Xiaomi’s MIUI-based smartphones are known for their array of system sounds, from notifications to screen locks. It’s convenient for some users, and irritating for others, especially at night or in quiet rooms. Fortunately, the manufacturer has provided several ways to turn off the sounds, both completely and selectively for individual events.
In this article, we’ll look at all the possible methods, from basic menu settings to hidden features for power users. The instructions are relevant for all modern models — Xiaomi 13/14, Redmi Note 12/13, POCO F5/X5 and other devices on MIUI 14/15 (including global and Chinese versions of firmware), and pay special attention to turning off camera sound, a feature that many manufacturers hide due to legal restrictions in some countries.
1.Switch off all sounds through silent mode
The fastest way to shut down a smartphone is to activate silent mode, which turns off all notifications, calls and system signals, but leaves the media (music, video) and alarm clocks running.
How to turn on:
- 📱 Through the notification panel: swipe down from the top edge of the screen and tap the Sound icon (a speaker with a crossed bell).
- 🔕 Through Settings: Go to Settings → Sound and vibration → Sound modes and select "Silent».
- ⏰ Scheduled: in the same menu you can configure automatic switching on silent mode at night or during working hours.
Note that in silent mode, the default vibration remains active. To turn it off, go to Settings → Sound and Vibration → Vibration and deactivate the option “Vibration in silent mode”.
2. Selective shutdown of system sounds
If you only need to remove individual sounds (such as a screen lock signal or a photo sound), use the Other Sounds section in the settings, which allows you to point-to-point the sound without completely turning off the notifications.
Instructions:
- Open Settings → Sound and vibration → Other sounds.
- Scroll through the list and turn off the sliders opposite the unnecessary sounds: 🔒 «Locking sound" - clicking when the screen is turned off; 📷 «Shutter sound" - camera click (may be hidden on some models); 🔋 «Charging sound – signal when connected to the network; 📴 «Call Disconnection Sound" - a signal when resetting a call.

Why Xiaomi doesn’t let you turn off the camera sound?
If the desired sound is not on the list, check the settings of a particular application. For example, the sound of the Gboard keyboard turns off in its settings: Keyboard settings → Pressing sounds.
3. Disable notification sounds for individual applications
Social media, instant messengers, and games often bombard with notifications with sounds, and instead of turning off all sounds globally, you can customize your profiles for each application.
How to do this:
- Go to Settings → Applications → Application Management.
- Select the app you want (like WhatsApp or Instagram).
- Tap “Notifications” and turn off the “Sound” slider or select the “No Sound” melody.
- The MIUI 15 option is “Notification Categories” – you can turn off the sound only for chats, calls or other types of alerts.
| Annex | The path to sound settings | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Telegram | Chat settings → Notifications → Sound | You can turn off the sound for specific chats |
| Settings → Notifications → Sound of notifications | The sound is only turned off for mobile alerts | |
| Gmail | Settings → Account → Notifications → Sound | Separate settings for letters and chats |
| Games (PUBG, Genshin Impact) | Game settings → Sound → Notifications | Sound is often tied to system settings |
Tip: If notifications continue to sound, check if priority mode is on in the audio settings. It can ignore the individual application settings.
4.Switching off camera sound (including hidden techniques)
The camera shutter sound is one of the most controversial features on Xiaomi, and in some countries, shutting it down is blocked at the firmware level, but there are workarounds.
Method 1: Through camera settings (if available)
- 📸 Open the Camera app.
- Slap the icon. ⚙️ (setting) → «Shutter sound» → select "No sound».
Method 2: ADB (for experienced users)
If the option is hidden, use the ADB command:
adb shell settings put global camera_shutter_sound_enabled 0Once done, restart your smartphone. To get the sound back, replace 0 with 1.
💡
Before using ADB, make sure that USB debugging is enabled on your smartphone (Settings → About Phone → MIUI Version → 7 times tap on version → return to Additional Settings → For developers).

Method 3: Installation of an alternative camera
Apps like Open Camera or Google Camera let you turn off the shutter sound in your settings, even if the system camera can’t. Download them from Google Play or APKMirror (for models without Google services).
⚠️ Warning: Turning off the camera sound may violate local privacy laws, and in some countries (e.g. Japan) it is punishable by a fine.
5. Disabling sounds in games and media players
Games and videos often play sounds on top of system settings, and to manage them, you need to use Do Not Disturb modes or customize specific applications.
For games:
- 🎮 Turn on the settings. → Sound and vibration → Don't disturb. → Rules and add the game to the exclusion list with the sound turned off.
- 🔇 In the settings of the game itself (for example, PUBG Mobile or Genshin Impact: Turn off notification sounds or reduce the volume of effects.
For media players:
- 🎵 In Google Play Music or Mi Music, turn off the Control Sounds option in the settings.
- 📺 In YouTube or Netflix, the sound is controlled by the volume slider on the video itself (regardless of system settings).
If the sound in the game or video is completely gone, check if the mono mode is activated in the special features settings (Settings → Special features → Sound → Monoaudio).
6.Switching off sounds via Do Not Disturb modes and schedule
Xiaomi’s Do Not Disturb (DND) feature is flexible: you can turn off all sounds or leave only important notifications (such as alarm clocks or calls from favorite contacts).
How to set up:
- Go to Settings → Sound and vibration → Do not disturb.
- Choose one of the modes: 🚫 All the sounds are total silence; 🔔 Only alarm clocks sound alarm clocks; 📞 Priority – only selected contacts and reminders sound.

Important: Do Not Disturb, the vibration is turned off by default. To return it, go to Settings → Special Options → Vibration → Do Not Disturb Vibration.
💡
Do Not Disturb mode does not affect media players – music and videos will sound normally unless the volume is manually reduced.
7. Resetting sound settings to factory
If after experimenting with sounds, the smartphone began to behave strangely (for example, all melodies are lost or sounds are played with distortions), resetting sound parameters will help.
How to reset:
- Open the Settings. → Sound and vibration.
- Slip on the three points in the upper right corner (or "Additional").
- Select “Reset the sound settings” and confirm the action.
This will return all system sounds to factory values, but it will not affect:
- 🎵 Custom call melodies (if they were uploaded to the phone's memory);
- 🔕 Settings silent mode and "Do not disturb»;
- 📱 Individual audio settings for applications (they will have to be reconfigured).
⚠️ Attention: resetting the audio settings does not affect problems with the speakers or microphone. If the sound is distorted or absent completely, check the settings. → The phone. → Diagnostics → Sound test or contact the service center.
