Why is it that Xiaomi Redmi calls are too loud?
Have you noticed that your Xiaomi Redmi is working like a megaphone during phone calls? The interlocutor complains about a loud sound in the handset, and you hear echoes or distortions? The problem is typical for most models of the lineup - from the budget Redmi 9A to the flagship Redmi K60 Pro. The reason for this can be both hardware features (sensitive microphone, powerful speaker) and the software settings of MIUI.
In 80% of cases, adjusting the audio settings solves the problem, but sometimes you need a deeper setup. In this article, we will discuss 7 working ways to reduce the volume of the conversation, from basic to advanced, including hidden engineering menus. All methods are tested on MIUI 12-14 and are relevant for Android 11-14.
Before you start settings, make sure that the problem is not network interference or damaged speaker. Try calling from another phone to the same number - if the volume remains normal, then it is the settings of your Redmi.
1. Volume adjustment during the call
The most obvious but often ignored way is to manually adjust the volume directly during a conversation. On Xiaomi Redmi, this is not intuitive, so many users are simply unaware of this feature.
When you call, press the volume/volume button on the side of your smartphone. A slider will appear on the screen that says "Call Volume." Importantly, this regulator is responsible only for the volume in the speaker, not the microphone! To change the sensitivity of the microphone, read the next section.
- π Volume increase β Up button (may increase echoes).
- π Volume reduction β Down button (recommended for starting a conversation).
- π Loud Communication β Click on the speaker icon in the call interface to switch between the handset and the external speaker.
β οΈ Warning: If the sound is completely gone after the volume is reduced, check if Vibration or No Sound mode is activated in the quick settings. MIUI It's because of a firmware bug.

2. adjust the sensitivity of the microphone in the engineering menu
If someone hears you too loudly or with distortion, the problem lies in the microphone settings. In Xiaomi Redmi, you can change them through the hidden engineering menu (Engineer Mode), which works on all models, but you need to be careful - the wrong settings can worsen the quality of communication.
To get into the engineering menu:
- Open the Phone app.
- Enter the combination: ##4636##
- Select the item Information about the phone (on some firmware - Engineer Mode).
- Go to the Hardware Testing β Audio β Mic Test tab.
Here you'll see the microphone settings. To reduce the volume:
- π€ Set Mic Volume in the 0-5 range (usually 6 by default).
- π§ Reduce the Mic Gain to 10-15 dB (standard value - 20 dB).
- π In the Normal Mode section, check to check the box opposite Voice Call.
| Parameter | Default value | Recommended value | The effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mic Volume | 6 | 3β4 | Reduces the overall volume of the microphone |
| Mic Gain | 20 dB | 10-15 dB | Reduces sensitivity to loud sounds |
| Noise Suppression | Off | On | Suppresses background noise (useful in crowded places) |
β οΈ Warning: After changes to the engineering menu, be sure to restart the smartphone, otherwise the settings may not apply. If after adjustment, the interlocutor began to hear you too quietly, return the settings to the default values.

3. Use of the "Silent Call" mode in MIUI
MIUI has a hidden Quiet Call feature that automatically lowers the volume of the speaker during a conversation, an option that is useful if you talk frequently in noisy places or through a speakerphone.
To activate the mode:
- Open the Settings. β Sound and vibration.
- Scroll down and select Additional Sound Settings.
- Find the Quiet Call (on some firmware - Smart Volume Reduction) and turn it on.
- Set sensitivity: Choose Low or Medium for moderate volume reduction.
The feature works based on ambient noise analysis: if the smartphone detects that you are in a quiet room, the volume will automatically decrease. In the settings, you can also enable Adaptive Decline, which will adjust the sound in real time.
Note: On some models (Redmi Note 11 and older), this option may be called Intelligent Volume and may be located in the Special Features section.
π‘
If your firmware doesn't have Quiet Call, try turning on Single Speaker Mode in the audio settings, which will reduce output power, but may impair sound quality.
4. Disable sound enhancements and echo suppression
MIUI's default algorithms for improving voice and suppressing echoes, paradoxically, sometimes they're too aggressive, leading to artificial volume amplification or metallic sound, and turning these functions off often solves the problem.
How to do this:
- Go to Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Find the Phone app and open its settings.
- Select Permissions β Microphone β Additional settings.
- Turn off the options: π Improving voice π΅ Echo suppression π Adaptive volume
After you turn off, restart your phone and check the quality of your communication. If the sound is too quiet, turn back on Echo suppression, which is the least loud, but removes unpleasant sound artifacts.
On some firmware, these settings may be located elsewhere: Settings β Special features β Hearing β Sound settings.
π‘
Disabling audio enhancements is especially important for models with MediaTek processors (e.g. Redmi 10C or Redmi A2), where sound processing algorithms often work incorrectly.
5. Resetting the sound settings to factory
If all previous methods failed, there may have been a build-up of audio configuration errors in the system, in which case a media reset would help, and it would return all sound parameters to factory values without affecting personal data.
Instructions:
- Open the Settings. β The phone.
- Click on Restore and Reset (or Reset on new versions of MIUI).
- Select Reset sound settings (on some models β Reset multimedia settings).
- Confirm the action and wait for the reboot.
After reset, check the volume during the call. If the problem persists, this may indicate a hardware malfunction (damaged microphone or speaker), in which case we recommend contacting the Xiaomi service center.
β οΈ Warning: Don't confuse Resetting Sound with Reset to factory settings! The second option will delete all your data (photos, contacts, apps), whereas the first one only affects sound and vibration parameters.
6.Verification for viruses and conflicting applications
Sometimes the volume is caused by third-party applications that access the microphone and change its settings.
- π§ Call recording applications (such as Cube) ACR or Call Recorder).
- π€ Programs for streaming or podcasts (Anchor, Streamlabs).
- π‘οΈ Antiviruses with microphone protection (e.g. Avast or 360 Security).
- π€ Rights annexes ADMIN or SYSTEM_ALERT.
To check the impact of third-party programs:
- Launch your phone in Safe Mode (press the power button β Safe Mode).
- Call someone and check the volume.
- If the problem has disappeared, then one of the installed applications is to blame.
- Remove suspicious programs, starting with those that requested access to the microphone.
We also recommend checking your phone for viruses with Google Play Protect or Malwarebytes. Some malware specifically increases the volume of the microphone to listen to.
How to remove system applications that interfere with sound?
7 Hardware solutions: microphone protection and dynamics
If the software didn't work, the problem could be physical damage to the components.
- π οΈ Cleaning the microphone: Dust and dirt in the microphone hole (usually located near the main camera or on the lower end) can distort the sound.
- π§ Replacement of the speaker grid. Redmi often leaves the top speaker protective grid, which leads to amplified sound, which can be glued or replaced in the service.
- π± If the phone fell, the microphone plume or the speaker could have gone, and then only disassembly and soldering would help.
- π If the problem is just the dynamics, wired or Bluetooth headphones will be the temporary solution.
The Redmi Note 10 Pro and later have a backup microphone problem (located next to the USB-C connector) and if it is damaged, the system automatically increases the volume of the main microphone to compensate, requiring a replacement microphone module.
The cost of repair in official Xiaomi services:
| Service | Cost (β½) | Repair time |
|---|---|---|
| Replacement of microphone | 1 200β2 500 | 1-2 days |
| Cleaning/repairing dynamics | 800β1 500 | 1 day |
| Diagnostics of sound | 500 (repair credit) | 30 minutes. |
