Owners of Xiaomi smartphones based on MIUI 12 often face the problem of quiet sound during calls. Even at maximum volume, it can be difficult to hear in noisy environments, the reasons can lie in hardware constraints (low-power speaker) and in software settings that the manufacturer deliberately understates for security.
In this article, we will discuss 7 proven ways to increase the volume of the auditory (conversational) speaker, from simple settings on the menu to work with engineering codes and third-party utilities. All methods have been tested on the Redmi Note 10 Pro, Poco X3 Pro and Mi 11 Lite models with MIUI 12.5, but will also be suitable for other devices in the series.
Why Xiaomi speaker is quiet: the main reasons
Before you start setting up, you need to understand the root of the problem, and here are the most common reasons for low volume:
- π Software restriction from Xiaomi β the manufacturer artificially lowers the maximum volume to protect the speaker from overload.
- π± Mesh Pollution Speaker β Dust, hair, or moisture can physically block sound.
- π§ Failure in sound settings after update MIUI or reset to factory parameters.
- ποΈ Incorrect parameters in the engineering menu (for example, understated Volume or Gain values).
- π Savings in battery charge β MIUI can automatically reduce the volume at a low charge level.
If the problem comes on suddenly, first check the physical condition of the speaker: hold the phone to your ear during the call and listen to the distortion. Wheezing, crackling or no sound may indicate a hardware malfunction, in which case it is better to contact the service center.
Method 1: Volume settings via standard MIUI 12 menu
Start with the basic settings, and maybe the problem can be solved without any further manipulation. MIUI 12 has hidden settings that allow you to slightly increase the volume.
- Open the Settings. β Sound and vibration.
- Slip on the item Volume and move the slider "Call" to the maximum.
- Activate the option to increase the volume in the headphones (if it is in your model).
- Go back to Sound and Vibration and select Additional Settings β Sound Quality. Here, turn on MIUI Audio Effects and select Preset Loud or Bass Amplifier.
These settings give you a 10 to 15 percent increase in volume, but don't expect miracles -- the hardware limitations haven't been canceled. If the result is not good, move on to the next method.

When you change your audio settings, restart your phone, and sometimes MIUI only applies the new settings after the reboot.
Method 2: Use the engineering menu (#4636##)
The engineering menu is a hidden partition of Android where you can manually adjust the settings of sound, network and other components. for Xiaomi with MIUI 12, access to it is open through a special code.
Warning: Incorrect changes to the engineering menu can cause your phone to malfunction. Follow the instructions carefully and don't change the settings you don't understand.
- Open the phone app and enter the combination: ##4636##
- In the menu that opens, select Audio (or Sound).
- Scroll down to Volume and find the settings: Sph (Speech) is the volume of the speaker. Sph2 is the additional amplifier (if any). Ring is the volume of the call.

What to do if the engineering menu is not opened?
Important: After changes to the engineering menu, test the volume gradually. A sharp increase in parameters can lead to distortion of the sound or damage to the speaker.
Method 3: Apps for sound amplification (without root)
If the standard methods didn't work, third-party utilities will come to the rescue, and we selected 3 proven applications that run on MIUI 12 without superuser rights:
| Annex | Features | Reference | Ratings. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volume Booster | Increases volume by 20-30%, there is an equalizer | Play Market | 4.3 |
| Sound Amplifier | Enhances sound in headphones and dynamics, suitable for hearing impaired | Play Market | 4.1 |
| Equalizer FX | Allows you to adjust frequencies to improve voice audibility | Play Market | 4.5 |
How to use:
- Install one of the applications (for example, Volume Booster).
- Start it and move the volume slider 70-80% (not the maximum!).
- Enable the Boost Media Volume option or Amplify calls.
- Test the sound during the call.
Don't use sharp objects (needles, knives) - they can damage the speaker membrane. If the sound hasn't improved after cleaning, the problem is likely software.
Turn off the phone.
Use only soft materials
Donβt blow with your mouth β moisture can get inside
Check the sound after cleaning-->
Method 5: Resetting the sound settings to the factory
Sometimes the speaker malfunctions are associated with damaged MIUI configuration files, in which case the reset of the sound settings will help:
- Go to Settings β About the phone β Reset settings.
- Select Network and Sound Reset (not a full reset!).
- Confirm the action and wait for the reboot.
- After turning on the phone, reset the volume in Settings β Sound and vibration.
This method will bring all audio settings back to factory values, which often solves the problem with the quiet speaker, but it will also reset Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and mobile network settings, so they will have to be reconfigured.
β οΈ Warning: If the sound is still quieter after the reset, it's a hardware problem.
Method 6: Update MIUI to the latest version
Xiaomi regularly releases updates that fix sound bugs. If your phone is running an older version of MIUI 12, try updating:
- Open Settings β About the phone β System update.
- Click Check Updates and wait for the search.
- If a new version is available, download and install it.
After updating, check the volume of the speaker. In some cases, the problem is solved automatically. For example, MIUI 12.5.3 was fixed bug with a quiet sound during calls on the Redmi Note 9 Pro.

Updating your firmware is the safest way to fix software errors, but it wonβt help with hardware malfunctions.
Method 7: Radical Methods (for power users)
If none of these things worked, radical measures remain: They require root rights or unlock the bootloader, which voids the warranty and can lead to a phone brik. Use them at your own risk!
- π§ File editing mixer_paths.xml β This file stores volume limits. You can change it with Root Explorer, increasing the parameters. RX1 Digital Volume and RX2 Digital Volume.
- π± Install custom firmware (e.g. Pixel Experience or LineageOS) β some firmware has no volume limit.
- π Use of the ViPER4Android β It's a powerful audio mod that allows you to fine-tune the amplification by frequency. MIUI.
Warning: Incorrect editing of system files can result in sound loss or a download cycle. Before experimenting, backup through TWRP.
