Every smartphone user faces a situation where loud clicking at every click of a letter becomes unbearable. Especially annoying sound in quiet places, in meetings, in the cinema or when loved ones are sleeping nearby. Xiaomi device owners often wonder how to remove this intrusive noise without completely turning off the sound throughout the system.
The problem is that the sound settings on Redmi and Poco smartphones are divided into many subcategories. The standard side menu volume slider often doesn’t affect the volume of the keyboard, leaving the user confused. In this article, we’ll go into detail about all the possible ways to turn off the keyboard sound, including system settings, the settings of the MIUI shell or HyperOS, and the settings inside popular text input applications.
You no longer have to search for the right switchboard at random, going through hundreds of menus, we have prepared step-by-step instructions that will help you set the device as comfortable as possible, learn how to manage audio profiles and enjoy the silence when printing messages or searching for information on the Internet.
System settings of sound and vibration in MIUI
The first and most obvious step, often overlooked, is deep operating system settings. In Xiaomi's shell, a separate section is responsible for sound effects, which is not always synchronized with the overall volume of the media. To find this switch, you need to go to the main settings menu and select Sound and Vibration.
In the settings list that opens, you scroll down to the Advanced Settings section, and that's where the subtle system sounds are hidden. Find the option of Keyboard Sound or Screen Lock Sound. If the slider opposite this one is on blue or green, it means the function is active. To turn off, just press the switch to turn gray.
However, depending on the firmware version, the path may be slightly different. In newer versions of HyperOS, this option is sometimes hidden in the submenu of Sounds and tactile recoil. If you don't see the right item at once, carefully examine all the tabs in the audio section. Sometimes manufacturers combine vibration and sound settings into one logical unit for convenience.
- 🔊 Open Settings and go to Sound and Vibration».
- 🔍 Find the subsection “Additional settings” or “Sounds and tactile recoil».
- 🚫 Transfer the keyboard sound switch to the inactive position.
- ✅ Check the result by opening any application to enter text.
⚠️ Note: Some global versions of Xiaomi firmware may not have this system switch, in which case the sound control is completely transferred to the settings of the keyboard application itself, which we will discuss in the next sections.
Setting up the built-in Gboard keyboard
The vast majority of Xiaomi smartphones use Google’s Gboard keyboard by default. This powerful app has its own audio settings that take precedence over system settings in some scenarios. There are two ways to get into the Gboard settings menu: through system settings or directly from the text input field.
The fastest way is to call the keyboard in any application, such as in messages or search engines. On the top toolbar, find the gear icon. If it's not there, click on the three-dot icon or emoji until you see the settings menu. In the window that opens, select Settings, and then go to Preferences.
Inside the Preferences section, you'll find a lot of switches that control how the keyboard behaves. We're interested in Sound when you press the keys. Move the slider to the "Off" position. You can also set the vibration when you press it if the sound is okay, but the tactile response seems unnecessary.
The path to Gboard settings:
1. Open any application with an input field.
2.Click on the gear icon on the keyboard panel.
3. Select "Preferences".
4. Turn off "Push Sound."It’s worth noting that an app update can reset some settings or change the interface. If you’ve updated Gboard through Google Play but the sound hasn’t gone, try clearing the app’s cache. Go to Settings → Apps → All Apps → Gboard → Memory → Clear the cache. This won’t delete your dictionaries, but will update the configuration files.
Sound control on the Sogou keyboard and other third-party
On Chinese versions of smartphones or when manually installed, the Sogou keyboard is common. It is known for its themes and features, but also produces characteristic sounds when printed. The settings interface here is different from the standard Android. To enter the settings, you need to find the Sogou logo icon on the toolbar or pinch the space.
From the Sogou keyboard menu, select Settings (cog icon). Go to Sound and Vibration or Sound & Vibration. Here you will see volume sliders for different actions: pressing keys, switching languages, completing a sentence. Reduce key volume to a minimum or turn off the option completely.
If you use other popular keyboards, such as SwiftKey or Yandex Keyboard, the logic remains the same. Look for sections in the app settings that say “Sound”, “Audio”, “Sound” or “Feedback”. In Yandex.Keyboard, for example, you need to go to Settings → Appearance and Sounds → Sound when you press.
| keyboard | The path to settings | Option name | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gboard | A gear. → Preferences | Pressed sound | Low. |
| Sogou | Logo → Settings → Sound | Keyboard volume | Medium |
| SwiftKey | Menus. → Sounds and vibrations | Pressing sound | Low. |
| Yandex | Settings → Appearance | Pressed sound | Low. |
