Xiaomi Redmi 4 remains a popular smartphone among users who value the balance of price and functionality. However, over time, the intrusive sounds of notifications from messengers, social networks or system alerts can become annoying. Unlike modern models, where the audio settings are brought to the fore, in MIUI 8/9 (the main versions for Redmi 4), the path to silence is not always obvious.
This article covers all possible scenarios, from complete audio blackout to selective notification management for specific applications. We took into account the features of the firmware Global Stable, China Stable and custom builds, as well as the nuances of working with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and Android 7.0 Nougat, which released Redmi 4. If you are tired of constant squeak, read on.
Why are the Redmi 4βs notifications so loud?
The problem with intrusive sounds on Xiaomi Redmi 4 is often related to the MIUI architecture. Unlike the βbareβ Android, there are three layers of sound settings:
- π System sounds β signals about charging, connecting devices, errors.
- π± The sounds of notifications of applications β messengers, social networks, mail.
- π΅ Media and alarm clocks β music, videos, timers (do not depend on the βNo Soundβ modeΒ»).
In addition, Redmi 4 activates Priority Notifications by default, which ignores the general silence settings for βimportantβ alerts (calls, SMS, some system events), which leads to a situation where the user turns off the sound, but the smartphone still emits signals.
Important: Redmi 4 with MIUI 8 doesn't have a separate volume control for notifications, it's tied to the volume of the call, which means that by reducing the volume of the call, you automatically lower the volume of the alerts.
Method 1: Completely shutting down the sound through the control panel
The fastest method is to use the notification bar. It works on all versions of MIUI for Redmi 4, but has a limitation: it turns off all sounds, including alarm clocks and media.
- Swipe your finger down to open the notification panel.
- Find the βSoundβ icon (a speaker with waves) and tap it.
- Select No Sound mode (Displayer icon with crossed circle).
β οΈ Warning: In this mode, Redmi 4 will not make any sounds, including calls. To return the sound, repeat the steps and select Sound or Vibration.

If the Sound icon is missing from the panel, click Edit (pencil in the upper right corner) and add it to the active elements.
Method 2: Configure notification sounds in the βSoundsβ menu
To selectively turn off sounds (for example, leave calls but remove notifications), go to the basic settings:
- Open the Settings. β Sounds and vibrations.
- In the Notifications section, click the Notification Sound.
- Choose No Sound or set the volume slider to a minimum.
On the Redmi 4 with MIUI 8, you can:
- π Change the sound pattern (e.g., to βQuietΒ»).
- π Turn off vibrations at notifications.
- π΄ Set a quiet schedule (useful at night).
What if there is no βNotification Soundβ item?
| MIUI version | The path to sound settings | Features |
|---|---|---|
| MIUI 8 (Android 6.0) | Settings β Sounds and vibrations β Notifications | There is no separate regulator for notifications β tied to a call. |
| MIUI 9 (Android 7.0) | Settings β Sound β Sound of notifications | A notification volume slider appeared, but depends on the firmware. |
| Castom firmware (LineageOS, etc.) | Settings β Sound β Notifications | There may be additional options, such as βDo Not Disturbβ. |
Method 3: Turning off sound for individual applications
If you are annoyed by notifications from a specific messenger (such as WhatsApp or VK), they can be turned off selectively:
- Go to Settings β Applications.
- Select the appropriate app (such as Facebook).
- Press Notifications.
- Turn off the Sound switch or set priority to Low.
For system applications (e.g., Weather or Security), the path may be different:
- π Settings β All settings β Notifications and status bar.
- π§ Select the app from the list and turn off the sound.
Make sure the app doesnβt use sounds for important alerts (e.g. Skype calls)| Check if there are duplicate notifications from the same service (e.g. Gmail email and MIUI email client)|Save settings before you exit β some apps reset them after you update.

Method 4: Do Not Disturb (DND) Mode on Redmi 4
The Do Not Disturb feature allows you to flexibly manage notifications by time or event. On Redmi 4, it is hidden in the back of the menu:
- Open Settings β Sounds and vibrations β Do not disturb.
- Activate the "Enable" switch.
- Set up the rules: π Scheduled (for example, from 23:00 to 7:00). π΅ Exceptions (allow calls from selected contacts). π Priority notifications (e.g. alarm clocks).
β οΈ Attention: Redmi 4s MIUI 8th regime DND It can block all sounds, including alarm clocks, unless you have exceptions set up!
Every night |Only on important occasions (meetings, movies) |Never used |I don't know what it is-->
Method 5: Manually disable audio through the file system (for advanced)
If standard methods donβt work (e.g., custom firmware), you can manually remove or replace the system notification sounds, which requires root rights and backup!
Instructions:
- Install a file manager with root support (such as Root Explorer).
- Go to /system/media/audio/notifications.
- Copy the original files (for example, Mi_Tone.ogg) backup.
- Remove or replace them with empty files (you can create an empty silent.mp3).
- Reset the device.
