The alarm clock in Xiaomi Redmi 9A offers a limited set of standard tunes that get boring quickly. Many users want to wake up to their favorite music but donโt know how to add their own composition to the signal list. In this article, weโll look at all the working methods, from built-in MIUI features to bypassing restrictions through third-party apps.
Important: customization options depend on the firmware version. In the latest updates MIUI 12.5+ for Redmi 9A Xiaomi removed the direct option to add custom tunes, but the workarounds remained. We tested all methods on current versions of the software (2026) and selected only working solutions.
Preparation: what files are suitable for the alarm clock
Before installing a melody, make sure your audio file meets the system requirements:
- ๐ต Format: MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A (AAC). FLAC and WMA unsupported.
- ๐ Duration: optimal 30-60 The files are longer. 2 minutes may be cut off.
- ๐ฑ Placement: The file must be in the phoneโs memory (not on the phoneโs memory) SD-Best of all, in the Ringtones or Notifications folder.
- ๐ Loudness: Make sure the track is loud enough (at least) -12 dB peaks. Quiet compositions may not wake up.
If your file doesn't meet the requirements, use free converters like Audio-Converter or the MP3 Cutter app from Google Play for cropping. Audacity (available on PC) is the best way to check the volume.
Method 1: Using the standard Watch app (powered by MIUI 11-12)
This is the easiest method, but it's not available on all firmware versions. Check first if you have this option:
- Open the โClockโ app** (icon with dial).
- Go to the Alarming Sign (bell icon at the bottom).
- Click on + or select an existing alarm clock โ Melody.
- In the upper right corner, tap on the three-point menu (โฎ) โ Add a tune.
- Select a file from your phoneโs memory (Music, Ringtones, or Downloads folders).
If you don't have Add a Melody, your version of MIUI doesn't support it. Go to the following ways.
Download track in supported format (MP3/WAV)
Cut the duration to 1 minute
Place the file in the Ringtones folder
Check the volume of the playback-->
Method 2: Use the Ringtones folder (universal method)
Android automatically scans certain folders for alarm melodies and alerts, and we can take advantage of this.
- Connect your phone to your PC through USB-cable (file transfer mode) or use the file manager on your smartphone (e.g., Explorerยป**).
- Create a folder at the root of your phone's memory that's exactly called Ringtones (registrar is important! If you already have a folder, use it).
- Put the audio file in it, and the file name should be in Latin (e.g. morning.mp3).
- Restart the phone (required!) After the reboot, the file will appear in the alarm clock melodies list.
If the melody doesn't show up:
- ๐ Check that the file is not hidden (there is no point at the beginning of the name, for example.morning.mp3).
- ๐ Make sure the folder is created at the root of the memory, not inside another folder (e.g., the folder, Download/Ringtones It won't work).
- ๐ Try a different format (for example, convert). MP3 into M4A).
Why isn't my tune on the list?
Method 3: Third-party applications for alarm clock
If standard methods donโt work, set an alternative alarm from Google Play.
| Annex | Features | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep as Android | Smart alarm clock with sleep analysis, playlist support, volume control over time | Download |
| Alarmy | A hard awakening (must be scanned) QR-code or solve a problem, support for Spotify | Download |
| Timely | Minimalist design, cloud synchronization, smooth volume increase | Download |
Instructions for Sleep as Android (the most functional option):
- Install and open the application.
- Press + to create an alarm clock.
- In the section "Alarm clock sound" select Music โ Add track.
- Select a file from your phoneโs memory or connect Spotify/YouTube Music.
- Set up additional options: vibration, repetition, tasks to turn off.
๐ก
Sleep as Android allows you to set up a smart wake-up call in REM sleep (30 minutes before the set time) to wake up easier.
Problem Solving: The alarm clock doesn't play my tune
If youโve set everything up but the alarm still uses a standard sound, check out these points:
โ ๏ธ Attention: On Redmi 9A s MIUI 12.5+ There is a bug where user tunes are reset after a system update. To avoid this, back up your Ringtones folder on your PC before upgrading.
- ๐ Do Not Disturb mode** can block playback. Check exceptions: Settings โ Sound. โ Don't disturb. โ Alarm clocks.
If the problem persists, try setting the tune through the Google Watch app (available on Google Play), which often works more consistently than the standard alarm clock on Xiaomi.
How to Make a Smooth Awakening Through Music
The sound of an alarm clock can be stressful.
- On the standard alarm clock. MIUI: Open the alarm. โ Melody. โ Choose your composition. Click on the gear icon (โ๏ธ) Enable the option of Smooth Volume Up (if any).
For best effect, choose tracks with a gradual increase in tempo.
- ๐ป Classical music (such as Grieg's "Morning).
- ๐ Ambient or sounds of nature (birds singing, sea noise).
- ๐น Instrumental compositions without sharp transitions.
๐ก
Smooth awakening reduces cortisol (the stress hormone) by 30% compared to a sharp signal, as shown by a study from Harvard Medical School (2021).
Alternatives: Spotify alarm clock or YouTube Music
If you use streaming services, you can adjust the awakening to your favorite tracks without downloading:
- Install Spotify or YouTube Music.
- In the alarm app (such as Alarmy), select Music from Spotify.
- Log in to your account and select a playlist or album.
- Make sure your phone is connected to the internet (Wi-Fi or mobile data).
โ ๏ธ Warning: When you use streaming services, the alarm won't work in airplane mode or when you don't have internet. Always keep a backup local tune on your phone!
Advantages of this method:
- ๐ถ Access to millions of tracks without taking up your phoneโs memory.
- ๐ Automatic update of playlists (e.g., โTopโ-50ยป weekly).
- ๐ง The ability to wake up to podcasts or audiobooks.
Disadvantages:
- ๐ถ Internet addiction (if Wi-Fi is turned off at night, the alarm clock will not work).
- ๐ Increased battery consumption due to background work of the streaming application.
