Smartphone ringing is your calling card. Xiaomi's standard tunes get boring quickly, and a poorly chosen ringtone can be embarrassing in a public place. Fortunately, MIUI offers flexible audio settings, but not everyone knows how to use them. In this article, we will discuss not only the basic ways to change calls, but also the hidden features of the system, and also bypass typical limitations (for example, why some tunes are not displayed in the list).
Itβs important to understand that the process differs depending on the version of MIUI (12/13/14) and the smartphone model. On the Redmi Note 12, the path to settings may differ from the POCO F5, and on the flagships of the Mi 14 series, additional options are available. We have taken into account all the nuances and prepared a universal guide that will suit even older devices on MIUI 11. If you want to install a custom melody (for example, a segment from a song or a recorded voice), here too, you will find a solution β without having to install questionable applications.
1. Standard method: through MIUI settings
The most obvious method is to use the built-in tools of the system. It works on all Xiaomi smartphones, regardless of the model and firmware version. The main advantage is that it does not require the rights of a superuser (root) or third-party software.
Open the Settings app (the gear icon on your desktop). Next, go to the Sounds and Vibrations section. In some versions of MIUI (like the POCO X3 Pro), this item may be called Sound or Sound and Vibration. Scroll down to the Bellbox and tap it. Here you will see a list of standard tunes grouped by categories: Classic, MIUI, Downloaded.
- π To listen to the melody, click on it β playback will begin automatically.
- β To select, tap the tick to the right of the name.
- π If you want to return a standard call, select the default Sound.
- π± On some models (e.g. Redmi) 10C) You can also set the vibration when you call.
Note that MIUI 14 has introduced Adaptive Sounds, which automatically adjusts the volume of the call to the surrounding environment. If this option is active, some tunes may sound quieter than usual. To turn it off, go to Settings β Sounds and Vibrations β Adaptive Sounds and move the slider to the left.
2. How to set your tune (mp3-file) as a bell
If you don't like the built-in ringtones, you can download your own music. MIUI supports.mp3,.m4a,.wav and.ogg formats, but there are limits on duration (optimally up to 30 seconds) and file size (up to 5 MB).
First, prepare an audio file. If it's too long, trim it with apps like Ringtone Maker or MP3 Copy the file to the phoneβs memory (internal or on-board) SD-Then open any file manager (e.g. Mi File Manager) and find your audio file. 2-3 Then select the menu to set how β If this item is missing, move the file to the Ringtones folder (create it at the root of internal memory if it is not available).
Cut the track to 30 seconds
Convert to MP3 format (bitrate 128-192 kbit / s)
Rename the file in Latin (without spaces)
Put it in the Ringtones or Notifications folder
-->
After that, your tune will appear in the list of available calls in the settings. If the file does not appear, restart your smartphone or use an alternative method:
- Open Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Find Music (or Mi Music) and clear the cache.
- Go back to the call settings β your file should appear.
π‘
If you download a tune from the Internet, check it for viruses with VirusTotal or Dr.Web Light. Some ringtone sites spread malware.
3 Hidden folders and system limitations: why your tune is not visible
Frequent problem: the user has moved.mp3-file in the Ringtones folder, but it doesn't appear in the settings:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| File is not displayed | Wrong folder name (registration is important!) | Rename Ringtones (without quotation marks, with a capital letter) |
| The melody is there, but it is not reproduced. | Unsupported format or bitrate | Convert to MP3 with a bitrate of 128-320 kbit / s |
| The bell rings, but it stops. | The file is too long (>30 seconds) | Cut in Ringtone Maker or Audacity |
| No Ringtones folder. | The system didn't create it. | Create manually at the root of memory |
On devices with MIUI 13+, the system scans media files only in certain folders: Ringtones, Notifications, Alarms and Music. If your file is in Download or another directory, it will not be available for selection. Also check if the file is hidden: in Mi File Manager, click on three dots in the upper right corner and select Show hidden files.
If you use SD-Make sure it's formatted as internal memory (in the storage settings), otherwise the system may ignore the files on it. 12T) After transferring the file to Ringtones, you need to restart the phone so that it appears in the list.
4 Call apps: Zedge, Ringtone Maker and alternatives
If you don't like the built-in MIUI tools, you can use third-party apps.
