Why Keyboard Sounds Are Irritating and How to Turn Them Off Fast
The sound signals you press on a Xiaomi keyboard may seem like a cute thing for the first five minutes โ but within an hour they start to get on your nerves, especially when you're on public transport, in meetings, or at night, when every click seems louder than usual. Fortunately, the manufacturer has devised several ways to turn those sounds off, and you won't have to put up with a constant click-click.
Complicating the problem, the path to settings may be different across different versions of MIUI, and some users are faced with a situation where the keyboard sound returns after a system update or reset, and in this article we will look at all possible methods, from standard to hidden, that work on Redmi, POCO, Black Shark and other Xiaomi models based on Android 10โ14 and MIUI 12โ15.
If you've tried to turn off the sound through your keyboard settings, but it didn't work, don't give up. You may just have missed one step or you missed an alternative, and we'll go through each option in detail, including solutions for cases where standard methods don't work.
Method 1: Turning off sounds in the system keyboard settings
The most obvious and quickest method is to use the built-in settings of the Xiaomi keyboard, which is suitable for most users and takes no more than a minute.
- Open any application where the keyboard appears (such as Messages or Notes).
- Touch the gear badge (โ๏ธ) on the keyboard panel to go to its settings.
- Select Keyboard Settings or Additional Settings (the name may vary).
- Find the Sound section when pressed or Sound effects and move the slider to the โOffโ position.
If you have a keyboard installed from Google (Gboard), the path will be slightly different: Gboard settings โ Sound when pressed โ Off.

โ ๏ธ Note: Some Xiaomi models (e.g. Redmi Note 10 Pro) POCO X3 Pro) after the sound is turned off in the keyboard settings, it may reappear after the device is restarted. In this case, try method 2 or 3 of this article.
Method 2: Global shutdown of system sounds in MIUI
If the keyboard's sound is not turned off through its settings, the problem may lie in the global sound effects of MIUI. Xiaomi's firmware sometimes ignores the individual application settings if the system sounds are enabled.
- Go to Settings. โ Sound and vibration.
- Select Other Sounds (or System Sounds in older versions of MIUI).
- Turn off the sliders: ๐ Touch sound ๐น Keystroke sound ๐ฑ Screen lock sound (optional)

Important: On some devices (e.g. Xiaomi 12T or Redmi K50), disabling system sounds may affect notifications in messengers. If WhatsApp or Telegram stops working after these actions, return the settings back and use method 4.

If after turning off sounds, the keyboard has become less responsive, try turning on the No Sound mode in the notification curtain - this sometimes resets the settings conflicts.
Method 3: Reset keyboard settings to factory
If the keyboard keeps coming back, it may have been a configuration failure, and resetting without deleting data will help, a method that works for the standard Xiaomi and Gboard keyboards:
- Go to Settings โ Applications โ Application Management.
- Find the Xiaomi (or Gboard) keyboard and open the page.
- Select Warehouse โ Clear Data (not to be confused with Clear Cache!).
- Confirm the action. The keyboard settings will reset, but the saved words and the input history will remain.
- Reopen the keyboard and turn off the sound through its settings (see method 1).
โ ๏ธ Warning: After resetting, you may need to reconfigure auto-replace, language, and other keyboard settings. If you use SwiftKey or another third-party keyboard, this method won't help - go to method 5.

Method 4: Turn off sounds through Do Not Disturb mode
If the keyboard sound is not turned off by standard methods, you can get around the problem with Do Not Disturb mode, which does not remove the sound completely, but makes it inaudible in most situations:
- Open Settings โ Sound and vibration โ Do not disturb.
- Activate the slider Do not disturb.
- Then, click the schedule and choose the time (or time) to be convenient.
- In the Exclusions section, allow alarm clocks and contact notifications to avoid missing important calls.
Now the keyboard sound will be blocked by the system, but you will still receive notifications from messengers and calls, and the downside of this method is that it turns off all media sounds, including music and video, if you don't configure exceptions.
| Method | Suitable for | Pluses | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyboard settings | Standard keyboard, Gboard | Quick, no need to reboot. | May be reset after the update |
| MIUI system sounds | All keyboards. | Turns off the sound completely. | May affect notifications |
| Resetting the keyboard | Standard Xiaomi keyboard | Removes settings failures | Requires reconfiguration |
| Do Not Disturb mode | All models. | It works even when it fails. | Blocks other sounds |
Method 5: Remove or Replace Keyboard (for Power Users)
If none of these methods worked, the radical solution is to remove or replace the keyboard, which is suitable for users who are willing to sacrifice standard input for the sake of silence.
Option 1: Disable the system keyboard (requires an alternative):
- Install another keyboard from Google Play (such as Microsoft SwiftKey or AnySoftKeyboard).
- Go to Settings โ System โ Language and input โ Virtual keyboard.
- Select the installed keyboard and turn off the standard one (click on the basket icon or slider).
- In the settings of the new keyboard, turn off the sounds.
Option 2: Remove keyboard updates (if the sound appears after the update):
- Go to Settings โ Applications โ Xiaomi Keyboard.
- Press three points (โฎ) In the upper corner and select Remove Updates.
- Restart the device and check the sound.
โ ๏ธ Note: Removing the system keyboard may cause text input problems in some applications (e.g. Settings or Security).Be sure to have an alternate keyboard installed and activated before this step.

More tips: how to avoid sound return
Even after successfully disabling the keyboard sound, it can return after:
- ๐ Updates MIUI โ The firmware sometimes resets the settings.
- ๐ฑ Factory resets โ all personal data will be deleted.
- โก Cleaning the cache system through Settings โ Warehouse.
To avoid this:
- Create a backup of settings through Settings โ Additional โ Backup (select System Settings).
- Turn off automatic keyboard updates in Google Play (find it in the app list โ three points โ Disable auto-update).
- Use an alternative keyboard (such as Gboard) where sounds are controlled separately from the system.
๐ก
If the keyboard sound returned after the MIUI update, try to turn it off first via the keyboard settings. If it doesn't work, reset the keyboard settings (method 3) or wait for the next patch (usually sound bugs are fixed within 1-2 weeks after the firmware release).
