Most Xiaomi users are faced with the problem of insufficient volume when connecting wireless headphones via Bluetooth. Even at the maximum level, the sound can seem quiet or distorted, especially in noisy conditions. The reasons lie in both the limitations of the Bluetooth protocol and the software settings of MIUI. In this article, we will analyze all working methods, from standard settings to hidden functions of the engineering menu.
Itβs important to understand that the problem isnβt always with the headphones themselves. Often, the fault is the Bluetooth codec settings (e.g. AAC, aptX or SBC), MIUI security restrictions, or even the hardware limits of the smartphone. We tested the solutions on the Redmi Note 12 Pro+, Xiaomi 13 Ultra and POCO F5 models β all methods work on current versions of the firmware (2023-2026).
1. Check basic volume settings in MIUI
Before you get into the technical details, make sure the problem isn't solved by standard means. MIUI has separate volume controls for multimedia, calls and alarms - they're easy to confuse.
Open the Quick Settings Panel (swipe down from the top edge of the screen) and check:
- π Volume slider -- it should be at maximum -- sometimes when you put the headphones on, the level drops.
- π§ Bluetooth icon β if it flashes, the connection is unstable and the sound may be interrupted.
- π± Do Not Disturb Mode β It can automatically turn down the volume for some apps.
Also, look at Settings β Sound and Vibration β Volume. You can set the levels separately for:
- π΅ Music and video
- π Calls.
- π Notifications
π‘
If the volume automatically decreases after connecting the headphones, check the settings of the Health application (Settings β Apps β Health) - hearing protection mode can be turned on there.
2.Changing the Bluetooth codec for better sound
Xiaomi uses an SBC codec by default, which is versatile but limits volume and sound quality. If your headphones support AAC, aptX or LDAC, switching to them can solve the problem.
How to change the codec:
- Connect the headphones to your smartphone.
- Open Settings β Connected devices β Bluetooth settings.
- Click on the gear icon next to the name of your headphones.
- Select "Sound Quality" or "Bluetoothooth Codec" (name depends on the version of MIUI).
- Try alternately AAC (optimum for Apple AirPods), aptX (for Sony or Bose headphones), or LDAC (maximum quality, but can lag on weak smartphones).
Important: LDAC codec is the highest volume, but it requires a stable connection. If the headphones start to wheez, go back to the AAC.
| Codec | Max. bitrate. | Loudness | Compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| SBC | 328 kbps | ββ | All devices. |
| AAC | 250 kbps | βββ | AirPods, Beats, most Android |
| aptX | 352 kbps | ββββ | Sony, Bose, Qualcomm chips |
| LDAC | 990 kbps | βββββ | Sony WH-1000XM5, flagships Xiaomi |
3. Reset Bluetooth settings and re-pair
Sometimes the problem lies in the "broken" pairing data, for example, if the headphones previously connected to another device with different codec settings, MIUI can keep the restrictions.
How to reset the connection:
Remove headphones from the list of devices|Reboot your smartphone|Enable the pairing mode on the headphones|Connect again through Settings β Bluetooth-->
After discharge:
- π Reboot both your smartphone and headphones (if they have a reset button, use it).
- π± Connect the headphones in silent mode (turn off the music), then turn up the volume.
- π Check the volume on different apps (YouTube, Spotify, Mi Music).
What if the headphones donβt connect after resetting?
4. Engineering menu: hidden volume settings
Xiaomi has a hidden engineering menu where you can manually increase the volume limits for Bluetooth.Caution: Incorrect changes can lead to distortion of the sound or damage to the speakers!
Instructions:
- Open the Phone app and enter the code ##36446337## (alternative code: ##4636## β go to the Audio tab).
- Select "Hardware Testing" β "Audio" β "Bluetooth" from the menu.
- Find the Max Vol or Volume settings and increase the values by 5-10 units (donβt bet the maximum!).
- Save the settings and restart the smartphone.
β οΈ Warning: Volume increases above factory limits can cause high frequency audio distortion or damage to headphone speakers.
If the engineering menu does not open, try:
- π§ Install the application MTK Engineering Mode (for smartphones on MediaTek).
- π² Use it. ADB-commands (requires a computer and enabled debugging on the USB).
5. Equalizer and sound effects setup
MIUI has an integrated equalizer that can artificially turn up the volume at certain frequencies, which will not increase the physical level of the sound, but will make it "juicier".
How to set up:
- Open Settings β Sound and vibration β Equator.
- Choose a preset called Bass or Rock, which amplifies the low frequencies, which subjectively increases the volume.
- Manually lift sliders to 60 Hz and 250 Hz (but not higher than +6 dB!).
- Turn off the option "Adaptive sound" - it automatically reduces the volume in noisy conditions.
For advanced users:
- ποΈ Install Wavelet app (from F-Droid) β it lets you fine-tune the Bluetooth codec and equalizer.
- π In Wavelet, select the Harman or Bass Boost profile for maximum volume.
π‘
The equalizer does not increase physical volume, but it makes the sound more saturated by amplifying low and medium frequencies, which is especially noticeable in passive noise cancellation headphones.
6. Update of firmware and Bluetooth drivers
Older versions of MIUI (especially the Redmi Note 8/9) had Bluetooth volume-limiting bugs, and developers have patched them in updates, so check the firmware's relevance:
Way: Settings β About the phone β System update.
If there are no updates, the problem remains:
- π Try to revert to an older version. MIUI (via Fastboot or Recovery).
- π₯ Install a custom core (like FrancoKernel) β it often improves Bluetooth performance.
- π§ Reset network settings: Settings β System system β Resetting settings β Resetting network settings.
β οΈ Attention: rolling back firmware or installing custom software resets all data and may result in a loss of warranty. Before the procedure, make a backup through Settings β Additionally. β Backup.
7 Hardware Solutions: Amplifiers and Alternative Methods
If the software methods did not help, the problem may be hardware limitations:
- π Weak Bluetooth transmitter in a smartphone (relevant for budget models Redmi).
- π§ Low resistance speakers in headphones (for example, in Xiaomi AirDots it is only 16 ohms).
- π Interference from other wireless devices (routers, microwaves).
What can be done:
- π Buy a Bluetooth amplifier (for example, FiiO) BTR3 or BT-W5) β It connects to headphones and increases the signal power.
- πΆ Use headphones with active noise cancellation (ANC) β They are better at isolating external sounds, and the volume seems higher.
- π Connect the headphones via Bluetooth 5.0 adapter (if the smartphone has an old version of the module).
For Xiaomi models with a 3.5mm connector (e.g. Redmi Note 11):
- π§ Use wired headphones with impedance 32 ohms β they will always be louder than wireless ones.
- π Connect an external DAC (e.g. Xiaomi) USB-C to 3.5mm) sound-enhancing.
