Setting your own tune on a call is one of the first things users want to set up after buying a Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO smartphone. However, not everyone knows how to correctly add a track from the Downloads folder to the list of available ringtones. MIUI system has its own peculiarities: it does not always automatically scan user files, and the standard melody selection interface can hide downloaded tracks.
In this article, we’ll look at three proven ways to make music calls to Xiaomi from downloads: through built-in settings, file manager, and third-party apps. You’ll also learn why your track may not appear in the ringtones list and how to fix it. All instructions are relevant for MIUI 12–14 and Android 11–14 devices, including the Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Xiaomi 13, and others.
If you’ve tried adding a tune but it doesn’t appear in the call settings, the problem is probably the file format or where it is located. We’ll tell you which formats Xiaomi supports, where to move the tracks and how to get around the system’s limitations.
Why is the music from Downloads not displayed in the call settings?
Many users face a situation where the downloaded track is simply not visible in the list of available ringtones.
1. Inappropriate file format. Xiaomi only supports certain audio formats for ringtones:.mp3,.m4a,.ogg and.wav. If your file is.flac,.aac or another, the system will ignore it.
2. The file is in the wrong folder. MIUI Only scans system directories for ringtones: /system/media/audio/ringtones and /storage/emulated/0/media/audio/ringtones. Download folder» (/Download) not included in this list.
3. Too large or too long. The optimal ringtone duration is up to 30 seconds. Files larger than 5 MB may not be displayed or cause delays in playback.
4. Errors in file metadata: If the track does not have ID3 tags (performer, name information), the system may not recognize it.
5. MIUI Limitations: In some firmware versions, Xiaomi artificially blocks the addition of custom ringtones without the use of file managers.
⚠️ Note: If you download music from the Internet, make sure the file is not copyrighted. Some tracks (such as those from Apple Music or Spotify) may have a copy of the file. DRM-protection and not play as ringtones.
Method 1: Set the melody through Xiaomi settings (the easiest one)
If your file meets the requirements (.mp3 format, up to 30 seconds in length), try adding it to your standard settings:
- Open the Settings app (the gear icon on the desktop).
- Go to the section “Sounds and vibrations” → “Call melody”.
- In the upper right corner, click "Add" (the "+" or "My Melodies" icon).
- Choose Local Music or File Manager.
- Find the Download folder and select the track you want.
- Confirm the choice - the melody will appear in the list of available ringtones.
If there is no Add option, then your version of MIUI does not support direct import from Downloads, in which case use Method 2 or Method 3.
⚠️ Note: On some models (e.g. Redmi 10s) MIUI 12.5) After selecting the file, you may experience an error, "It is impossible to set a melody", which means that the file does not meet the requirements of the system.mp3 bitrate 128-192 kbit/s.
Method 2: Transfer a file to the Ringtones folder via a file manager
If the standard method didn't work, the most reliable way is to manually move the track to the ringtone system folder.
- Open Files (Xiaomi’s standard file manager) or install Solid Explorer/FX File Manager.
- Go to the Download folder (/storage/emulated/0/Download).
- Find the desired audio file and hold your finger on it to make the menu appear.
- Select "Copy" or "Slice".
- Go to the Ringtones folder: /storage/emulated/0/media/audio/ringtones If it is not available, create it manually (the name should match exactly!).
- Insert the file into the folder and restart the smartphone.
After the reboot, your track will appear in the list of standard tunes, and if the media/audio/ringtones folder is not available, you can create it yourself:
- 📁 Open the root folder of internal memory (/storage/emulated/0/).
- 📁 Create a media folder → inside → ringtones.
- 🔄 Reset the device.
Important: If the melody doesn't show up after you reboot, check that the file has a.mp3 extension (sometimes it can be hidden after you download it). Rename it manually if necessary.
File format.mp3,.m4a or.ogg|
Duration not exceeding 30 seconds |
File size up to 5 MB|
The file is renamed without special characters (for example, "ringtone.mp3")|
The folder "ringtones" exists on the path /storage/emulated/0/media/audio/

Method 3: Using third-party apps (if nothing helps)
If the first two methods didn’t work, use specialized applications for installing ringtones.
