Notifications on Xiaomi can be both a rescue and a source of annoyance, depending on how you set up their audio. Too loud a signal wakes up at night, and quiet a signal causes you to miss important messages. In this article, we will examine all the ways to customize the sound of notifications, from changing the standard melody to separate settings for each messenger and system alerts.
The MIUI firmware feature (including versions 14 and 15) is flexibility of settings, but not always an obvious interface. We will show where the options for changing volume, selecting tunes, turning off vibrations and even creating unique audio profiles for different applications are hidden, and we will also reveal some hidden MIUI features that are not written about in the official guides - for example, how to assign your own tune to notifications from a particular contact on WhatsApp or Telegram.
Where to find notification sound settings on Xiaomi
The basic audio settings are hidden in the Settings β Sound and Vibration menu, but there are pitfalls: depending on the model (Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Xiaomi 13T) and the MIUI version, the location of the items may differ, for example, on older devices (before MIUI 12), the section was simply called βSoundβ.
To avoid confusion, follow the universal path:
- Open the settings (cog icon on the desktop).
- Scroll down to the Device block and select Sound and Vibration.
- Slip on Default Notifications β Global settings for all alerts are regulated here.
π‘
On some models (e.g. POCO F5), the path may be different: Settings β Notifications and Status bar β Notification sounds. If you donβt find a section, search by settings (the magnifier in the upper right corner).
On this menu you will see:
- π Melody of notification β Selecting a standard signal.
- π’ Volume β a slider for adjustment (not to be confused with the volume of the call!).
- π³ Vibration β Enabling/disabling response when notified.
- π΅ System notification sounds β a separate setting for alerts from MIUI (Update, security, etc.).
How to change the melody of notifications: standard and custom sounds
Standard tunes in Xiaomi are quickly boring, especially if you hear them 50 times a day. Fortunately, MIUI allows you to install any audio files in.mp3,.wav or.ogg format for up to 30 seconds.
Method 1: Selection from standard tunes
- Go to Settings β Sound and Vibration β Default Notifications.
- Slap on the melody of the notification.
- Choose one of the options (e.g. Bamboo, Reflection, or MIUI).
- Press OK to save.
Method 2: Set up your own tune
If you want to use your own music:
- Place the audio file in the Ringtones or Notifications folder on the internal drive (create it manually if not).
- Follow the steps from Method 1, but in the list of tunes, select Add a melody.
- Find your file in the Explorer and confirm the choice.
Why isnβt my song on the list?
Important: on some models (Redmi 10, POCO M4 Pro) custom tunes may not play due to the limitations of MIUI. In this case, a third-party application like Zedge (available on Google Play) will help.
Separate sound setting for applications
MIUI allows you to assign unique sounds to each instant messenger or game, which is useful if you want to distinguish WhatsApp messages from Gmail emails or alerts from VK. Here's how to set it up:
- Open Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Select the application you want (such as Telegram).
- Slap the Notice.
- Turn on the Allow Notifications switch (if switched off).
- Select the notification category (e.g., βMessagesβ for Telegram).
- Slip on the sound and choose a tune.
- Open Settings β Applications β WhatsApp
- Go to the Notifications section
- Select the category βCommunicationsβ
- Press "Sound" and select a tune.
- Save the changes-->
For MIUI 15, you can create notification profiles, like "Work" (silent sounds) and "Home" (loud) to activate them:
- Go to Settings β Sound and vibration β Sound profiles.
- Select or create a new profile.
- Set the notification volume and vibration separately for each occasion.
π‘
In MIUI 15, notification profiles are synchronized with Do Not Disturb and Sleep modes, allowing you to automatically switch sounds on a schedule.
Volume control: why notifications are too quiet or loud
A common problem with Xiaomi users is that notifications and calls are not volume-consistent, and even if you've turned the slider to the maximum, the signal can be barely heard, and the reason for this is the separate adjustment of media and notifications in MIUI.
To correct:
- Open the Settings. β Sound and vibration.
- Click on Volume (or Volume Levels in older versions).
- Make sure that the Notice slider is at the right level (not to be confused with Media or Call!).
- Activate the option to Enable the volume of notifications and calls if you want to manage them together.
π‘
If notifications suddenly become quieter after the MIUI update, reset the sound settings: Settings β Sound and vibration β Reset the sound settings.
Some devices (Xiaomi 12, Redmi K50) have a hidden Volume Amplifier option that increases the maximum sound level to enable it:
Settings β Special features β Sound amplifier β Enableβ οΈ Attention: POCO F4 Redmi Note 11 may cause distortion of sound at maximum volume when activated.
Turning off vibrations at notifications
Vibration is useful in public places, but it is annoying at night or when the phone is on the table, and in MIUI it can be turned off completely or customized to specific scenarios.
Methods of shutdown:
- π± Global Shutdown: Settings β Sound and vibration β Vibration at notifications (switch to off position.Β»).
- π For individual applications: in the app notification settings (see section above) disable the Vibration option.
- π Schedule: Use Do Not Disturb with Vibration setting β Off. overnight.
MIUI 14/15 has a new option called Intelligent Vibration, which analyzes the notification type and selects the vibration pattern to adjust it:
- Go to Settings β Sound and vibration β Vibration.
- Choose the Intelligent Vibration.
- Activate the switch and adjust the sensitivity.
β οΈ Note: Xiaomi 13 Pro and Redmi K60 Intelligent vibration may conflict with some messengers (for example, Viber). If the vibration disappears, turn off this option.
Problems with the sound of notifications and their solutions
If notifications have stopped playing or sound incorrect, check these points:
