Why the Redmi Note 8 notifications are too loud and how to fix it
Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 is known for its balanced sound, but sometimes the volume of notifications can be annoying - especially at night or in quiet rooms. The problem often arises after the MIUI update, when the system settings are reset to factory settings. Unlike calls, notifications are adjusted separately, and many users do not know where to look for the right sliders.
In this article, weβll look at all the ways to reduce the volume of notifications, from standard MIUI settings to hidden features and third-party apps. Itβs important to understand that Redmi Note 8 (the ginkgo model) has unique options that are not available on other Xiaomi smartphones, such as separate settings for different types of notifications (SMS, messengers, system alerts).
If you've tried turning down the volume with the sidebar buttons, but the notifications are still too loud, don't rush to reset the settings. You're probably dealing with some of the audio profile settings or the application conflict, and then you'll find step-by-step instructions for each case.
Method 1: Quickly adjust volume buttons
The most obvious, but often ignored, method is to use physical buttons on the body of a smartphone. On the Redmi Note 8, they work according to a special algorithm:
- π Press the volume button (top) and a panel will appear with three sliders: Call, Media and Notifications.
- π± Swipe left/right on the Notification slider (usually middle or bottom).
- π If the slider is missing, touch the gear icon next to the sliders - this will open the advanced settings.
An important caveat: on some versions of MIUI, the notification slider may be hidden if Do Not Disturb or Meet the Meet the Meet the profile is activated, in which case, first turn off these modes in the notification curtain.

If the volume buttons don't respond, check if the Lock (left side) key is clamped. On the Redmi Note 8, this can block the volume change.
Method 2: Configure through the Sound and Vibration menu
To fine-tune notifications, go to the system menu, which allows you to divide the volume for different types of alerts (for example, make SMS quieter and notifications from Telegram louder).
- Open the Settings. β Sounds and vibrations.
- Select Volume (or Volume Levels in older versions of MIUI).
- Move the Notification slider to the right level, and you can turn off the vibration if it's in the way.
- To set up separately, click on Additional Settings and select apps (such as WhatsApp or Gmail).
Note that MIUI 12 and later has an option called Adaptive Sound, which automatically raises the volume in noisy areas, and if it's on, the notifications can get louder without you. Turn it off in the same menu.

Method 3: Use of sound profiles (modes)
The Redmi Note 8 supports multiple audio profiles that automatically change the volume of notifications, which is useful if you want your smartphone to lower its sound at certain times (such as at night).
| Profile | Volume of notifications | How to turn it on |
|---|---|---|
| Normal. | 100% (factory setting) | Notifications curtain β speaker icon |
| Quiet | 50% maximum | The curtain β long press on the speaker icon |
| Don't disturb. | 0% (total shutdown) | Settings β Do not disturb |
| Meeting | 30% + vibration | Curtain β calendar icon |
To set up automatic profile switching:
- Go to Settings β Do not disturb β Schedule.
- Add a rule (for example, from 23:00 to 7:00).
- Select Quiet Mode or Disable Notifications.
Method 4: Turning off sound for individual applications
If you are annoyed by notifications only from specific applications (such as games or social networks), they can be muted or disabled completely without affecting the system alerts.
- π΅ Go to Settings. β Annexes β Application management.
- π± Select the app you want (such as Facebook or TikTok).
- π Press Notifications and turn off the Sound switch or turn down the volume manually.
- π To completely disable notifications, activate the Block All mode.
Attention! Some apps (like Viber or Telegram) have their own audio settings inside the chat menu.
- Open the app and go to any chat.
- Click on the name of the interlocutor β Notifications.
- Select Quiet Mode or turn off the sound completely.
Open system sound settings | Check notification slider | Set up profiles (Quiet/Meeting) | Turn off sound for unnecessary applications | Update MIUI to the latest version-->
Method 5: Third-party applications for fine-tuning
If standard MIUI tools don't work, you can use third-party tools that allow you to:
- π Adjust the volume of notifications in 1% increments (instead of 10% increments) MIUI).
- π Set a schedule for automatic sound reduction.
- π Create separate profiles for different locations (house, work, street).
The best apps for Redmi Note 8:
| Annex | Functions | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Volume Styles | Customization of volume sliders, dark theme | Google Play |
| MacroDroid | Automatic volume reduction in time/place | Google Play |
| SoundAssistant | Separate setting for left/right speaker | Google Play |
Important: on Xiaomi with MIUI 12+, some applications require permissions via ADB (USB debugging), without which they will not be able to change the system volume.
adb shell pm grant com.kgbg.assistant android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGSReplace com.kgbg.assistant with the package of the desired application.

Third-party apps give more control over sound, but may conflict with MIUI. Always check reviews before installing.