- 🎵 Ringtone Maker – allows you to crop tracks and set them as ringtones, alarm clocks or notifications.
- 🔊 Zedge – a huge database of free tunes with the ability to download directly to the system.
- 📱 Files by Google – file manager with ringtones assignment function.
Instructions for Ringtone Maker:
- Install the app from Google Play.
- Open it and select “From Files” → find the track in “Downloads”.
- Cut the fragment (optional) and click "Save".
- Select "Set as a ringtone."
The advantage of this method is to bypass the limitations of MIUI. The application itself places the file in the desired system folder and updates the database of media files.
⚠️ Note: Some applications (e.g. Zedge) require permission to access storage and change system settings. Do not grant permission to applications with suspicious reviews - this may lead to data leakage.
💡
If it is reset to standard after installing the ringtone through a third-party app, check the battery optimization settings. Add the app to exceptions ("Settings" → "Applications" → "Permissions" → "Autostart" and "Battery Optimization").
How to Cut Rington Music Directly on Xiaomi
If your track is too long, you can cut it without a computer.
Method 1: Through the Music app (MIUI Music)
1. Open the standard Music app.
2. Find the track in "Downloads" and click on it.
3. In the playback menu, select "Cut" (scissors icon).
4. Set the beginning and end of the fragment (optimally - 20-30 seconds).
5. Save the cropped file and use it as a ringtone (via Method 1 or Method 2).
Method 2: Through Ringtone Maker
1. Open the app and select the track.
2. Move the sliders to trim the beginning and end.
3. Click Save → Set as a ringtone.
The trimming is not only used to shorten the duration, but also to remove the silence at the beginning of the track. Many tunes have a pause of 1-2 seconds, which can cause a call to start with a delay.
Why is the ringtone being played with a delay?
Table: Supported Ringtone Formats on Xiaomi
Not all audio formats are suitable for installation on a call, and the table below shows compatible and incompatible file types:
| Format | Is it supported? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| .mp3 | ✅ Yes. | Optimal choice: Supports bitrate to 320 kbps, but 128-192 kbps is recommended. |
| .m4a (AAC) | ✅ Yes. | Good quality with a small size, suitable for ringtones. |
| .ogg | ✅ Yes. | Less commonly used, but maintained, may not be replicated on older models. |
| .wav | ⚠️ Partially. | It's supported, but files are usually large. It can cause delays. |
| .flac | ❌ No. | It doesn't recognize as a ringtone. You need to convert to.mp3. |
| .aac | ⚠️ Partially. | It might not show up on the list. It's better to convert. |
If your file is in an incompatible format, use Online-Convert, Audacity, or mobile converters (such as MediaConverter) to convert to.mp3.
💡
To guarantee the work of the ringtone on Xiaomi, use a file in.mp3 format with a bitrate of 128-192 kbit / s, up to 30 seconds long and up to 5 MB in size.
Problem Solving: The ringtone is not installed or played
If after all the manipulations the melody is not put or played, check the following points:
Problem 1: The file is not listed
- 🔍 Make sure the file is in the folder. /media/audio/ringtones.
- 🔄 Restart the device – sometimes MIUI Does not update the media base immediately.
- 📲 Check that the file is not hidden (in the file manager, enable the display of hidden files).
Problem 2: Ringtones are played with distortions
- 🎛️ Reduce the bitrate of a file to 128-192 kbps (via Audacity or online converter).
- 🔊 Check that the sound settings do not activate the Low Frequency Amplification mode (“Settings» → «Sounds and vibrations» → «Sound effects»).
Problem 3: After rebooting, the ringtone is reset
- 🔋 Turn off battery optimization for the Phone app ("Settings» → «Annexes» → «Battery management»).
- 📁 Check that the file has not been deleted from the ringtones folder (sometimes garbage cleaners delete “unnecessary” files).
If the problem persists, try setting the ringtone through another app (such as Zedge) or reset the sound settings to standard ("Settings" → "System" → "Resettings" → "Resetting Sound settings").
