Loud or too quiet on Xiaomi can be a real problem β especially if you miss important calls because of the wrong settings. Unlike many Android smartphones, devices on MIUI offer advanced audio management options, from standard sliders to hidden features in the engineering menu.
In this article, we'll look at all the current ways to adjust the volume of a call, from basic to advanced, how to set the sound of calls, notifications and alarms separately, why the volume slider sometimes doesn't work, and what to do if the sound is gone after the MIUI update, and for owners of older models (for example, the Redmi Note 4 or Mi A1), we have prepared separate recommendations based on the features of their firmware.
1. Standard volume setting through buttons
The most obvious way is to use physical volume buttons on the sidebar of a smartphone, but in MIUI they work differently than on Android bare. Here's how to use them correctly:
- π During the call: press the Volume button + Or Volume, to change the level of the call immediately, and a slider with labels from 1 to 7 (maximum) will appear on the screen).
- π± Normal mode: the same buttons adjust media volume (music, video) To switch to call settings, click on the gear next to the slider.
- π Fast shutdown: if you hold the Volume button β 2-3 Sound will go into vibration, another hold will go into silent mode.
Important: On some models (e.g. POCO F3 or Xiaomi 12T) after upgrading to MIUI 14, buttons can reset the sound settings for notifications. To avoid this, check Settings β Sound and Vibration β Media and Notification Volume β Link the volume of notifications and media β this setting must be turned off.
π‘
If the volume buttons donβt respond, check if they are locked in the availability settings (Settings β Special Opportunities β Physical buttons).
2. Separate settings through the "Sound and Vibration" menu
To fine-tune each type of sound (call, notification, alarm) go to:
Settings β Sound and vibration β LoudnessHere you will see three independent sliders:
| Type of sound | Adjustment range | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Media | 0β15 | It affects music, video, games, it doesn't affect calls. |
| Call. | 0β7 | It regulates the volume of incoming and outgoing calls. |
| Notifications | 0β7 | Controls the sounds of SMS, messengers, system alerts. |
| Alarm clock | 0β7 | A separate slider, not associated with other settings. |
β οΈ Note: On smartphones with Harman Kardon speakers (e.g. Xiaomi) 11T Pro or Redmi K50 Gaming) The maximum volume of the call can be automatically limited to protect the speakers. To remove the restriction, go to Settings β Additionally. β Sound Lab and disable the option Protect speakers.
Open the menu "Sound and vibration"|Check the slider "Call"|Make sure that the "Do Not Disturb" mode is not turned on"|Reboot your phone if the sound is gone after the update-->
3. Engineering menu: hidden volume settings
If standard methods don't help (e.g., sound is too quiet even at maximum), you can use the engineering menu, which is suitable for experienced users and requires caution!
Instructions:
- Open the Phone app and enter the combination: ##3646633##.
- Go to the Hardware Testing β Audio section.
- Select Normal Mode (for normal calls) or Headset Mode (for headset).
- In the Type field, specify Sph (microphone) or Speaker (dynamics).
- Adjust Level (0-160) and Value (0-255). For most models, the safe maximum is Level=140, Value=200. Exceeding can lead to distortion of sound!
β οΈ Attention: Incorrect settings in the engineering menu can cause damage to the speakers or microphone failure. If after the changes the sound is completely lost, reset the settings through Settings β System system β Resetting settings β Reset the network settings.
What to do if the engineering menu is not opened?
4. Volume setting for specific contacts
MIUI 13/14 has a customized volume setting for individual contacts, which is convenient if you want to make calls from important people (such as your boss or loved ones) louder than others.
How to set up:
- Open the Contacts app and select the contact you want.
- Click Edit (pencil icon).
- Scroll down to the Call Sound section.
- Activate the special sound option and select the melody.
- Click on the speaker icon next to the melody to adjust the volume (available 3 levels: standard, loud, maximum).
π‘ Lifehack: For maximum volume contacts, set a unique tune (such as a siren or a repeating sound) so you never miss their call, even in a noisy place.
5.Sound problems after MIUI update
Many users are faced with the fact that after updating the firmware, the volume of the call is reset or the sound becomes quieter, this is due to changes in MIUI's policies on audio management.
- π Resetting sound settings: Go to Settings β System system β Resetting settings β Reset the sound settings. That'll bring all the sliders back to factory values.
- π± Cache Clearing: Go to Settings β Annexes β Application management β Phone, then press Warehouse. β Clear the cache.
- π Verification of uniformity: In Settings β Sound and vibration β Volume uniformity Turn off the option if it is active β it automatically reduces the volume of βsharpβ sounds.
If the problem persists, check the firmware version:
- For MIUI 12 and below: Update to the latest stable version via Settings β About Phone β System Update.
- For MIUI 13/14: try to roll back to the previous version via Settings β About Phone β MIUI Version β Update Pack (you need a firmware file).
π‘
After upgrading to MIUI 14, some models (such as Xiaomi 12 or Redmi Note 11) may lose sound in the headset. Solution: reconnect the headphones and reset Bluetooth settings to Settings β Connected devices β Bluetooth β Additional β Reset settings.
Alternative methods: applications and widgets
If you don't like the built-in MIUI tools, you can use third-party apps, and we tested a few options and selected the most reliable ones:
| Annex | Functions | Reference | Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volume Booster | Increase volume to 200% | Google Play | It only works with root rights on new versions of MIUI. |
| Precise Volume | Accurate setup with 1% increments | Google Play | Supports separate profiles for headphones and speakers. |
| MacroDroid | Automatic time/place adjustment | Google Play | You can set the volume of the call to increase at certain hours. |
β οΈ Note: Voice Booster, Speaker Boost applications can damage speakers when used at maximum volume for long periods of time, and we recommend using them only in emergency situations (e.g., to make calls in noisy places).
For quick access to the sound settings, you can add a widget to the main screen:
- Press and hold the empty space on the main screen.
- Select the Widgets β Settings.
- Drag the Sound widget or Quick Settings to the screen.
7. Features on older Xiaomi models
Owners of 2017-2019 devices (e.g. Redmi Note 5, Mi 8, POCO F1) often face unique audio issues.
- π Volume Limit: On models with Mono speakers (e.g. Redmi) 5A) The maximum volume of the call is physically lower than that of stereo speakers.
- π± MIUI 10 and below: There is no separate alarm clock slider in these versions - its volume is tied to notifications.
- π§ Problems after firmware: Xiaomi Mi A1/A2 (With pure Android, the call sound is regulated via the standard Android menu, but can be reset after a security update.
For older models, the following solutions are relevant:
- If the sound is gone after changing the speaker, check the plume - on the Redmi Note 4X and Mi 6, it often departs.
- The POCO F1 with Global ROM may not have volume control on the headphones. Solution: reflash on the EEA ROM.
- For the Mi Max 2/3, the audio driver update is available via Settings β About Phone β Version of the kernel (click 5 times in a row).
