The notification melody on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro can get boring quickly β especially if youβve been using your smartphone for years. Fortunately, MIUI offers flexible audio settings that allow you to not only select one of your preset tunes, but also download your own. However, not everyone knows exactly where these options are hiding, especially after firmware updates that sometimes move menu items.
In this article, we will discuss three working ways to change the sound of notifications β from basic selection from the standard set to install custom tunes through the file manager. Separately, we will focus on the typical errors (for example, when a new sound is not played) and the nuances of working with MIUI 12/13/14. If you want your Redmi Note 8 Pro to βspeakβ in another language, read on.
Method 1: Standard Replacement through MIUI settings
The easiest method is to use built-in system options, which is suitable for those who do not want to go into the file structure or install third-party applications.
- Open the Settings app (the gear icon on the desktop).
- Go to the section Sound and vibration.
- Tap on the default Notice (in some versions of MIUI, it may be called Notification Sound).
- In the list that opens, select any tune you like. To listen, click on the track.
β οΈ Note: If the list does not show all the sounds, check if the system files are hidden:
- Go back to Settings β Additional β File Manager.
- Activate the option to show hidden files.
The standard MIUI set includes about 20 tunes, but the range depends on the firmware version. For example, MIUI 14 introduced new sounds with spatial effect, and MIUI 12 had significantly fewer of them. If you lacked options, move to the second method.
Method 2: Install custom audio through file manager
If you don't like standard tunes, you can download your own, and any audio file in.mp3,.wav or.ogg format up to 30 seconds long will do, and the main thing is to place it in the file system correctly.
Instructions:
- π Connect your smartphone to your PC or download the tune directly to your phone (for example, through your browser).
- π Open the File Manager and go to the Ringtones folder (its path: Internal Memory) β MIUI β If you don't have a folder, create it manually.
- π΅ Move your audio file to this folder. The file name should contain only Latin characters (e.g., Latin characters, my_notification.mp3).
- π Restart the phone (required!) and the new sound will appear in the notification list.
β οΈ Attention: MIUI caches audio files, so without rebooting, the new track may not show up. Also make sure the file is less than 5MB, otherwise the system will ignore it.

If the sound never appeared after the reboot, check:
- π File resolutions: it should be readable (click on file) β Properties β Permits).
- π Format: MIUI best perceived MP3 bitrate 128-192 kbit/s.
- π The path to the file: it should be in the MIUI/ringtone, not the root of memory.
Method 3: Use of third-party applications (Zedge, Ringtone Maker)
If the first two methods seem complicated, you can use specialized applications that not only make it easier to set sounds, but also offer huge libraries of ready-made tunes.
| Annex | Advantages | Deficiencies | Reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zedge | More than 1 million sounds and wallpapers, weekly updates, integration with MIUI. | Advertising in the free version requires registration for download. | Google Play |
| Ringtone Maker | Editor of sounds (cutting, mixing), support for all formats. | Interface in English, limited free version. | Google Play |
| MIUI Ringtone | Optimized for Xiaomi, minimalist design, no advertising. | Little sound in the database, rare updates. | AppGallery |
To set the sound through Zedge:
- Download and install the app from Google Play.
- Open it and select Notification Sounds.
- Find your favorite tune and click Download.
- After downloading, tap Set as notification sound β the system will automatically apply the changes.
β οΈ Note: Some applications (such as Ringtone Maker) require permission to access files and microphones. APK unverified!

If it doesnβt play back after you set the sound through Zedge, try manually selecting it in the MIUI settings (Settings β Sound β Default Notifications).
The solution to the problem: why the new sound does not work
Sometimes, after a change of tune, the notifications continue to sound the same, and this can be due to several reasons:
- π Cash system: MIUI It saves the old settings in the cache. To reset it, go to Settings. β Annexes β Application management β Settings and click Clear Cache.
- π± Application conflict: Some messengers (like WhatsApp or Telegram) have their own notification sounds.
- π Do Not Disturb Mode: If it is activated, notifications may come without sound. β Sound. β Don't disturb.
- π Update MIUI: After major updates (for example, with the MIUI 12 on MIUI 14) the audio settings may be reset. Check them after the update.
If the problem persists, try resetting the sound settings to factory:
- Go to Settings β System and device β Resetting.
- Select Resetting Sound Settings (not to be confused with a full reset!).
- Confirm the action and restart the phone.
What if the sound of notifications disappears after the reboot?
Features for different versions of MIUI
The interface of the audio settings may vary depending on the firmware version.
| MIUI version | The path to sound settings | Features |
|---|---|---|
| MIUI 12 | Settings β Sound and vibration β Default notifications | There is no MIUI/ringtone folder, so you can place the sounds in Ringtones or Notifications. |
| MIUI 13 | Settings β Sound β Sound of notifications | Spatial sound support (for standard tunes only) |
| MIUI 14 | Settings β Sound and vibration β Notifications | The option of adaptive sounds (automatic volume control) appeared. |
MIUI 14 has a unique Dynamic Notification feature on the Redmi Note 8 Pro, which automatically adjusts the sound to the noise level in the room. To activate it, go to Settings β Special Features β Sound Effects and turn on the Adaptive Sound option.
If your version of MIUI is not listed in the table, check it in Settings β About Phone β MIUI version. Older firmware (e.g. MIUI 11) may require manual editing of system files β but this is risky without root rights.
How to return the standard notification sound
If you are disappointed with the experiments with custom melodies, you can return the factory sound in a few steps:
- Open Settings β Sound and vibration β Default notifications.
- Select the first item on the list, usually MIUI or Default.
- If there is no standard sound, reset the sound settings (see Problem Solving).
β οΈ Attention: Some firmware may also reset the volume of notifications after resetting the sound. β Sound. β Loudness.
If you have installed custom sounds through a file manager, remove them from the Ringtones and Notifications folders so they don't appear in the list.
- Open the file manager.
- Go to the Inner Memory β MIUI β ringtone (or Ringtones).
- Delete all user files (except system files).

Before removing custom sounds, make a backup copy of them - after cleaning the folder, it will be impossible to restore files.
