Are you tired of the standard ringtone that sounds the same for all incoming calls? Want to make a call melody from a loved one or colleague stand out? Xiaomi’s MIUI-enclosed smartphones have a built-in feature for assigning custom ringtone to your contacts — but not all users know how to use it correctly. In this article, we’ll look at all the possible ways to change the tune for a particular subscriber, including hidden settings and solutions to typical problems.
It is important to understand that the process may differ depending on the firmware version (MIUI 14, MIUI 15 or earlier) and the phone model (for example, Redmi Note 12, POCO X5 or Xiaomi 13T).We will look at the universal methods that work on most devices, and also point out the nuances for specific versions of the software. If you previously tried to change the ringtone, but nothing worked – chances are you missed one of the key steps, which we will discuss below.
Why can’t you change the melody of your contact to Xiaomi?
Many users find that the option of assigning a custom ringtone is simply not in the contact menu.
- 🔄 An outdated version MIUI — firmware MIUI 12 The settings interface is significantly different, and some features may be hidden.
- 📱 No contact editing rights – if the subscriber is synced to a Google Account or Mi Account, but without the right to change.
- 🛠️ Systemic limitations on some models (e.g, POCO M3) function disabled by the manufacturer.
- 🔊 Conflict with third-party applications – if alternative calls (such as Truecaller) or launchers are installed.
Before you get to the instructions, check the firmware version in the Settings menu → About Phone → MIUI version. If you have MIUI 14 or newer, follow the basic instructions. For older versions, we have prepared a separate section with alternative methods.
⚠️ Note: If the contact is saved SIM-card, you can not change the ringtone for it - transfer it to the phone memory or Google Contacts.
Method 1: Standard change via contact menu (MIUI 14/15)
This is the easiest and fastest method that works on most modern Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones with current firmware versions.
- Open the Contacts app** (a human silhouette icon).
- Find the contact you need in the list and tap it to open the card.
- In the upper right corner, press three dots (⋮) and select "Edit»**.
- Scroll down to the Call Melody block (or Rington in some localizations).
If you don't have a call melody on your menu, don't panic. It might be under a different name. MIUI For global markets, this option is called “Ring tone” or “Default ringtone”**. ⚙️ contact-card).

Method 2: Assigning a Melody through Call Settings
If the first method didn't work, try changing the ringtone through the system call settings, which is universal for all versions of MIUI and works even on older models:
- Open the “Settings”** of the phone (cog icon).
- Go to the Sound and Vibration section (or Sound & Vibration).
This method is especially useful if you want to massively assign different tunes to multiple contacts in a row, for example, you can single out unique ringtones to all family members or key customers. Note that in some versions of MIUI, the contact list in this menu does not appear immediately - it may take several seconds to download.
💡
If you call the same person often, assign them not only a unique melody, but also a vibrational signal, which will help identify the call even in silent mode, the setting is located in the same place, in the menu "Sound and vibration" → "Vibration on the call."
Method 3: Using third-party customization apps
If standard methods don't work or you don't like a limited selection of tunes, you can use third-party applications.
- 🎵 Zedge is a huge database of ringtones, notifications and wallpapers, and allows you to assign tunes to individual contacts directly from the app.
- 🔊 Ringtone Maker – a utility for creating your ringtones from any audio files (including songs from the player).
- 📱 Contacts+ — Alternative phone book with extended call settings and SMS.
To assign a tune through Zedge:
- Install the app from Google Play and open it.
- Select “Ringtones” from the menu** → find your favorite tune.
- Slip on it and select “Appoint” → “For Contact”.
Important: Once you install a third-party ringtone app, you may need to make it the default app for calls. Go to Settings → Apps → App Management → Calls and select the desired app.

How to Add Your Melody to Xiaomi’s Rington List
If you want to use your favorite song or any other audio file as a ringtone, you first need to add it to the system folder with ringtone.
- Connect your phone to your computer via USB or use a file manager on your phone (such as Mi File Explorer).
- Go to Internal Storage → Ringtones, and if you don't have one, create it manually.
- Copy the audio file in.mp3,.m4a or.ogg format (no larger than 5MB in size).
- Restart your phone (required!) to update the ringtones list.
- Now your file will be available in the standard menu of selection of tunes.
If the Ringtones folder doesn’t appear in the list when selecting a ringtone, try an alternative path:
- 📁 Create a media folder at the root of internal memory.
- Inside it, create subfolders audio → ringtones.
- 🔄 Put your file there and restart the device.
⚠️ Note: Not all audio files are suitable for ringtones: 🕒 Duration: 15-30 seconds (the system can cut long files). 🎵 Format: MP3 bitrate not higher than 192 kbit/s. 📛 File name: Latin characters and numbers only (without spaces and special characters).
| File format | Support for MIUI | Max size. | Recommendations |
|---|---|---|---|

| .ogg | ✅ Yes. | 3MB | Rarely used, problems are possible |
| .wav | ❌ No. | — | Not supported by the system |
| .flac | ❌ No. | — | Too big for a ringtone. |
Problem Solving: What to Do When the Melody Doesn't Change
Sometimes users find that after all the manipulations, the contact ringtone remains the same, and here are the most common reasons and ways to eliminate them:
- 🔄 Contacts cache** – clean it from the Settings menu → Annexes → Contacts → Warehouse → Clear the cache.
If the problem persists, try resetting the Contacts app settings** (not to be confused with a full phone reset!):
- Go to Settings → Applications → All Apps → Contacts.
- Click on “Storage” → “Reset settings”.
What if all the individual ringtones disappeared after resetting?
Features for different Xiaomi models
Despite the common MIUI platform, some Xiaomi models have unique nuances when assigning contact tunes.
| Model phone | Feature | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 10/11/12 | There is no “Call Melody” option in the contact card | Use the method through Settings → Sound and vibration → Call melody → For all contacts |
| POCO X3/X4/X5 | The "Contact" application may not be updated automatically | Update it manually via Google Play or clear the cache |
| Xiaomi 12/13/14 | The option is hidden under a long tap by contact | Keep your finger in contact for 2-3 seconds, then select "Edit" |
| Redmi 9/9A/9C | There is no way to add your ringtone. | Use the Internal Storage folder → MIUI → ringtone instead of the standard Ringtones |
For the POCO F3/F4/F5 and Xiaomi 11T models, you may need to turn off battery optimization for the Contacts app, otherwise the ringtone settings may be reset after the reboot.
