Why Xiaomiβs audio settings are lost and when you need a reset
Sound problems on Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO smartphones are one of the most common user complaints, and you may have noticed that the volume changes spontaneously, the bass goes down, and the sound in the headphones is quieter than usual, most often after a MIUI update, installing third-party audio apps, or accidentally changing the parameters in the engineering menu, and 80 percent of the time, resetting the audio settings helps, a procedure that returns all parameters to factory values without deleting personal data.
But before you start resetting, it's important to understand what's wrong with your device, for example, if the problem is only Bluetooth headphones, maybe it's the accessory itself, not the phone, and if the sound gets distorted when you play through speakers, it could indicate a hardware malfunction, and we've compiled all the possible scenarios where resetting would actually help, and when it's best to go to the service center.

How to diagnose a sound problem before resetting
Before you reset your settings, make sure that the problem is really there.
- Speaker test: Call your phone from another device, and if the speaker is not hearing well and the microphone is clean, the problem may be the noise reduction settings.
- Headphone check: Connect your headphones to work, and if the sound is normal, the phone's jack or speakers are faulty.
- Multimedia test: Turn on YouTube videos and music in Mi Music. If the volume is different, the equalizer settings are lost.
- Do Not Disturb Mode: Make sure it is turned off in Settings β Sound and vibration.
If at least one of the tests showed a discrepancy, try resetting the settings. If all the tests were successful, but the sound is still bad, the problem may be in the firmware or hardware.
Method 1: Reset sound through standard MIUI settings
The easiest and safest method is to use the built-in MIUI tools. It works on all Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices with a firmware version at least MIUI 10. The main advantage is that it does not require superuser rights and does not affect other phone settings.
Instructions:
- Open Settings (the gear icon on the main screen).
- Go to the section Sound and vibration.
- Scroll down and select Additional Sound Settings (on some models β Advanced Settings).
- Click Reset Sound Settings (may be called Reset Default Settings).
- Confirm the action by pressing OK in the dialog box.
After resetting, the phone will automatically restart. All volume settings, equalizer, sound effects (Mi Sound Enhancer, Dolby Atmos) and Bluetooth audio settings will return to factory values.
Calling the phone - volume of conversation
Turn on music β left/right channel balance
Connect Bluetooth headphones β sound quality
Check notifications β the volume of signals

β οΈ Note: Some models (e.g. Xiaomi) 12T and POCO F4) After the reset, the hardware acceleration of the sound may turn off. To return it, go to Settings. β The phone. β Version. MIUI And you tap it 7 times, and you'll open a developer menu where you want to turn on Debugging. USB and Hardware Acceleration of Audio.
Method 2: Reset via engineering menu (for power users)
If a standard reset didn't work, you can try to return the settings via the Engineering Mode, a deeper method that resets parameters that wouldn't affect a normal reset, including modem and audio codec settings, but it requires caution that wrong actions can cause the system to crash.
How to open the engineering menu:
- Open the Phone app.
- Enter the combination: ##36446337## (on some models - #4636###).
- Choose Hardware Testing β Audio.
- In the Audio Settings section, find Restore Default and confirm the reset.
After the procedure, the phone may be stuck on 10-30 If you've got a worse sound after you've restarted, it's OK. Don't interrupt the process or turn the device off. If the sound gets worse after you restarted, it's a hardware problem (e.g., contact oxidation speaker).
What to do if the engineering menu is not opened?
Method 3: Reset via ADB (for advanced users)
If the first two methods didnβt work, the ADB (Android Debug Bridge) is the Android debugging tool that allows you to reset sound parameters at the system level, including hidden settings that are not visible in the MIUI interface.
What you need:
- π₯οΈ A computer with installed Xiaomi drivers and ADB
- π USB-cable (preferably original)
- βοΈ Included debugging by USB phone-on
Instructions:
- Connect your phone to your PC and open the Command Prompt (Windows) or Terminal (macOS/Linux).
- Enter the command to check the connection: Adb devices should appear the name of your device.
- Reset the sound settings: adb shell settings delete global sound_effects_enabled adb shell settings delete global volume_music adb shell settings delete global volume_alarm adb shell settings delete global volume_notification adb shell settings delete global volume_system adb shell settings delete global volume_voice adb shell settings delete global volume_bluetooth_sco
- Reboot your phone: adb reboot
This method resets all audio profiles, including the custom settings of Dolby Atmos and Mi Sound Enhancer. If the sound has not recovered after the reboot, try to perform the command further:
adb shell pm clear com.miui.playerIt cleans the cache of the standard Mi Music player, which sometimes helps with sound distortion.

If ADB does not recognize the device, try reinstalling drivers via Mi PC Suite or manually specifying the path to drivers in Device Manager (Other Devices β Android section).
Method 4: Completely reset (if nothing helps)
If all the previous methods fail, then you'll have a hard reset, which will bring the phone back to factory status by deleting all the data, including apps, photos and accounts, and only use it as a last resort!
How to make a Hard Reset:
- Create a backup of data through Settings β Additional β Backup and Reset.
- Open Settings β About the phone β Reset settings.
- Choose Delete all data and confirm the action.
- Wait for the process to be completed (it will take 5-10 minutes).
Once reset, the phone will turn on as new, you'll have to reconfigure all the parameters, including sound, if the problem was a software failure, it should go away, if it wasn't, it's a hardware malfunction (e.g., a damaged audio codec or speaker).
β οΈ Warning: On devices with an unlocked bootloader, after a hard reset, you may need to reauthorize your Mi Account. Without it, the phone will lock! Make sure you remember your username and password.
What to do if the reset did not help: alternative solutions
If the sound is still bad after all the manipulations, try these methods:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| A quiet sound in the headphones | Volume limitation in MIUI | Turn off Safe Sound Mode in Settings β Sound β More |
| High volume distortion | The speaker or audio codec is damaged. | Check the phone at the service center (possible replacement speaker) |
| No sound in Bluetooth headphones | Failure of A2DP profile | Remove the device from the list of conjugates and connect again |
| Different sound in left/right channel | Balanced in accessibility settings | Check Settings β Special. capabilities β Audio balance |
| The sound disappears after the update | The bug in the firmware | Reverse to the previous version of MIUI via Fastboot |
If none of these methods worked, and the warranty on the phone is still valid, contact the authorized service center Xiaomi. In 2023-2026, frequent hardware problems with sound were observed in the models Redmi Note 11 (microphone defect) and Xiaomi 12 Pro (contact detachment speaker).

Before visiting the service center, back up your data via Mi Cloud or Google Account β after repair, the phone can be reset to factory settings.
