Xiaomi smartphone owners often seek to personalize the device to not only know who is calling, but also to understand which number the call is coming to without taking the gadget out of their pocket. The standard ringtone can merge with the notifications of other applications, so installing a unique melody on a particular subscriber becomes not just a whim, but a necessity. In the MIUI operating system and the new HyperOS, this process has its own features that differ from pure Android, which sometimes causes difficulties for users.
The main difficulty is that the standard Xiaomi contact manager can hide some functions or work incorrectly without first configuring access rights. In addition, the shell file system requires a certain approach to the selection of audio files. Audio file preparation and format verification
Before you start setting up, you need to make sure that your music file is compatible with the operating system of the smartphone. Xiaomi, like most modern Android devices, natively supports MP3, WAV, OGG and M4A formats. However, for stable operation of the call, it is best to use a classic MP3 with a bit rate of at least 128 kbit / s, since too high quality or rare codecs can lead to the fact that the melody simply does not play.
The important aspect is the length of the track. System constraints often prevent you from setting a track that is too long to contact, as this can cause a delay in the start of playback or malfunction of telephony. The optimal length of the snippet is 15 to 30 seconds. If you want to play a full song, the system can automatically crop it or, conversely, play only the first seconds, which will spoil the impression.

The location of the file also matters. In order for the melody to appear in the list of available sounds, it must be in a folder that is accessible to the system. Usually it is an internal memory at the root or a folder of Music, Ringtones. If the file lies deep in the bootloader folders or in hidden application directories, the standard contact explorer may not see it.

Standard method of installation through the Contacts application
The most obvious and frequently used method is to configure directly through the standard Contacts app, which is preinstalled on every Xiaomi device, which requires no additional software installation and works on most firmware versions unless the functionality has been cut by the carrier or regional restrictions.
To start, open the Contacts app or go to Phone and select the Contacts tab. Find the right subscriber in the list and click on their name to open the card. Here, you should pay attention to the top of the screen or the three-point menu where additional actions are often hidden. In some versions of MIUI, you need to click the Change button (pencil icon) to activate the editing fields.
Once you go into edit mode, scroll down until you see Melody or Rington, and the default is Default or System. When you click on this, you open the system player to select the sound, and you can select one of the preset tunes or click on the Select Music on the device button (often looking like a folder or plus-plus icon) to download your file.

Configure through the system application Phone
In some versions of the HyperOS shell or in regional firmware (for example, in India or Russia), the logic of the work may differ. Open the Phone app and go to the Contacts tab. Find the right subscriber. Unlike the previous method, you sometimes need to click on the contact avatar or three dots in the top right corner of the card to see the drop-down menu, and this menu may include "Appoint a ringtone" or "Set a call tune."
If this is not explicitly available, try pressing the edit button (pencil). In the fields that open, look for the "Sound" or "Call Melody" section. In newer versions of MIUI, this item can be hidden under the "More" or "More" button if the smartphone screen is narrow in resolution or a certain display mode is enabled.
⚠️ Attention: If you are using SIM-card with the number from the operator, make sure that the contact is saved in the format (with or without the country code) in which it is determined by the network, otherwise the individual melody may not work.
Importantly, Google’s Phone app (which is often used instead of the standard one) has its own interface, clicking on the contact name, then selecting three dots in the corner and “Install a ringtone.” The logic remains similar, but the visual design and location of the buttons can confuse a user who is used to Xiaomi’s standard shell.

There are situations when standard Xiaomi tools do not work correctly: there is no melody selection point, the system freezes when trying to save or the file is not selected. In such cases, third-party applications from Google Play come to the rescue, which take over the management of contacts and calls with more extensive functionality.
