Xiaomi Redmi 8 Pro is a popular smartphone with flexible audio settings, but not all users know how to make the most of it. Replacing a standard melody with a unique ringtone or notification sound is not only a way to personalize the device, but also make it more convenient in everyday use, for example, you can distinguish a call from a message by sound or assign different tunes to different contacts.
In this article, we will explore all the ways available to change audio signals on the Redmi 8 Pro, from basic settings to advanced methods using a file manager and third-party applications.
If you've never changed sounds on Xiaomi before, don't worry, it's intuitive even for beginners, and for experienced users, we've developed advanced methods, including working with system folders and circumventing MIUI constraints.
Method 1: Standard Replacement through Phone Settings
The easiest method is to use built-in MIUI tools, which are suitable for replacing the main ringtone, notification sound and alarm without installing additional programs.
To change the ringtone:
- Open the Settings app (the gear icon on the home screen).
- Go to the section Sound and vibration.
- Select the item Melody of the call.
- Scroll down to see all the options available, and there are both standard MIUI sounds and user-uploaded ones (if they were added earlier).
- Touch the right tune to listen to it, then press OK to confirm.
The sounds are also changed for:
- π Notifications β in the same section Sound and vibration β The melody of notifications.
- β° Alarm clock - through the app Clock β Alarm clock β Settings (icon) βοΈ) β Signal sound.
- π Certain Contacts β Open Contact in the Phone App, click Edit and select Call Melody.
Note that Redmi 8 Pro has a limited number of system tunes available by default. If you need more options, move on to the following ways.
π‘
If your favorite tune isnβt on the list, try rebooting your phone β sometimes new sounds are only displayed after the reboot.
Method 2: Adding your music to the ringtone
You can use any of them. mp3-It's a ringtone, a melody from the phone's memory:
- Download or copy an audio file in.mp3,.m4a or.wav format (no more than 5 MB in size for stable operation) to your phone.
- Move the file to one of the system folders for ringtones: /storage/emulated/0/Ringtones/ for ringtones; /storage/emulated/0/Notifications/ for notifications; /storage/emulated/0/Alarms/ for alarms.
If you donβt have folders, create them manually through any file manager (e.g. Mi File Manager or Total Commander).
Settings β Sound and vibration β Melody of the call
Important: Some users experience a problem when added files are not displayed.
- π Unsupported format (e.g.,.flac or.ogg does not always work);
- π Wrong file location (check the path to the folder);
- π No reboot after addition.
What if the file does not appear in the list?
Method 3: Using the Zedge Ringtones App
If you don't want to manually search and download tunes, use Zedge, one of the most popular services for downloading ringtones and wallpaper, which is free and has a huge library of sounds for every taste.
Instructions for installation and use:
- Download Zedge from Google Play.
- Open the app and allow access to the phoneβs memory.
- In the top menu, select the Ringtones section.
- Find your favorite tune through search or categories (for example, βCinemaβ, βGamesβ, βNatureβ).
- Click on the track, then select Download.
- After downloading, click Set as and select where to apply the sound: call, notification or alarm.
Zedge automatically saves files to the correct system folders, so they immediately appear in the phone's settings.
- π΅ A huge selection of tunes (including exclusive sounds from movies and games);
- π Easy search by tags and categories;
- π± Automatic installation without manual file movement.
Method 4: Assigning unique tunes to contacts
Redmi 8 Pro has a customized ringtone for each contact, which is convenient if you want to know who is calling without looking at the screen, for example, for loved ones you can put a calm melody, and for work - a more formal sound.
How to do this:
- Open the Contacts app.
- Find the right contact and click on it.
- In the upper right corner, tap on the editing icon (pencil or three dots β Edit).
- Scroll down to the Melody of the Call and select it from the list.
- Save the changes.
If you want to use your melody for contact, first add it to the Ringtones folder (as described in Method 2), then select in the contact settings.
Limitations of this method:
- β Does not work for group chats in instant messengers (only for standard calls);
- β Some social media contacts (such as WhatsApp or Viber) may ignore individual settings.

Method 5: Advanced Settings through Engineering Mode (for experienced)
If you don't like standard methods, you can use Engineering Mode, a hidden menu for fine-tuning your phone, which is only suitable for advanced users, because doing the wrong thing can disrupt your device.
To get into Engineering Mode:
- Open the Phone app.
- Enter the combination: ##4636###.
- In the menu that opens, select Testing β Audio.
- Here you can test all system sounds, change their volume and even replace some of them manually (root rights are required).
Attention: Root-free modification of sounds through Engineering Mode is limited. To completely replace system tunes, you will need to unlock the bootloader and install custom firmware, which voids the warranty.
If you do decide to experiment, remember:
- π§ Without root rights, you can only listen to and test sounds, but not replace them;
- π¨ Incorrect settings in Engineering Mode can lead to failures in the speaker;
- π± All changes are reset after the update MIUI.
π‘
Engineering Mode is for diagnostics, not everyday use. Without special knowledge, it is better to stick to standard ways of changing ringtones.
Problem Solving: Why doesnβt the melody change?
Sometimes users find that new ringtones are not used or reset to standard ones.
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The melody doesn't change after the choice | Settings or Phone Cache is damaged | Clear the cache to Settings β Applications β App Management β Settings (or Phone) β Memory β Clear the cache |
| Added files are not displayed in the list | Wrong folder or file format | Check the path (/Ringtones/) and convert the file to.mp3 with a bitrate not higher than 192 kbps |
| The sound is interrupted or played with distortions | The file is too large or corrupted | Cut the tune to 20 to 30 seconds with Ringtone Maker |
| Personal contact ringtones do not work. | Contact synced with Google account where no such feature exists | Save the contact locally (in your phoneβs memory) or use MI Cloud to sync. |
If none of these methods helped, try resetting the sound settings to the standard:
- Go to Settings β System and device β Resetting.
- Select Resetting Sound Settings (not to be confused with a full reset!).
- Confirm the action and restart the phone.

Before resetting your audio settings, write down current contact melodies β they will be deleted!