- π΅ Zedge is the largest database of ringtones, notifications and wallpapers, and there is a Russian-language interface and a category called Trends, where popular tunes are collected.
- βοΈ Ringtone Maker - allows you to crop any audio files and save them as bells. fade-in/fade-out smoothly.
- π Ringdroid is open source software for creating ringtones out of music, no advertising, but the interface is in English.
- πΆ MP3 Cutter is a simple editor for cutting tracks. It can export directly to the settings of calls.
To install the call through Zedge:
- Download the app from Google Play.
- Register (you can use Google or Facebook).
- In the Ringtones section, find your favorite tune.
- Click Set and select the Caller.
If the melody is not applied after installation, check the application permissions: go to Settings β Apps β Zedge β Permissions and enable access to Storage and Settings of Sound.

5. Different calls for different contacts
In MIUI, you can assign unique tunes to individual contacts, which is convenient if you want to know who's calling right away, whether it's your boss, your friend, your relative.
Open the Contacts app (or Phone) and find the contact you want. Slip it, then click Edit (pencil icon). Scroll down to the Caller (some models have it hidden under Additional) and you can select any available tune, including custom ones. Save the changes.
If the Caller item is missing, update the Contacts app via Google Play. on some firmware (e.g, MIUI 12.5 Enhanced) This feature is only available for contacts saved on the SIM-map or Mi Account. To get around the restriction, transfer the contact to your Google account:
- Open contact. β More. β Export.
- Select Google as your target account.
- Save and try again to make a call.
On the POCO F4 GT and other Xiaomi gaming smartphones, there is an option: vibration patterns for contacts. These can be configured in the same contact editing menu, for example, for important calls you can set a long vibration, and for spam - short.
6.Problems and Solutions: The call is unchanged or reset
Sometimes users find that the call is spontaneously reset to a standard one or does not save after a reboot. Here are the typical reasons and ways to eliminate them:
β οΈ Note: If you use dual applications (functions) MIUI for cloning messengers, the call may be reset due to a conflict of settings. β Annexes β Dual annexes.
- π Reset after update: After installing the new version MIUI Some settings are reset. Before updating, back up your calls (copy the Ringtones folder on your PC).
- π± Optimizer conflict: The Security app can block changes in sounds. Open it, go to Optimization. β Autostart and add the app for calls in exceptions.
- π Work profile restrictions: If the phone has a Work profile set up (on corporate devices), the administrator can block the change in sounds. β Accounts. β Working profile.
If the call changes but does not play back when you call, check:
- Volume (press the volume button during the call).
- Do not disturb (Settings β Sounds β Do not disturb).
- Settings SIM-Maps: two-symbol Xiaomi call may differ for each SIM. Check in Settings β SIM-maps and mobile networks β Call for a call. SIM1/SIM2.
π‘
If the call doesn't change after all the manipulations, try resetting the sound settings: Settings β System β Resetting β Reset the sound settings. This won't delete your files, but it will return all sounds to factory values.
7. Additional chips: dynamic calls and automation
MIUI 14 has dynamic calls that adapt to the time of day or location, such as setting up a quiet signal at work and a loud one at home.
Go to Settings β Sounds and Vibrations β Dynamic Sounds. Turn on the option and set the rules.
- π Home: Volume 100%, tune "Cute Call".
- π’ At work: volume 30%, vibration.
- π In the car: volume 70%, connection to Bluetooth speaker.
You can use MacroDroid (free on Google Play) to automate, and you can use it to:
- π Change the call depending on the connected Wi-Fi network.
- π Establish a quiet regime at night.
- π΅ Include a random tune from the playlist at every call.
Example of macros for MacroDroid:
Trigger: Connecting to Wi-Fi "Home"
Action: Set the call β Select the file "home_ringtone.mp3"
Restriction: Time from 18:00 to 23:00For advanced users, there is another way β ADB-They can use them to assign a call directly, without an interface, for example, to install a file. /sdcard/Ringtones/my_tone.mp3 Like the default call, do it:
adb shell settings put system ringtone /sdcard/Ringtones/my_tone.mp3β οΈ Attention: Use ADB requires on-set debugging. USB (Settings β The phone. β Version. MIUI β 7 times to tap according to the version β return to β For developers β Debugging by USB). Incorrect commands can cause system failure.
