Before you start setting up, you need to make sure that your audio file meets the technical requirements of the operating system. Xiaomi smartphones work most correctly with MP3, M4A and WAV formats. If you downloaded a melody from the Internet, it can be packaged into an archive or have a custom extension that the phone does not recognize as a sound file.
The critical thing is the location of the file. As mentioned, the file system logic in MIUI requires that the ringtones be in local storage.
