Why Xiaomi smartphones make sound when turned on and can it be removed?
Xiaomiβs booting sound signal is a brand name that should emphasize the branding of the device. However, for many users, this loud sound becomes annoying, especially if the phone is rebooted at night or in a public place. Unlike alarm clock tunes or notifications, the system boot sound is not turned off through standard audio settings β it needs to be deactivated separately.
The difficulty is that MIUI (Xiaomi firmware) doesn't provide a direct option to turn off this sound from the settings menu, and it's intentional: the manufacturer wants to keep the branded "handwriting" even when the device is turned on. But there are workarounds, from simple tricks with firmware files to deep changes in system settings. It's important to understand that some methods require unlocking the bootloader or root rights, which can affect warranty and security.
In this article, weβll look at all the current ways, from the safest to the most radical, and explain why some methods stopped working after the MIUI 13/14 updates. If youβre using the Redmi Note 10 Pro, POCO X3 Pro or Xiaomi 12T, hereβs the solution for your model.
Method 1: Turn off the boot sound through system settings (without root)
This is the simplest method that works on most Xiaomi devices with MIUI 12-14.It does not require superuser rights, but may not be available on some regional firmware (for example, for Russia or India).
- Open the Settings app (cog icon).
- Go to the section Sound and vibration.
- Scroll down and look for System Sounds (or MIUI Sounds on some versions).
- Turn off the slider next to the Loading Sound or the Turn On Sound.
If you don't have one, your firmware doesn't support this option, in which case, try an alternative path:
- π Go to Settings. β The phone. β Version. MIUI and tap 7 times on the build number to activate Developer Mode.
- π§ Return to the main settings menu, open additional settings β Developer mode.
- π Scroll down and find Turn off the download sound (if the item is missing, the method is not suitable).
Important! On some models (e.g. Xiaomi Mi 11 or Redmi K40), this option may be hidden under another name: MI Sound or System Melody. If you don't find it, move on to the next one.
Method 2: Delete the audio file through the file manager (without root)
The system audio download is stored as a separate file in the firmware. If it is renamed or deleted, the phone will stop playing the melody. This method works on most Xiaomi devices with MIUI 12-14, but requires caution:
- π Install a file manager with access to system folders, such as MiXplorer or FX File Explorer.
- π In the manager settings, enable the display of hidden and system files.
- π Cross the path. /system/media/audio/ui/ (In some models, the path may be /system/product/media/audio/ui/).
- π΅ Find a file with a name power_on.ogg (or bootanimation_sound.ogg) and rename it in power_on.ogg.bak.
If the file manager doesnβt let you rename the file, try copying it to another folder (like Downloads) and then deleting the original.
Install a file manager with root access
Make a backup copy of the file power_on.ogg
Check the path to system sounds
Rename the file, not delete it-->
π‘
If the phone stops loading after renaming the file, return the original name via TWRP or Fastboot.
β οΈ Note: On some models (e.g, POCO F3) systemfolder /system It can be protected from records even for file managers, in which case temporary root access is required (see Method). 4).
Method 3: Use ADB-commands (without root, but with debugging)
If previous methods have failed, you can turn off the download audio via ADB (Android Debug Bridge), which is Google's official tool that allows you to manage system settings without superuser rights.
- π₯οΈ A computer with installed Xiaomi drivers and ADB.
- π± Included Debugging by USB on the phone (in Settings) β The phone. β Version. MIUI, Tap 7 times, then return to the Additional Settings β Developer mode).
- π USB-cable (preferably original).
Instructions:
- Connect the phone to the PC and confirm the debugging permission.
- Open the command line (or Terminal) Mac/Linux) Enter: adb shell settings put global boot_sound 0
- Reset the device.
If the team doesnβt work, try an alternative:
adb shell su -c "mv /system/media/audio/ui/power_on.ogg /system/media/audio/ui/power_on.ogg.bak"On some firmware MIUI 14 (for example, on Xiaomi 13) standard ADB-The team may not work due to changes in the system configuration structure, in which case you will need to use Magisk (see Method 4).
| Xiaomi model | Does it work? ADB-team? | Alternative method |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 10/11 | Yes. | Method 2 (file manager) |
| POCO X3 Pro | Partially (root required) | Method 4 (Magisk) |
| Xiaomi 12/13 | No (locking in MIUI 14) | Method 5 (Castom Recovery) |
| Black Shark 4/5 | Yes. | Method 1 (sound settings) |
Method 4: Turning off sound via Magisk (with root rights)
If you already have Magisk installed, you can use the Disable Boot Sound module or manually edit system files, a method that works for all Xiaomi models, but requires:
- π Unlocked bootloader (Bootloader Unlock).
- π οΈ Installed by Magisk (version 24)+).
- π² Backup of data (in case of failure).
Step-by-step:
- Download the module. Disable_MIUI_Boot_Sound.zip (available XDA Developers).
- Open Magisk Manager, go to Modules and click Install from Storage.
- Select the downloaded file and confirm the installation.
- Reboot the phone.
If the module does not work, you can manually turn off the sound via Magisk:
su
mount -o rw,remount /system
mv /system/media/audio/ui/power_on.ogg /system/media/audio/ui/power_on.ogg.bak
mount -o ro,remount /systemβ οΈ Note: On devices with Dynamic Partition (e.g. Xiaomi) 11T Pro) the path to system files may be different. Use the find command /system -name "power_on.ogg", find the exact path.
What if after installing the module, the phone is fixated on the boot?
Method 5: Removing sound via TWRP (for advanced users)
If none of the previous methods worked, the radical way is to edit system files through TWRP, which is the most reliable method, but it requires:
- π§ Established TWRP (version).
- π± Unlocked loader.
- πΎ Backup of boot and system partition.
Instructions:
- Boot to TWRP (hold Power + Volume up when turned on).
- Go to Advanced β File Manager.
- Find the file. /system/media/audio/ui/power_on.ogg and remove it (or rename it).
- Reboot to the system.
If TWRP doesnβt see the system folder, try mounting the partition manually:
mount /systemWarning: Some models (e.g. Xiaomi 12S Ultra) may encrypt the system partition, in which case you will need to first decrypt the data via TWRP (enter the lock password when you request).
π‘
Using TWRP is the most reliable way, but it voids the warranty and can lead to a device blinking when an error is made.
What if the sound returned after the MIUI update?
One of the most common problems is the return of the boot sound after a firmware update, which is because MIUI restores system files when you install OTAs.
- π After updating, re-apply the selected method (for example, rename the file). power_on.ogg Or reinstall the Magisk module).
- π« Turn off automatic updates in Settings β The phone. β Updating the system β Settings (β) β Auto-update.
- π₯ Install the firmware manually through TWRP, pre-delete.
On devices with MIUI 14 (for example, Xiaomi 13 Pro) may require a more radical solution β install custom firmware (for example, LineageOS or Pixel Experience), where the download sound is turned off by default.
If you donβt want to lose official firmware, you can use Magisk to block system application updates:
magisk --denylist com.android.updater
