Why keyboard vibration is annoying and how to turn it off
Tactile feedback when typing is a feature that is not popular with everyone. For some users of Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO, the slight vibration of the keys creates the illusion of "pressing" a physical keyboard, for others it becomes a source of constant irritation, especially in quiet rooms, where the sound of a vibrating motor can distract others.
Compounding the problem, different versions of MIUI and the new HyperOS may have different paths to vibration settings, and some keyboards (such as Gboard or SwiftKey) have their own vibration options that are independent of system settings. In this article, we will look at all possible ways to turn off vibration, from standard to hidden.
It's important to understand that typing vibration and tap feedback are different functions. Turning off one doesn't always affect the other. If you only need to remove the key vibration, follow the instructions below.
Method 1: Turn off vibration in the MIUI keyboard settings
The most obvious method is to use the built-in settings of Xiaomiβs system keyboard, which works on most devices with MIUI 12, 13, 14 and HyperOS, but may vary slightly depending on the model.
To turn off the vibration:
- Open any application where the keyboard appears (such as Messages or Notes).
- Touch the gear badge (βοΈ) on the keyboard to open its settings.
- Go to the section Settings of the keyboard β Vibration when pressed (or Tactile feedback).
- Move the slider to the off position.
If you have a Google keyboard installed, the path will be different:
- π± Open the Settings. β System system β Language and input β Virtual keyboard β Gboard.
- π§ Select Settings β Sound and vibration.
- π Turn off the Vibration option when you press the keys.

If after turning off the vibration still works, try to restart the smartphone β sometimes the settings are applied only after the reboot.
Method 2: Global disabling of tactile feedback in MIUI
If the keyboard doesn't vibrate through its settings, it may be a problem with system settings. MIUI and HyperOS have a separate section for managing haptic feedback that affects all interface elements, including the keyboard.
Instructions for MIUI 14 / HyperOS:
- Go to Settings. β Sound and vibration.
- Choose Vibration and Tactile Feedback.
- Turn off the vibration slider when touching.
- To completely disable also deactivate Vibration when typing (if there is such a paragraph).
On older versions of MIUI 12/13, the path can look like this:
Settings β Sound and vibration β Other settings β Vibration when touchedWhat to do if there is no item "Vibration when typing"?
β οΈ Attention: Global haptic feedback shutdown will block vibration not only for the keyboard, but also for other interface elements (for example, when you press buttons in the menu.
Method 3: Use Do Not Disturb Mode to Temporarily Shut Down
If the keyboard vibration only interferes in certain situations (e.g. at night or at important meetings), you can use Do Not Disturb mode, which allows you to turn off all vibrations, including the keyboard, for a specified period of time.
How to set up:
- π Go to Settings. β Notifications and status bar β Don't disturb.
- π Select a schedule or activate the mode manually.
- π In the mode settings, turn off the vibration.
- β³ Set a timer or leave the mode on until manually switched off.
This method is useful if you need to temporarily remove the vibration without changing the system settings, but it turns off all vibrations, including notifications of calls and messages.
Problems and Solutions: Why the Vibration Doesn't Turn Off
Sometimes, even after all the instructions are done, the keyboard vibration continues to work, and there are several reasons why:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Vibration remains after disconnection in settings | Keyboard cache or system data conflict | Clear keyboard cache in Settings β Applications β Application Management β Keyboard β Storage β Clear cache |
| There is no "Vibration" in the keyboard settings | Third-party keyboard without vibration support | Install Gboard or go back to the standard MIUI keyboard |
| Vibration only works in some applications | The application has its own keyboard settings | Check the vibration settings inside the problem app (for example, WhatsApp or Telegram) |
| After the MIUI update, the vibration returned. | Resetting settings after update | Repeat the vibration shutdown according to the instructions above |
If none of these things worked, it may be the firmware that's the problem, and some custom MIUI builds (e.g. xiaomi.eu or MIUI Pro) may not have the vibration settings working properly, so resetting to factory settings or reflashing to the official version will help.

Before resetting your settings, be sure to back up your data via Settings β About Phone β Backup!
Additional settings: fine tuning of vibration
Not all users need to turn off the vibration completely β sometimes itβs enough to reduce the intensity or change the duration. MIUI 14 and HyperOS have hidden settings that allow you to fine-tune tactile feedback.
How to change the vibration force:
- Activate Developer Mode (if not already activated): Settings β About Phone β MIUI Version (click 7 times)
- Back to Settings β Additionally. β For developers.
- Find the Vibration Intensity and select the appropriate level (weak to strong).
Some models (such as the Xiaomi 13 Pro or Redmi Note 12) also have a vibration duration setting that allows you to shorten the vibration, keeping it tactile but reducing irritation.

Alternative solutions: third-party keyboards and applications
If Xiaomiβs built-in settings donβt work, you can use third-party keyboards with flexible vibration settings.
- π± Gboard (Google) - allows you to turn off the vibration completely or adjust its intensity. Supports themes and gestures.
- π¨ SwiftKey (Microsoft) β has separate settings for sound and vibration, as well as adaptive input.
- β‘ Fleksy β Minimalist keyboard with advanced feedback settings.
- π AnySoftKeyboard β open source project with support for vibration customization.
To install a third-party keyboard:
- Download the app from Google Play.
- Go to Settings β System β Language and input β Virtual keyboard.
- Activate the new keyboard and set it by default.
- Set the vibration in the keyboard menu (usually the icon) βοΈ toolbar).
β οΈ Note: Some third-party keyboards may collect your input. Before installing, check the app's permissions in Google Play and user reviews. For maximum privacy, use open source keyboards such as AnySoftKeyboard.
