Changing the standard melodic signal to your favorite song is the first step to personalizing Xiaomi or Redmi. Standard ringtones built into the MIUI shell or the new HyperOS often seem boring or too quiet to users. Fortunately, Android provides ample opportunities to replace the incoming call sound with any audio file stored in the device's memory.
However, Chinese smartphone owners often face the unobvious nuances of customization. Unlike pure Android, there are system limitations and features of the file system that can confuse a beginner. For example, simply choosing a track in a gallery is not always possible due to the security policy of modern versions of the OS.
In this article, we will take a look at all the ways you can install music, from the classical method through settings to using third-party apps, how to prepare a file correctly, where to move it, and what to do if the system ignores your command. The instructions are relevant for most models, including the Redmi Note, Xiaomi Mi and the Poco series.
Preparation of the audio file for installation
Before you try to install a track, you need to make sure that the file itself meets the technical requirements of the system. Not every audio format is supported by standard Android tools without conversion. The most universal and recommended format is MP3, which is readable by all smartphones without exception.
It is also important to pay attention to bitrate and recording duration. Too long compositions can be cropped by the system or play incorrectly as a call signal. The optimal ringtone duration is 15 to 30 seconds, although modern versions of MIUI allow the use of full tracks.
The file should be saved in a readable memory area, and if you downloaded music from the Internet, it probably got into the download folder, and for ease of sound management, you should move it to a dedicated directory.
💡
Use online converters or editorial apps to cut the brightest snippet out of a song – that’s what will sound when you call.
Check the source of the file. If the music was received via messengers like Telegram or WhatsApp, it can be hidden in the app cache. In such cases, first save the audio to the file manager so that the system sees it as a separate media file.
The classic way through smartphone settings
The most reliable and regular method of changing a tune does not require installing additional software. It works steadily on all versions of firmware, including the latest security updates. To begin, open the main menu and find the Settings icon.
In the settings that open, you have to go to the audio section, and depending on the version of the shell, this item can be called "Sound and vibration" or just "Sound," and this is where you have all the volume and audio selection adjustments.
The algorithm of actions is as follows:
- 🎵 Find the “Rington” or “Rington” item at the top of the screen.
- 📂 Click on it to open the system player for file selection.
- 🔍 If your track is not listed, select the “Select on Device” button or the plus icon.
- ✅ Confirm your choice by clicking “OK” or the tick in the corner of the screen.
☑️ Checking the call settings
Once confirmed, the system will immediately apply the changes, so you can check the result by asking someone to call you or making a test call to your number from another phone. If the sound hasn't changed, try restarting the device.
Use of the built-in “Themes” application
Themes is not just a wallpaper catalog, but a powerful tool for managing system sounds, which many users ignore, preferring standard settings, but this is where cloud ringtone libraries are stored.
To take advantage of this method, run the Themes app and switch to the Ringtones tab, which features a huge catalog of tracks, from popular hits to sound effects, and you can listen to any of them before installing.
The advantage of this method is that the tracks are already optimized in volume and length, and the app will automatically create the necessary shortcuts in the audio selection menu.
- Open the Profile tab or menu in the Themes app.
- Select “Download” or “Local Ringtones”.
- The system will prompt you to select an audio file from internal memory.
- After selection, the track will be added to your collection and will be available for installation.
Why does the Topic app require a Mi Account?
It is worth noting that Themes may require an internet connection to download the directory. If you have limited traffic, it is better to use the classic method through the settings described in the previous section.
Set up individual ringtones for contacts
One of the most useful features of a smartphone is the ability to assign unique tunes to specific subscribers, which allows you to know who is calling without taking the phone out of your pocket, and you can do this directly through the standard Caller or the Contacts app.
Open a contact list and find the person you want. Click on their name to open their subscriber card. Depending on the version of MIUI, you either have to click on three dots in the corner of the screen and select "Tune a ringtone" or find the appropriate item in the contact editing menu.
Once you select the Rington, you will open a standard melody selection window, which is exactly the same as setting up a general call:
- 📞 Select the sound source (system or memory).
- 🎶 Find and tag the desired music file.
- 💾 Press “OK” to save the binding.
Now, when you call in from that contact, you'll hear the song you've chosen, not the melody you've shared, and it's especially convenient for calling from work, family or courier services, and if you decide to delete the contact, the personal ringtone will also reset.
💡
Individual ringtones override the overall sound settings, so for each important contact, the setting must be made separately.
Working with the file system and folders
Sometimes the system doesn't see the downloaded file, although it's definitely in memory, and that's because of the folder structure in Android, and in order to make sure that the track is displayed in the list of available calls, it's recommended to put it in the Ringtones root folder.
To do this, open the Explorer app or any file manager. Go to the internal storage. If the Ringtones folder isn't there, create it manually (it's important to follow the letter register). Move your audio file there.
The table below shows the main paths and folders the system uses to classify sounds:
| Type of sound | Recommended folder | Note | Visibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main call. | /Ringtones | Automatically appears on the list | Tall. |
| Notifications | /Notifications | For SMS and messengers | Tall. |
| Alarm clock | /Alarms | For the system alarm clock. | Medium |
| Arbitrary | /Music | Requires manual search | Low. |
After moving the file, it may be necessary to reboot the media service or the smartphone itself, so that the indexer rescans the memory and adds the track to the database of available sounds.
Remember that newer versions of Android have limited access to the file system. If the explorer doesn’t allow you to create a folder, try using Xiaomi’s built-in Files app, which has the required default permissions.
Resolving and technical problems
Even following the instructions, users may encounter situations where music is not played or played. Most often the problem lies in file formats or power saving settings. If the file is not selected, check its extension - MP3, M4A or OGG work best.
Another common reason is to work in Do Not Disturb or No Sound mode, in which case the phone will vibrate or remain silent, ignoring the chosen ringtone, check the side mode switch (if any) and the audio settings.
⚠️ Warning: If the sound is hoarse or interrupted after installing the ringtone, it is possible that the bitrate of the file is too high for the speakers, or the file is corrupted).
It’s also worth checking the permissions for the application you’re choosing music through. Sometimes the system needs access to files that were accidentally denied before. Go to Settings → Apps → All apps, find your player or explorer, and make sure that access to memory is allowed.
In rare cases, cleaning the cache of the Themes or Sound app helps. To do this, go to App Management, select the system component of the sound, and click Clear Cache. This will not delete your files, but will reset temporary interface errors.
⚠️ Note: Do not use files with DRM-Protected (for example, purchased in older versions of iTunes or taken from paid subscriptions with protection) such tracks will not be played as a system call without removing the protection.
