How to set a customized melody to contact in Xiaomi: 3 working ways

Why Xiaomi can’t assign a tune to a contact?

Are you tired of confusing calls from different people because everyone has the same signal? Xiaomi smartphones (including Redmi and POCO) have a built-in function for assigning unique ringtones to individual contacts — but it is hidden deeper than in other Android devices. The problem is that the manufacturer regularly changes the location of settings in new versions of the MIUI shell, and in some firmware, the option can be turned off by default.

In this article, you will find current ways for MIUI 12, 13 and 14 (including global and Chinese versions), as well as solutions for cases where the standard method does not work.

  • 📱 Why the function may be missing and how to return it
  • ⚙️ Alternative methods through third-party applications

Before you go to the instructions, check the version of your shell: go to Settings → About Phone → MIUI version. It depends on which of the methods will work for you.

Method 1: Standard Melody Assignment Through Contact (MIUI 14 and later)

In the latest versions of the shell, the algorithm has become simpler, but the path to settings has become less obvious. Here are the step-by-step instructions for Xiaomi 12/13/14, Redmi Note 11/12 and other models from 2022-2026:

  1. Open the Contacts app (a icon with a person’s silhouette).
  2. Find the right contact in the list and tap it.
  3. In the upper right corner, press three dots (⋮) and select "Edit».
  4. Scroll down to the Rington block (may be called the Call Sound).
  5. Slip on the current melody - a list of standard signals will open.
  6. Choose your favorite option or click Add (+) to download your file.

If the Rington item is not in the contact editor, then your firmware uses the old logic - go to Method 2.

Check that the contact is saved in the phone book, not in the phone book. SIM-map

Make sure the melody file is in the phone’s memory (not on the phone’s memory). SD-map)

The audio file format should be MP3, M4A or WAV (max. 5 MB)

Turn off the "Do Not Disturb" or "No Sound" modes in the sound settings

MIUI 14 has the ability to assign not only ringtones, but also unique vibrations to contacts, to activate it:

  1. In the contact editor, find the item “Vibration” (below the ringtone block).
  2. Choose one of the preset patterns or create your own by clicking “Set up”.

⚠️ Note: On some models (POCO F4, Xiaomi 11T) post-update MIUI 14.0.5+ The function of individual tunes may temporarily disappear, in which case resetting the settings of the Contacts app will help (see the problem solving section).

Method 2: Through audio settings (MIUI 12/13 and older versions)

In firmware before MIUI 14, the assignment of tunes worked differently, through global sound settings, a method that is relevant for owners of Redmi Note 10/9, Xiaomi Mi 11/10 and other devices on MIUI 12–13:

  1. Open the Settings. → Sound and vibration.
  2. Scroll to the Ringtones block and select the Call Rington.
  3. In the upper right corner, press three dots (⋮) and tap "Appoint contacts».
  4. From the contact list, select the right person.
  5. Assign a melody from the suggested ones or add your own through the + button.

If your MIUI version does not have an “Appoint Contacts” option, try an alternative path:

Settings → Applications → Application Management → Contacts → Permissions → Enable “Storage”
MIUI versionThe path to settingsFeatures
MIUI 14 (2023–2026)Contacts → Edit → RingtoneSupport for user vibrations
MIUI 12–13Settings → Sound → Assign contactsMay require permission to store
MIUI 11 and olderContacts → Menu → Install ringtoneLimitation on the length of the melody (30 seconds)

💡

If you want to use a song passage as a ringtone, cut it to 30 seconds in any audio editor (like the MP3 Cutter from Play Market).

Method 3: Use of third-party applications (if the standard method does not work)

If your firmware has a customized tunes feature that is disabled or not working properly, third-party utilities will come to the rescue. We tested 5 popular apps and selected the two most reliable ones:

1. Zedge (free, with ads)

  • 🎶 More than 100,000 free ringtones and notifications
  • 🔄 Ability to cut melodies before installation
  • 📱 Automatic appointment to contacts from the list

How to use:

  1. Install Zedge from the Play Market.
  2. In the “Ringtones” section, find your favorite tune.
  3. Click “Install” → “Contact” and select the person from the list.

2. Ringtone Maker (to create custom tunes)

  • ✂️ Audio file editor with visual scale
  • 🎧 I listened before I saved it.
  • 📁 Save to Ringtones folder for automatic recognition by the system

⚠️ Warning: When using third-party apps, turn off battery optimization for them, otherwise assigned tunes may be reset. → Battery → Optimizing the battery → Select the application → No restrictions.

