You want every important contact in your Xiaomi to have a unique tune? Not only is it convenient, you'll know who's calling without looking at the screen. In modern versions of MIUI (12 to 14), customization of individual ringtones is hidden deeper than it seems, and in some models it has been removed from the main menu altogether. But don't worry: we've put together all the working methods, including workarounds for smartphones, where the option is disabled by default.
In this article you will find:
- ๐ Official method through contact settings (works on 80% of models)
- ๐ฑ Alternative methods for MIUI featureless
- ๐ต How to add custom tunes (including: MP3 phone-memory)
- โ๏ธ Solving problems if the melody is not played or reset
All the instructions are checked on the current firmware of 2026 and adapted to popular models: Redmi Note 12/13, POCO X5/F5, Xiaomi 13/14 and others. If your smartphone runs on Android 12+ with a shell MIUI 13/14, you will definitely find a working version here.
1. Standard method: through contact settings
The most obvious method is to assign a tune directly to a subscriber card, but in recent MIUI versions, this menu item may be missing or hidden.
- Open the Contacts app (an icon with a personโs silhouette).
- Select the contact you want from the list.
- Press three points (โฎ) top-right โ Edit.
- Scroll down to the Melody of the Call block (if not, read the next section).
- Slip on the current tune โ select a new one from the list of standard ones or click Add to download yours.
An important nuance: on some firmware, the Call Melody item only appears after you save the contact to the phone book (not to a Google account).
What to do if there is no "melody of the call"?
2. Alternative method: via the โPhoneโ application
If there is no necessary option in Contacts, try assigning a melody through the call log:
- Open the phone application (green handset).
- Go to the Contacts tab (lower menu).
- Find the right contact โ click on it to open the card.
- Tap it on three points (โฎ) โ Set the melody.
- Choose a ringtone from the offered or download your own (more on this below).
This method often works where the standard one refuses, and if there is no option, check if it is disabled in the MIUI laboratory (for more on this in section 4).
๐ก
A tip for Redmi Note 11/12 owners: If the tune is not played after you assign it, restart your phone. This resets the audio cache.
3. How to Add Your Melody (MP3, M4A) to Xiaomi
Standard ringtones in Xiaomi are quickly boring. Fortunately, you can use any audio files from your phone's memory. Here's how to do it:
- Put your audio file (such as song.mp3) in the Ringtones folder on the internal storage, and if it's not, create it manually.
- Open Settings โ Sound and vibration โ Call melody.
- Your file will appear in the list. Select it.
- Now assign that tune to a specific contact (see section 1 or 2).
File requirements:
- ๐ต Format: MP3, M4A, WAV (5MB).
- โฑ๏ธ Duration: optimally 15-30 seconds (long files are cropped).
- ๐ Location: Only in internal memory (not on the SD-map!).
โ๏ธ Preparation of the custom ringtone
4. Enabling a hidden function through the MIUI Laboratory
On some firmware, the custom tune option is disabled by default to activate it:
- Open the Settings. โ The phone.
- Tap 5-7 times on the MIUI version until you become a developer!
- Go back to the basic settings โ Additional โ Developer settings.
- Find the MIUI Lab and activate it.
- Inside the lab, turn on the option of Individual Contact Melodies (the name may vary).
Note: MIUI 14 Global may not have this option, so use third-party apps (Section 5).
๐ก
Activating the MIUI lab will unlock hidden features, but can cause the phone to malfunction.
5. Third-party applications for individual tunes
If the built-in methods donโt work, install one of these apps (available on Google Play):
| Annex | Features | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Zedge | Large library of ringtones + MP3 support | Advertising requires access to contacts |
| Ringtone Maker | Cutting audio, creating melodies from songs | Paid functions for export |
| Contact Ringtones | Direct assignment of melodies to contacts | It doesnโt work on Android 13+ without root. |
Instructions for Zedge:
- Install the application and open it.
- Go to the Ringtones tab โ select the sound you like.
- Click Set โ Contact Ringtone โ Select Contact.
๐ก
Before installing third-party apps, check permissions: they should not request access to SMS or geolocation without a reason.
6 Problem Solving: The melody is not played or reset
If the assigned melody doesnโt work, check out these points:
- ๐ Loudness: Make sure that the settings โ The sound is not off.
- ๐ต Do Not Disturb Mode: Turn it off or add contact to exceptions.
- ๐ Cash: Clear the cache of the Contacts and Phone apps in Settings โ Annexes.
- ๐ฑ Update: Check the relevance of the firmware in Settings โ Update of the PO.
A common problem on the POCO M4 Pro and Redmi 10 is that once you reboot, the tunes are reset. This is a MIUI 13 bug. The solution is to use the Contact Ringtones app with a fixation of the settings.
โ ๏ธ Attention: On phones with duals SIM-In cards, individual tunes can only work for the main card, to assign a ringtone to the second card. SIM, Use third-party utilities.
7. Features for different Xiaomi models
The manufacturer often changes the layout of functions depending on the model and the region of the firmware.
| Model | MIUI version | Does the standard method work? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi 13/13 Pro | 14 Global | Yes. | Option in the contact menu, but requires saving to the phone book |
| POCO F5 | 13.5 | No. | Activation is required through a laboratory or third-party software |
| Redmi Note 12 | 14 China | Yes. | The function is only available for contacts saved on the device. |
For Chinese firmware (without Google services), the path to settings may be different. For example, on Xiaomi 12S Ultra with MIUI 14 CN, the option is hidden in Settings โ Apps โ Phone โ Melodies.
