not at a minimum|The sound source is chosen correctly (HDMI/DP)|The speakers are included in the menu|The sound mode is not turned off (for example, "Mute")-->
If there is no audio section in the menu, it is another sign that your monitor is not equipped with speakers.
4. Update of the monitor firmware
On some Xiaomi monitors (such as the 2020 Mi Desktop Monitor 27), speakers can be turned off by default in the older firmware version. Software updates often solve this problem.
- Download the latest firmware for your model from the official Xiaomi website or the c.mi.com forum.
- Unpack the archive and copy the firmware file (usually with the.bin or.pkg extension) to the flash drive formatted in FAT32.
- Connect the flash drive to USB-port.
- Go to the monitor menu: Settings β Software update and follow the instructions on the screen.
After the update, check if the audio section appears on the menu. If not, there are no speakers in the monitor.
β οΈ Warning: Do not turn off the monitor during firmware updates. This can lead to a "bricking" of the device. If the process is stalled during Checking, wait 10-15 minutes before forced restart.
What to do if the firmware is not installed?
5. Verification of settings on the connected device
If the monitor supports sound but it doesn't play back, the problem may be on the source side (PC, laptop, consoles).
5.1. Sound setting in Windows
To make Xiaomi monitor playback sound in Windows:
- Right-click on the sound icon in the tray β Open the sound parameters.
- In the Withdrawal section, select your monitor from the list. If there is none, click Troubleshooting.
- If the monitor is displayed but no sound, check: Sound card drivers (update via Device Manager). NVIDIA/AMD settings (for graphics cards): in the graphics control panel, select HDMI Audio as the default device.
For Windows 11, the path may be slightly different: Settings β System β Sound β Selecting an output device.
5.2. Sound setting on a Mac
On a MacBook or iMac:
- Open System Settings β Sound β Output.
- Choose your Xiaomi monitor from the list.
- If the monitor doesnβt show up, try another cable or reboot your Mac.
Some Mac models may require additional drivers (e.g., DisplayPort).
5.3. audio setting on Android TV or consoles
If the monitor is connected to Android TV-(e.g., Xiaomi Mi Box) or NVIDIA Shield:
- Go to Settings β Sound and vibration β Output sound.
- Choose HDMI or ARC (if supported).
- Make sure the audio format is compatible with the monitor (e.g. PCM instead of Dolby Digital if the speakers don't support multi-channel sound).
To connect Bluetooth speakers:
- Go to the monitor menu: Settings β Bluetooth.
- Activate device search and connect the column.
- In the audio settings, select Bluetooth Audio as the source.
If the monitor does not support Bluetooth, use a Bluetooth transmitter connected to a 3.5mm connector or USB.
