Are you tired of the fact that a standard call on Xiaomi Redmi 9 starts too quietly and you miss important calls? A surge (or βprogressiveβ) call is a feature in which the signal volume gradually increases from minimum to maximum, a solution that helps not to scare others with a sharp sound, but also ensures that you hear the call, even if the phone is in another room.
In this article, weβll look at all the ways you can set up a scaling call on Redmi 9, from built-in MIUI tools to third-party apps, how to get around them without root rights, and what apps do best, and how to check that the setup is working correctly, and what to do if the sound is still too quiet.
Importantly, not all versions of MIUI support incremental out-of-the-box call. If your Redmi 9 runs MIUI 12.5 or later, the odds of finding the built-in option are higher. Older versions will require workarounds, which we'll look at, too.
1. Check current sound settings on Redmi 9
Before you change your settings, make sure that the problem is not with the basic sound settings. On Xiaomi Redmi 9, the way to set up a call is as follows:
- Settings β Sound and vibration β Sound of a call
- Select any tune from the list (e.g. standard MI Ring).
- Click on the gear icon next to the selected melody.
Here you'll see a volume slider. If it's at a minimum, even the mounting bell will start too quietly. Set the volume to 70-80% -- that's enough to test the progressive magnification later.
β οΈ Warning: Some Redmi 9 firmwares have the surge call option hidden in the Additional Sound Settings menu. If you don't see it right away, scroll down the screen until the end.
Also check if Do Not Disturb or Quiet in the notification curtain is activated, which blocks the volume of the call from changing regardless of the settings.
2. Built-in mounting call function in MIUI
The latest versions of MIUI (starting with MIUI 12.5) have built-in support for scaling up calls to activate it:
- Go to Settings β Sound and vibration β Calling sound.
- Choose any melody and click on the gear next to it.
- Find the option βGrowing Callβ (or βProgressive Ringingβ in English).
- Activate the switch and set the build-up time (usually 5 to 30 seconds).
If this option is not available, then your version of MIUI does not support it, in which case move on to the following ways.
Which versions of MIUI exactly support the incremental call?
| MIUI version | Support for the mounting call | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MIUI 13/14 | Yes. | The function in the menu Call Sound β Additional |
| MIUI 12.5 | Yes (partially) | It may not be available on some regional firmware |
| MIUI 12 | No. | Requires an update or third-party applications |
| MIUI 11 | No. | It can only be enabled via ADB or root. |
On Redmi 9 with MIUI 12.5 Global, the scaling feature may not be available in European and Indian firmware, but it is in Chinese. If you are ready to experiment, you can try changing the firmware region (but this is risky and requires unlocking the bootloader).
3. Customization through the "Sounds and Melodies" app
If there's no built-in option, the easiest solution is to use a third-party app, and one of the best ones for this task is Ringtone Maker & Progressive Ringer (available on Google Play), which allows you to create a scaling call from any tune without root rights.
Instructions for setting:
- Install the app from Google Play.
- Open it and select Create Progressive Ringtone.
- Download your tune or choose from the standard ones.
- Set up a volume graph (we recommend starting at 20% and finishing at 100% in 15-20 seconds).
- Save the file and set it as a call in your phone settings.
The app creates a new audio file with a baked-in build-up effect, and the downside of this method is that you can't dynamically change the build-up time, but it works on any version of MIUI.
Download Ringtone Maker from the official store | Check file access rights | Select a tune lasting at least 30 seconds | Set the saved file as a default call-->
β οΈ Note: Some applications for creating incremental calls require permission to change system settings. If the call does not change after setting the melody, go to Settings β Annexes β Permits β Change system settings and activate access for the program.
4.Using Automate or Tasker for Advanced Customization
For users who want to flexibly configure a surge call with additional conditions (such as different behaviors for different contacts), automated applications like Automate or Tasker are suitable, which allow you to create scenarios where the volume of the call will change according to a given algorithm.
Example of the scenario for Automate:
Block: "Phone ringing" (Official on incoming call)
Block: "Wait" (Waiting 2 seconds)
3. Unit: "Volume set" (Sets volume to 30%)
Block: "Wait" (Waiting 5 seconds)
5. Block: "Volume set" (Reverses volume to 60%)
6.Block: "Wait" (Waiting 5 seconds)
Block: "Volume set" (Sets maximum - 100%)The advantage of this method is that you have complete control of logic, for example, you can make the contacts in the Favorite start at 50% and the others at 20%, but it will take time and basic knowledge of working with triggers to set up.
π‘
If you use Tasker, import a ready profile for a surge call from the community. Search for Progressive Ringing Tasker Profile on 4PDA or Reddit forums.
5. Manual editing of system files (for advanced)
This is only suitable for users with unlocked bootloader and root rights, and allows you to enable the hidden surge function right in the MIUI system settings, even if it is not in the interface.
Instructions:
- Install a file manager with root support (such as Root Explorer).
- Go to /system/csc/others.xml.
- Find a line. <CscFeature_Setting_EnableProgressiveRinging>false</CscFeature_Setting_EnableProgressiveRinging>.
- Replace false with true.
- Save the file, reboot the phone.
After that, the call settings should appear as an option to increase the call. Risks: improper editing of system files can lead to malfunctions in the phone.
π‘
Editing system files without backup can lead to a device blink, and use this method only if you are confident in your actions and ready to restore firmware.
6. Alternative solutions: vibration + sound
If you can't set up the mounting call, you can use a combination of vibration and sound to do the same thing. On Redmi 9, this is how you do it.
- Go to Settings β Sound and vibration β Vibration when calling.
- Select a vibration pattern (e.g., by increasing).
- Return to the sound of the call and set the volume to 50-60%.
So the result is that when you call in, you start to vibrate, and then you gradually add sound, and it's not a full-fledged surge call, but it helps you not miss the call if you have your phone in your pocket or on a soft surface.
Another option is to use progressively scaling tunes, and some standard MIUI calls (like Morning Flower) already have built-in volume dynamics, so listen to them in the settings and choose the most appropriate one.
7.Diagnostics of problems: why the mounting call does not work
If you set up a scaling call but it doesnβt work, check the following points:
- π Media Volume: Make sure the phoneβs overall volume is not kept to a minimum (adjusted by volume buttons in normal mode).
- π± Energy saving: In the mode of ultra-saving or balanced MIUI may limit background processes, including volume change.
- π Application Conflict: Antiviruses or SEOs (such as Xiaomiβs Security) can block third-party software for sound.
- π§ Resetting: If you have previously experimented with audio settings through ADB or root, perform reset: Settings β System system β Resetting settings β Resetting the sound settings.
If the problem persists, try testing the mounting call on another device with the same firmware.Perhaps the bug is related to a specific MIUI build for your Redmi 9.
