You've connected your headphones to a Xiaomi smartphone, but the sound is too quiet, even at maximum volume? The problem is familiar to many owners of Redmi, POCO or Mi devices - especially when using budget models or high-impedance headphones. In this article, we'll explore all possible ways to amplify the sound, from standard settings to hidden functions of the engineering menu and third-party applications.
Itβs important to understand that volume limits on Xiaomi are often set at the MIUI firmware level β this is done to protect your hearing and prevent damage to your speakers. However, if youβre sure that the headphones can withstand a lot of stress, you can bypass these limits. But remember, exceeding the safe volume level (above 85 dB) for more than 8 hours a day can lead to irreversible hearing loss.
We tested all methods on the Redmi Note 12 Pro+, POCO X5 Pro and Xiaomi 13T models with the latest MIUI 14/15 (Android 13/14). Most of the methods will work on older devices, but some features may not be available.
1. Checking basic sound settings
Before you resort to radical measures, make sure that the problem is not the banal settings. Often users miss the obvious settings that can affect the volume.
Open the Settings β Sound and vibration and check:
- π Media volume β slider should be at maximum (turn on music to see active regulator).
- π§ Amplify the sound in headphones β an option available on some models (for example, Xiaomi) 12S Ultra).
- π Sound balance β if the slider is moved left/right, one earphone will be quieter.
- π« Do not disturb β mode must be turned off (check in the notification curtain).
Itβs also worth checking the settings of a particular app, for example, YouTube Music or Spotify have separate volume controls that can limit sound regardless of system settings.
2. Enable the "Mi Sound Enhancer" mode
Many Xiaomi smartphones have a hidden Mi Sound Enhancer feature that improves the sound of the headphones. It automatically raises the volume and adds bass, but by default can be turned off.
You can activate it like this:
- Connect the headphones to the device.
- Open Settings β Additional β Special Features β Sound Improvement (the path may vary depending on the version of MIUI).
- Turn on the Mi Sound Enhancer switch.
- Select the profile of Headphones or Music.
If this option is not on the menu, try an alternative method:
Enter the phone code in the app: ##36446337##
Select Headset β and turn on Mi Sound Enhancerπ‘
If after activation the sound began to distort (wheezing, interference), try to turn off the function and use another amplification method.
3. Equalizer and sound effects setup
The built-in MIUI equalizer allows you not only to adjust the frequencies, but also indirectly increase the volume by amplifying certain ranges, for example, raising high and low frequencies creates the illusion of louder sound.
How to set up:
- Go to Settings β Sound and vibration β Equator.
- Choose Preset Rock, Pop or Bass β they usually add volumes.
- Manually lift the sliders at 60 Hz (bass) and 10 kHz (high frequencies) at 3-5 dB.
- Activate the Adaptive Sound option (if any).
For more flexible settings, use third-party equalizers, such as:
- ποΈ Wavelet (with support) LDAC aptX).
- π΅ Poweramp Equalizer (works with most players).
- π ViPER4Android (Magisk requires full-time work).
Install the preset "Bases"|Raise 60Hz on +4 dB|Raise 10kHz on +3 dB|Turn off "Normal volume"|Activate "Adaptive sound"-->
4.Use of the Engineering Menu (MTK/Qualcomm)
The most efficient, but also the most risky way is to edit audio parameters through an engineering menu. Xiaomi smartphones use Qualcomm Snapdragon or MediaTek chips, and each has its own method.
For Qualcomm processors:
- Open the phone app and enter the code: ##4636##
- Select Audio β Headset.
- Increase the Max Vol for Media and Voice Call by 2-3 units (no more!).
For MediaTek processors:
- Enter the code ##36446337##
- Go to Hardware Testing β Audio β Headset Mode.
- Increase Volume to 160 (default maximum is 140-150).
What happens if you overestimate the values in the engineering menu?
β οΈ Warning: Changes to the engineering menu are not saved after the device is restarted. To fix the settings, you will need root access or the Magisk module.
5. Sound amplification applications
If standard methods didn't work, you can use third-party utilities, and we tested 5 popular applications -- the results in the table below.
| Annex | Volume up. | Root is required. | Side effects | Compatibility with MIUI |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volume Booster | up to +20 per cent | β No. | Distortion by max | β Yes. |
| Precise Volume | up to +15 percent | β No. | No. | β Yes. |
| ViPER4Android | up to +30% | β Yes (full version) | High-frequency crackling | β οΈ Demands Magisk |
| FX Sound Enhancer | up to +10% | β No. | Advertising | β Yes. |
| Equalizer & Bass Booster | up to +12 per cent | β No. | Discharges the battery. | β Yes. |
The most balanced option is Precise Volume, which requires no root, no audio distortion, and is stable.
- Download APK from APKMirror (avoid unknown sources!).
- Allow installation from unknown sources in Settings β Applications β Special Access.
- Launch the app and move the Media Volume slider by +10-15%.

Rootless applications can only increase volume within the system limitations of MIUI. Radical amplification of sound requires superuser rights.
Hardware solutions: adapters and amplifiers
If software methods do not work, the problem may be in the impedance of headphones (resistance). budget Xiaomi smartphones (for example, Redmi 10A or POCO M4 Pro) poorly βrockβ headphones with impedance above 32 ohms.
- π External amplifier (DAC) β for example, Xiaomi USB-C Digital Audio Adapter or iBasso DC05. Connects through USB-C It provides a clear sound without distortion.
- π§ Adapter with amplifier - FiiO A1 or SoundMagic A10 (Suitable for headphones up to 300 ohms).
- π Bluetooth transmitter β if you use wired headphones, Xiaomi Bluetooth Audio Receiver can give a better sound than a 3.5 mm jack.
For models without 3.5-mm connector (for example, Xiaomi) 13 Pro) be sure to use quality USB-C/DAC-Cheap adapters often limit the volume due to a weak amplifier.
β οΈ Attention: When using external DAC Turn off all software amplifiers (such as Mi Sound Enhancer) to avoid double amplification and distortion.
7 Risks and how to avoid them
Turning up the volume above safe limits can cause not only hearing problems, but also hardware breakdowns.
- π₯ Overheating of the audio chip β especially on budget models (Redmi) 9A, POCO C31).
- π§ Damage to the speakers of headphones - membranes can break during prolonged work at high volume.
- π Accelerated battery discharge β amplification of sound increases the load on the processor.
- π¨ Automatic sound-off β MIUI can reset settings when overload is detected.
To minimize the risks:
- Do not raise the volume in the engineering menu by more than 10% of the maximum value.
- Use headphones with impedance no higher than 32 ohms (or an external amplifier for high-omnipotent models).
- Take breaks every 30-40 minutes when listening at high volume.
- Check the temperature of your smartphone periodically β if the back panel is hot, turn down the volume.

To check the current volume level in decibels, use the Decibel X application. A safe threshold is up to 80 dB for 40 hours a week (WHO recommendations).