How to return a standard function if it is lost after the update?
If the destination of the tunes has disappeared after the MIUI update, try: 1. Clear the Contacts app cache (Settings → Apps → Contacts → Storage → Clear Cache). 2. Reset the Phone application settings (Settings → Applications → Phone → Additional → Settings Reset). 3. Install a regional firmware (e.g., MIUI EU) where the function is always active.

How to Add Your Music to Xiaomi’s Rington List

The standard list of tunes in Xiaomi is limited to 20-30 options.

  1. Place the audio file (.mp3,.m4a or.wav format) in one of the system folders: /storage/emulated/0/Ringtones/ - for ringtones /storage/emulated/0/Notifications/ - for notifications /storage/emulated/0/Alarms/ - for alarm clocks

Reboot your phone (required!).

Open the ringtone settings (in any of the ways above) and your file will appear in the list.

Ringtones, Notifications and Alarms folders should be at the root of internal memory, not at the root of the internal memory. SD-If you don't have folders, you can create them manually through any file manager.

For convenience, use these audio file settings:

  • 🎵 Format: MP3 (recommended) or M4A (quality)
  • 🕒 Duration: up to 30 seconds (the system can cut long files)
  • 📏 Size: No more than 5 MB (otherwise the file will not appear)
  • 🔊 Bitrate: 128-192 kbps (optimal ratio of quality to size)

💡

Files in the Ringtones folder are automatically made available in all apps, including WhatsApp and Telegram, for notification assignments.

Problem Solving: Why Melody Assignment Doesn't Work

If you’re outfollowing all the instructions but the melody doesn’t set or reset, check out these points:

1. Problems with the storage permit

In MIUI, the Contacts app may not have access to files to fix:

Settings → Applications → Application Management → Contacts → Permissions → Enable “Storage”

2. Contact saved on SIM-map

Individual tunes only work for contacts saved in a Google account or phone memory.

  1. Open contact. → «Edit».
  2. Click on your current account (e.g., “SIM 1”).
  3. Select “Phone” or “Google”.
  4. Save the changes.

3. Resetting the settings of the “Contacts” application

Additional chips: vibrations, notifications and contact groups

On Xiaomi, you can configure not only ringtones, but also other parameters for contacts:

1. Individual vibrations

MIUI 14:

  1. Open contact. → «Edit».
  2. Find the Vibration block.
  3. Choose a pattern or create your own (click “Set up” and tap on the screen).

2. Unique notifications for SMS

To assign a separate signal to messages from the contact:

  1. Open the "Messages" (SMS).
  2. Find a chat with a contact. → three-point (⋮) → «Details».
  3. Select “Notification Sound” and assign a tune.

3. Group melodies

You can assign one tune to the entire group (e.g., “Family” or “Work”):

  1. Open the "Contact» → «Groups».
  2. Create a group or select an existing one.
  3. Press three points (⋮) → «Group settings» → «rington».

💡

For important contacts (such as bosses or loved ones), set up a repeating signal: in ringtone settings, select the option “Repeat” at intervals of 2-3 seconds.

FAQ: Frequent questions about tune-ups on Xiaomi

Can I assign different tunes for the first and second call?
Yes, but only through third-party applications like Custom Ringtones. This feature is not available in standard MIUI settings. The app lets you say: Melody for the first call Separate signal after 15/30 seconds without response Vibration with increasing intensity Download here.
Why does my tune get cut off when it's assigned?
MIUI automatically shortens ringtones longer than 30 seconds. To avoid this: Cut the file in advance in an audio editor (like Lexis Audio Editor). Save it in M4A format, it is less compressed by the system. Place the file in the /Ringtones/ folder and restart the phone. If the problem persists, try converting the file to OGG with a bitrate of 96 kbps.
How to assign a melody to contacts on WhatsApp/Telegram?
In messengers, individual signals are configured separately: WhatsApp: Open a chat with a contact → three-point (⋮) → «View the contact. Press the three dots at the top. → «Set up notifications. Turn on "Customer Sound" and select the melody. Telegram: Go to the chat → contact → «Activate “Allow Notifications” and select the sound. Please note: Telegram uses a tune for all notifications from the contact (messages, calls) and not just for calls.
Will the individual tune work if the phone is in Do Not Disturb mode?
No, in Do Not Disturb (DND) mode, all call sounds are turned off, including individual ones. However, you can configure exceptions: Go to Settings → Sound and Vibration → Do Not Disturb. Select "Allow Exceptions." Activate "Calls" and add the desired contacts to the "White List," in which case calls from selected people will be accompanied by the assigned melody even in DND mode.
