Why are Xiaomi’s standard tunes not good for users?
Xiaomi’s MIUI-based smartphones offer dozens of built-in ringtones for calls, but many users want to personalize the audio. The reasons range from wanting to stand out in the crowd to having to set a unique signal for important contacts. However, not everyone knows how to properly add their tune from the Download folder – especially if the file is non-standard or weighs more than 5 MB.
In this article, we will discuss three proven methods of installing custom tunes on Redmi, POCO, Black Shark and other Xiaomi devices, including bypassing common errors such as “file not supported” or “melody not displayed in the list.” All instructions are relevant for MIUI 12-14 and newer versions, and also take into account the features of firmware for the global and Chinese markets.
Before you go to settings, make sure your audio file meets the key requirements:
- 🎵 Format:.mp3,.m4a,.ogg or.wav (preferably) MP3 bitrate).
- ⏱️ Duration: up to 30 seconds (the system can cut long tracks automatically).
- 📏 Size: No more than 5 MB (in some versions) MIUI limit - 10MB).
- 🔊 Volume: The file must be normalized (without sharp volume surges).

Method 1: Installation via the standard Settings menu (MIUI 12–14)
This is the easiest method that works on most Xiaomi devices without any additional applications, but it has a limitation: the file must be in one of the system folders (Ringtones, Notifications or Music). The download folder is not scanned by the system for melodies by default, so it will have to be temporarily “cheated”.
Here's the step-by-step instruction:
- Move the file from Download to the Music folder (or Ringtones, if any).
- Update the media library:
Set the tune.
- ⚙️ Go to Settings. → Sound and vibration → The ringing melody.
- 🔍 In the list, select the tab “Local” (or “My tunes»).
- 🎵 Find your file and click on it.
Check the file format (MP3/M4A/OGG)✅
Cut the track for up to 30 seconds (if necessary)✅
Move the file to the Music or Ringtones folder✅
Reboot your phone to update your media library✅-->
Why can't the melody show up? If the file doesn't appear in the list, check:
- 🚫 The file name does not contain any special characters (e.g., #, %, Cyrillic in Latin).
- 🔇 File is not hidden (in File Manager, enable the display of hidden files in the menu) ⋮ → Settings).
- 📱 The Music folder is in the root directory of internal memory, not on the back of the folder. SD-map.
💡
If you don't have a Ringtones folder, create it manually: open File Manager, press + in the lower right corner, and select Folder. Call it Ringtones (registration is important!).
Method 2: Use the Melodies app (Zedge or Ringdroid)
If the standard method didn’t work (for example, due to MIUI’s limitations on file formats), third-party apps will come to the rescue. The most reliable options are Zedge and Ringdroid. The first offers millions of ready-made tunes, and the second allows you to crop and convert your tracks directly on your phone.
Instructions for Zedge:
- 📥 Install Zedge from Google Play.
- 🔍 In the section "Calling Melodies" find your favorite track or click "My files» → Select your file from Download.
- 🎵 Press "Install» → Choose "Calling Melody».
- ✅ Confirm your choice in the system window.
Instructions for Ringdroid (for pruning and conversion):
- 📥 Install Ringdroid.
- 🎵 Open the application, select “Download” and find the file in Downloads.
- ✂️ Cut the track (pull the sliders on the timeline) and click Save».
- 📲 Select "Set as a ringtone».
What if Zedge doesn’t see files in Downloads?
Important: Some versions of MIUI block the installation of tunes from third-party applications through the system window, in which case use Method 3 (manual copying to the system folder).
Method 3: Manually copy to system folder (for power users)
This method requires access to hidden folders of the system and is suitable for users who are ready to work with the file structure of Android. → Sound without additional applications.
You'll need:
- 📱 File Manager with root access (e.g. Solid Explorer or Solid Explorer) FX File Explorer).
- 🔧 Developer mode enabled (if you need access to system folders).
Step-by-step:
- 📁 Open the file manager and go on the way: /storage/emulated/0/ Here are all the user folders.
- 🔍 Find or create a media folder (if it doesn't exist) and it should have subfolders inside: media/audio/ringtones media/audio/notifications media/audio/alarms If they don’t, create them manually.
- 📎 Copy your audio file from Download to media/audio/ringtones.
- 🔄 Reboot the phone.
- ⚙️ Go to Settings. → Sound and vibration → Call melody and select your file.
💡
Files in the media/audio/ringtones folder are available in the system menu of tunes forever - even after resetting the settings (if not formatting the memory).
Warning of access rights:
⚠️ Note: on some devices (e.g. Xiaomi) 12T pro POCO F5) folder /media/audio If the file manager doesn't let you copy files, use it. ADB-Teams: Adb push /sdcard/Download/your_ringtone.mp3 /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones/ To do this, connect the phone to a PC with installed ADB Tools.
