Why Xiaomi Keyboard Sounds Are Irritating and How to Remove Them Forever
The audio signals used in typing on Xiaomi smartphones are one of the most controversial features of MIUI. For some users, clicking keys creates a pleasant tactile feedback, for others, a source of constant irritation, especially in public, at work or at night, when loud noises can interfere with others.
Complicating the problem, Xiaomi uses several types of keyboards: standard Gboard (from Google), branded Mi Keyboard and third-party applications like SwiftKey. Each of them has its own audio settings, and there is no universal solution. In this article, we will discuss all possible ways to turn off sounds, from basic settings to hidden developer settings.
It's important to understand that keyboard sounds fall into two types: system clicks (set in Android settings) and keyboard sounds (set in its settings). Often users turn off only one, forgetting the second, which causes the problem to remain. Our instructions cover both cases.
Method 1: Turn off sounds in keyboard settings (for Gboard and Mi Keyboard)
To start with, the most obvious method is to turn off sounds directly in the keyboard settings, which works for most Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO models on MIUI 12-15, as well as smartphones with pure Android (e.g. Xiaomi 12T for the global market).
Instructions for Gboard (Google keyboard):
- Open any field to enter text (for example, in Messages or Notes).
- Touch the gear badge (βοΈ) on the keyboard panel to open its settings.
- Go to the Settings section β Pressed sound.
- Move the slider to the off position for the key sound parameter.
For the Mi Keyboard keyboard, the path is a bit different:
- Press the space on the keyboard with your finger and select the keyboard settings.
- Go to Additional Settings β Sound and vibration.
- Turn off the options of Press Sound and Vibration when pressed.
Is the keyboard running (Gboard/Mi Keyboard)?
Has the keyboard app been updated in Google Play?
Are there any active "Do Not Disturb" profiles?
Are the headphones connected (sometimes the sounds are duplicated there)-->
An important nuance: if you still hear sounds after you turn off, check if No Sound mode is activated in the system settings (more on this in the next section), and some design themes for MIUI can reset the keyboard settings, after they are installed, the sounds can return.
Method 2: Global shutdown of system sounds in MIUI
If disabling sounds in the keyboard itself didn't help, the problem could lie in Xiaomi's system sound effects. MIUI has separate tactile feedback settings that sometimes conflict with keyboard settings.
To turn them off:
- Go to Settings. β Sound and vibration.
- Choose Other Sounds and Vibrations.
- Turn off the sliders: π Touch sounds (responsible for clicking on screen) πΉ Keyboard sounds (duplicate settings from the previous section) π± Vibration when touching (if you want to remove the tactile response)

β οΈ Note: On some models POCO (for example, POCO X5 Pro) these settings may be in the Settings section β Additionally. β Special facilities β Sound effects. If you can't find the standard path, search by settings (the magnifying glass icon at the top of the screen).
After you turn off, restart your smartphone, which will help you apply the changes to all system processes. If you still have sounds, move on to the next method.
Method 3: Reset keyboard settings to factory
Sometimes the keyboard settings can get "lost" after updating MIUI or installing new themes, in which case resetting the parameters to factory values helps.
For Gboard:
- Open Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Find Gboard in the list and select it.
- Click Warehouse β Clear the data and confirm the action.
- Reboot your smartphone.
For Mi Keyboard:
- Go to Settings β Applications β All applications.
- Find the Mi Keyboard (or MiuiKeyboard).
- Choose Clear the cache and Clear the data.
- After the reboot, reset the keyboard by turning off the sounds in the first stage.
What happens after the keyboard is reset?
β οΈ Attention: On devices with MIUI 14+ Resetting the keyboard may cause some input languages to temporarily disappear. If the language you want to use is lost after the procedure, go to the keyboard settings. β Languages and input and add it again.
Method 4: Use Do Not Disturb Mode to Temporarily Shut Down
If you need to temporarily remove keyboard sounds (such as in a meeting or in a movie), the easiest way to do this is to use Do Not Disturb (DND) mode, which doesnβt permanently shut down sounds, but quickly solves the problem at the right time.
How to activate:
- Swipe down from the top edge of the screen to open the notification bar.
- Find the badge Don't disturb (π And then you slip it over.
- For fine-tuning, go to Settings. β Sound and vibration β Don't disturb and choose: π Scheduled (automatic on-time) π± Apps only (you can eliminate keyboard sounds by leaving call signals) π Complete silence (turns off all sounds, including alarm clocks)
The Do Not Disturb mode in MIUI has a hidden function: if you press the DND icon on the notification bar, you will see a quick access menu to exception settings, where you can allow sounds for specific applications (for example, leave signals for Phone or Messages), completely removing the keyboard clicks.
The downside is that the sounds will return after the mode is turned off, but it does not require changes in the keyboard settings and works on all Xiaomi models, including the Redmi Note 12 and POCO F5.
Method 5: Turning off sounds through developer settings (for experienced)
If standard methods don't work, you can use the developer's hidden settings, which are suitable for users who are ready for deeper changes to the system.
Steps to shut down:
- Activate Developer Mode: Go to Settings β About Phone. Tap 7 times on MIUI until you become a developer!

Input of text
- π Pressed sound
- π΅ Audio feedback
- Reset the device.

If the developer's settings don't have "Text Entering," try finding the USB Debug option and turn it on, and sometimes this will unlock additional options.
β οΈ Note: Some Xiaomi firmware (especially custom) may reset changes to the developer settings after the system update. MIUI, Repeat the procedure or consider alternative methods from this article.
This method is most effective for devices with MIUI 13-15, where standard keyboard settings may be ignored by the system, but beware: improper changes in developer mode can lead to unstable smartphone performance.
Comparison of methods: which way to choose?
To make the choice easier, we have collected the key features of each method in the table:
| Method | Difficulty | It works on all models. | Requires a reboot. | Do the sounds return after the update? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keyboard settings (Gboard/Mi Keyboard) | β | β Yes. | β No. | β οΈ Sometimes (after updating the keyboard) |
| Systemic sounds in MIUI | ββ | β Yes. | β Yes. | β No. |
| Resetting the keyboard | ββ | β Yes. | β Yes. | β οΈ Rarely (unless you update the keyboard) |
| Do not disturb mode. | β | β Yes. | β No. | β No (but the sounds will come back after the shutdown) DND) |
| Developer settings | βββ | β No (not on all firmware) | β Yes. | β οΈ Frequently (after update) MIUI) |
For most users, the first two are enough. If you encounter persistent sounds that don't go away, try the combination of keyboard reset + system sounds shutdown. Keep the developer mode as a last resort.

On devices with MIUI 14+, the keyboard sounds can be tied to the theme of the design. If the sounds returned after the theme change, check its settings in the Settings β Theme β My Theme β Sounds.
Frequent problems and solutions
Even after the instructions are turned off, Xiaomi users sometimes face the return of clicks.
Problem 1: The sounds returned after the MIUI update.
Solution: Updates often reset keyboard settings.
- π Have you been in the settings? Gboard/Mi Keyboard?
- π± Have there been new items in the settings? β Sound and vibration?
- π§ Do not need to re-activate the developer mode?
Problem 2: The sounds are only in a specific app (like WhatsApp or Telegram).
Solution: Some messengers have their own keyboard settings. Go to the problem app settings and find the Chat β Keyboard (or similar) section. Turn off the sounds there.
Problem 3: The sounds remain even after all the manipulations.
Solution: Maybe the sound is not coming from the keyboard, but from the system sound effects.
- π§ Connect headphones β if the sound has disappeared, the problem is in the dynamics of the smartphone.
- π Turn on No Sound (down volume button before vibration) and check if clicks remain.
- π οΈ Install a third-party keyboard (e.g. SwiftKey) and disable sounds in its settings.

If none of these methods worked, check if your Xiaomi has an app for recording screens or macros (such as MacroDroid) that can emulate key sounds.
