The sound of notifications on Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO smartphones can be a real problem โ especially when messages come in at night, during important meetings or just annoying with their intrusiveness. Fortunately, MIUI offers several ways to turn off the audible accompaniment of notifications, while preserving vibration or light indication. But not all users know exactly where these settings are hiding โ especially after updates to MIUI 14/15 or Android 13/14, where the interface has again undergone changes.
In this article, weโll look at 5 proven ways to turn off notifications, from basic settings in the audio menu to hidden features for individual applications. Youโll learn how to do it globally for all notifications or selectively for instant messengers, social networks and system alerts. And also tell you what to do if the sound returns after a reboot is a common problem on some models, for example, the Redmi Note 12 or POCO X5 Pro.
Before you start, check your firmware version: Setting path โ About phone โ MIUI version. That depends on which menu items you need to look for. Ready? Then let's get started!
1. Globally disable notification sound in MIUI settings
The fastest way to remove the sound for all notifications is to use standard audio settings, which works on all Xiaomi models, regardless of MIUI or Android.
Open the Settings menu โ Sound and vibration. So here you're interested in two key parameters:
- ๐ Do Not Disturb โ allows you to temporarily turn off all sounds (including alarm clocks, unless you set exceptions).
- ๐ณ The sound of notifications โ here you can set the silence or select the melody โWithout sound".
- ๐ Vibration at notifications โ if you want to leave tactile recoil.
Note that in some firmware, the Notification Sound may be called Alert Sound or Notification Melody. If you don't see the No Sound option, try selecting any tune, and then go back to that menu - sometimes the list is updated with a delay.
๐ก
If notifications still sound after turning off the sound, check the settings of individual applications (such as WhatsApp or Telegram) - they may ignore global settings.
2.Switching off sound for individual applications
Often users want to remove the sound only for specific messengers or social networks, leaving alerts from other applications, for example, to turn off the sound in VK or Instagram, but save it for WhatsApp.
This can be done in two ways:
- Through the application settings: ๐ฑ Open the Settings. โ Annexes โ Application management. ๐ Find the right application (for example, Telegram) and tap it. ๐ Select Notifications โ Turn off the Sound switch or set the priority "Low".
- Through the notification panel: ๐ฒ When you receive a notice, swipe it to the left (not delete it!). ๐ง Press the gear "Settings" โ Turn off the sound.
Important: Some apps (like Facebook or TikTok) have their own notification settings inside themselves, and they should be checked in the app menu, as they can overlap system settings.
Why does the sound come back after the reboot?
3.Use of the "Do Not Disturb" mode
Do Not Disturb (DND) is a universal tool for managing notifications, which allows you not only to turn off the sound, but also to set exceptions for important contacts or alarms.
How to turn on:
- Go to Settings โ Sound and vibration โ Do not disturb.
- Activate the switch at the top of the screen.
- Set up the rules: ๐ According to the schedule - for example, from 23:00 to 7:00. ๐ต Exceptions โ Allow calls from selected contacts. ๐ Type of notifications โ you can leave vibration or LED.
MIUI 14/15 has an option to enable events automatically, such as when connecting to a Bluetooth device (useful for automotive systems), and you can create multiple DND profiles for different situations.
| MIUI version | The way to "Do Not Disturb" | Features |
|---|---|---|
| MIUI 12 and below | Settings โ Sound โ Do not disturb | There are no flexible schedules, only manual activation. |
| MIUI 13 | Settings โ Sound and vibration โ Do not disturb | There are exceptions for communications from the elected. |
| MIUI 14/15 | Settings โ Sound and vibration โ Focus modes | Integration with Digital Well-being, automatic event-based inclusion. |
4.Switch off sound through the Quick Settings panel
If you want to quickly turn off notifications without digging into the menu, use the Quick Settings Panel. Swipe down from the top edge of the screen to open it.
Next:
- ๐ Find the Sound icon (usually second on the left).
- ๐ Slip it to switch to Vibration or No Sound mode.
- ๐ If there is no icon, click on the โEditโ pencil and add it to the panel.
Note that this method turns off all sounds (including media, games, and calls) not just notifications. If you need a selective shutdown, use the methods in the previous sections.
Swipe down twice for full panel |Find the "Sound" icon (Dynamic) |Tap until the crossed speaker appears |Check that the calls are not off (if necessary) |Return the sound the same way-->
5. Resetting the sound settings to factory
If the notifications persist after a shutdown or behave unpredictably (for example, only sounds for some applications), resetting the audio settings will help, returning all parameters to factory settings, but not affecting personal data.
Instructions:
- Open Settings โ System and device โ Additional โ Resetting.
- Select Reset sound settings (on some models this item is called Reset all settings - then the sound will reset along with other parameters).
- Confirm the action and restart the phone.
โ ๏ธ Attention: POCO F4 Xiaomi 12 Lite may lose the sound in the headphones after reset. To return it, reconnect the Bluetooth device or clear the cache of the Bluetooth application in the settings.
If the reset didnโt help, the problem could be in the firmware: Update MIUI to the latest version or perform a full reset (with saving data to your computer!).
๐ก
Resetting sound is a last resort. Before you do that, try clearing the Settings app cache (in the app menu) and restarting your phone.
6. Hidden settings for power users (ADB)
For those who are willing to go beyond standard settings, there is a way to turn off notifications via ADB (Android Debug Bridge) if system methods donโt work or you need to turn off the sound for system notifications (for example, updates).
You'll need:
- ๐ฅ๏ธ Computer with installed ADB-driver.
- ๐ฑ Included Debugging by USB on the phone (Settings) โ The phone. โ Version. MIUI โ 7 times tap the assembly number โ Come back to the extra. โ For developers).
- ๐ USB-cable (preferably original).
Commands to turn off the notification sound:
adb shell settings put global zen_mode 1 # Includes Do Not Disturb mode
adb shell settings put global notification_sound' # Removes notification sound
adb shell settings put global volume_alarm 0 # Turns off the alarm clock (optional)To bring back the sound:
adb shell settings put global zen_mode 0
adb shell settings delete global notification_soundโ ๏ธ Attention: Misuse of the right ADB On models with a locked bootloader (for example, Xiaomi 13 Pro for the European market), these commands may not work without unlocking.
