Why Xiaomiβs Standard Ringtones Are Boring and How to Fix It
Are you tired of the monotonous "MI-mi-mi" every time a phone rings? Xiaomi's MIUI-based smartphones offer flexible audio settings, but not everyone knows how to make the most of them. By default, the system has only 10-15 tunes pre-installed, and most of them sound too official or just annoying after the hundredth listening.
Fortunately, MIUI 14 and 15 now have the ability to install custom ringtones up to 30 seconds without cropping, which means you can play a favorite song, a natural sound, or even a voice message. But there's a nuance: not all formats are supported, and some techniques require additional applications. In this article, we'll look at all the current ways, from basic to advanced.
Itβs important to understand that the interface may vary slightly depending on the model (Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Xiaomi 13T) and the firmware version. If you have an older version of MIUI (below 12.5), some menu items may be called differently β weβll mention that too.
Method 1: Standard Change through Settings
The simplest method that works on all Xiaomi devices without additional apps is suitable for choosing from preinstalled tunes or those that you previously added to the system.
Open the Settings app β go to the Sounds and Vibrations section β select Call Melody. Here you will see three tabs:
- π΅ Standard β ringtones from Xiaomi (minimalistic and classic);
- π Local β tunes you upload to the Ringtones folder;
- πΆ MIUI β Thematic sounds (not available on all firmware).
To listen to a tune, just tap it. To confirm your choice, click OK in the upper right corner. Note: MIUI 15 has a non-save pre-listening feature β hold your finger on the tune for 2 seconds.

If the list does not have a Local tab, create a Ringtones folder at the root of the phoneβs internal memory and restart the device.
Method 2: Install custom ringtone through file manager
If you didn't have the standard options, you can add your own tune, and any audio file in.mp3,.m4a or.ogg format that lasts up to 30 seconds will do, and the optimal bitrate is 128-192 kbps, otherwise the sound can be distorted.
Instructions:
- Connect your phone to your PC or download the file directly to your device.
- Move the audio file to the Internal Storage β Ringtones folder (if not, create it manually).
- Restart your phone (required!)
- Go to Settings β Sounds and vibration β Call melody β Local.
Your tune should be on the list.
- π Check the file extension (should be.mp3, not.mp3.mp3);
- π Make sure the file is in Ringtones, not Notifications or Alarms;
- π Try renaming the file to Latin (without Cyrillic and characters).

β οΈ Note: On some models (POCO F4, Redmi K50) The Ringtones folder can be hidden. To see it, turn on the hidden files in the file manager (for example, in Files by Google or Mi File Manager).
Method 3: Using the Themes app for unique sounds
Few people know, but Xiaomiβs Themes app has a section with free and paid audio packages, an official way to diversify ringtones without risking the system.
How it works:
- Open the Topic app;
- Go to the Sounds section (or Ringtones in English).
- Select the package you like and click Apply;
- Then go to Settings β Sounds and Vibration β Call Melody and select the downloaded sound.
Pros of the method:
- π¨ A wide range of themed sounds (from nature to electronic music);
- π Automatic update of the collection;
- π± Optimized for MIUI (No problem with compatibility).
Cons:
- π° Some packages are paid (from 50 to 300 rubles);
- π΄ Requires an Internet connection to download;
- π Not all sounds can be heard before installation.

Method 4: Third-party applications for advanced users
If you need more control, like assigning different tunes to different contacts or using.flac files, you'll need to install third-party software. We tested 3 apps that run on MIUI 14/15:
| Annex | Features | Cons | Reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zedge | Over 1 million ringtones, wallpapers and notifications. | Advertising, some sounds are paid. | Google Play |
| Ringtone Maker | Track trimming, format conversion, appointment to contacts. | The interface is overloaded, sometimes it flies out. | Google Play |
| MP3 Cutter and Ringtone Maker | FLAC support, fade-in/fade-out effects, export to MIUI. | Watermarks on the covers. | Google Play |
How to Assign a Custom Rington through Zedge:
- Install and open the application;
- Find the sound you want (use the Ringtones filter).
- Press Set as ringtone;
- Select MIUI Ringtone from the list of options.
- Confirm your choice in the system window.
β οΈ Note: When using third-party applications MIUI This may show an "Unknown Source" warning. This is normal - just allow access in the security settings (Settings) β Annexes β Special permits β Installation of unknown applications).
Method 5: Assigning individual ringtones to contacts
You want your mom to ring a bell and your boss to have a worrying siren? MIUI has this natively implemented, but many users don't know where to look for a setup.
Step-by-step:
- Open the Contacts app;
- Choose the contact you want and click Edit (pencil icon);
- Slip on the Call Melody (or Ringtone);
- Choose sound from standard or local.
- Save the changes.
Features:
- π It works even if the contact is saved. SIM-map;
- π You can assign different tunes for calls and messages;
- π If the contact is blacklisted, the individual ringtone won't work.

Problem Solving: Why the Call Melody Doesn't Change
Sometimes users find that the ringtone does not change or resets after a reboot. Here are the most common reasons and their solutions:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The melody doesn't persist | File in the wrong format | Convert to MP3 via Online-Convert or Audacity |
| The ringtones list is blank. | Ringtones folder not created | Create it manually at the root of memory |
| The sound is cut off. | File longer than 30 seconds | Cut through Ringtone Maker or ffmpeg |
| Rington drops | Media Storage Cache Error | Clear the cache in Settings β Apps β Show everything β Media Storage |
If nothing helps, try resetting the sound settings to factory:
- Go to Settings β System and device β Resetting settings;
- Select Resetting of sound settings;
- Confirm the action.

Before resetting your sound settings, write down the current settings (loudness, vibration, melodies) as they will return to default values.
