Are you tired of the standard ringtone that all subscribers in your Xiaomi have? Want important contacts โ for example, calls from loved ones or colleagues โ to stand out with a unique melody? In this article, we will discuss all possible ways to change the ringtone for a separate contact on Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones with the MIUI shell (relevant for versions 12-14).
Unlike many Android devices, where this feature is hidden in the depths of settings, MIUI offers several ways, from standard tools to hidden features. We also tell you what to do if the desired contact is not displayed in the list to change the melody, or how to assign a customized signal for messages (SMS). Ready? Let's start with the simplest method!
1. Standard method through the application "Contacts"
This is a basic method that works on most Xiaomi devices without additional apps. Suitable for smartphones with MIUI 12-14, including the Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Xiaomi 13 and others.
Open the Contacts app, find the contact you want and tap it. On the card you open, click three dots (โฎ) In the upper right corner, and select Set the ringtone. If that's not the case, read the next section, where we'll look at alternative paths.
- ๐ Contact Finder: Use the search bar at the top if the list is too long.
- ๐ต Melody selection: the system will offer standard ringtones MIUI and files from the Ringtones folder on the device.
- ๐ฑ Preview: Before saving, you can listen to the melody by clicking on it.
โ ๏ธ Attention: On some firmware MIUI (Especially global) item Install ringtone may not be available. This is not a mistake - the manufacturer sometimes simplifies the interface.
2. Change the ringtone via the phone's "Settings"
If there is no option to change the tune in the Contacts app, try it through system settings. This method is universal and works even on older Xiaomi models (for example, Redmi 9 or Mi A3).
Go to Settings โ Sound and Vibration โ Phone Rington. Here you will see a list of contacts for which you can assign a custom tune. If the desired subscriber is not on the list, click Add Contact and select it from the address book. After that, assign a ringtone from the proposed options or download your file (for this, see section 4).
| Xiaomi model | Support for individual ringtones | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi 13/13 Pro | Yes (MIUI 14) | The function is available in standard settings |
| Redmi Note 12 | Yes (MIUI 13/14) | You may need to update your firmware |
| POCO F5 | Yes. | The interface may be different (POCO Launcher shell) |
| Xiaomi Mi 11 | Yes (MIUI 12.5+) | On older versions of MIUI, the function is hidden |
Important: On some firmware for the Chinese market (CN ROM), the option of individual ringtones can be disabled by default, in which case changing the firmware region or using third-party applications (section 5) will help.
3. Use of the Phone application (for calls)
Few people know, but in the standard Phone app, you can also assign a unique melody to the contact, and this method works even where previous methods did not work.
Open the Phone app, go to the Contact tab and find the number you want. Tap it, then click on the pencil icon (โ๏ธ) You can edit it. Scroll down to the Rington field (or Call Sound) and select the melody. If there's no field, then your version is yours. MIUI It does not support this method.
The number is saved in the phone book (not on the phone). SIM-map)
Contact is not duplicated (remove copies)
The phone is connected to the Internet (for downloading tunes)

4. Adding custom melodies (his own) MP3-file)
Standard MIUI ringtones get boring quickly. Fortunately, you can use any audio file in MP3, WAV or M4A format (maximum duration of 30 seconds).
- Download or transfer the desired audio file to your phone (for example, through Explorer or Google Drive).
- Move the file to the Ringtones folder (create it in the root memory directory if it is not).
- Reboot your phone (this will update the list of available ringtones).
- Now your file will be available in the tone list when selecting a ringtone to contact.
If the Ringtones folder does not appear in the source list, check file access permissions. MIUI sometimes requires manually allowing memory access for the Contacts or Phone app.
โ ๏ธ Note: Files with a bitrate above 192 kbps can be played with a delay or cropped. MP3 with a bitrate of 128 kbps and duration up to 20 seconds.

To quickly crop a song under the ringtone, use the MP3 Cutter app or the online service AudioTrimmer.com.
5. Third-party applications for flexible settings
If standard methods donโt work, Google Play apps will come to the rescue, not only assigning unique ringtones, but also offering advanced features: different tunes for work and personal contacts, vibrations, light signals and even voice alerts.
The best apps for Xiaomi:
- ๐ถ Zedge: a huge library of free ringtones and notifications, supports Russian language and integration with the Internet MIUI.
- ๐ Ringtone Maker: Allows you to create ringtones from any audio file directly on your phone.
- ๐ฑ Contact Ringtones: specializes in customized contact tunes, works even on older versions of Android.
Once you install any of these apps, open it, select a contact, and assign a tune. Most programs automatically sync to the MIUI system settings, so no additional action is required.

6 Problem Solving: Why doesn't the ringtone change?
Sometimes users find that the assigned melody is not saved or reset to a standard one. Let's consider the most common causes and ways to eliminate them:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Rington resets after rebooting | Application cache error Contacts | Clear the cache in Settings โ Applications โ Contacts โ Memory |
| There is no option to "Install the ringtone" | Outdated version of MIUI or firmware for the Chinese market | Update your firmware or use third-party apps |
| The castom melody is not played | Wrong file format or path to folder | Check that the file is in the Ringtones folder and is MP3 format. |
If none of the methods helped, try resetting the settings of the Phone application:
- Go to Settings โ Applications โ Application Management โ Phone.
- Press Warehouse. โ Reset the settings.
- Reset the device.

On devices with MIUI for the Chinese market (CN ROM), the individual ringtones function can be blocked, in which case only the re-flashing to the global version or the use of third-party applications will help.
7. Set up unique notifications for SMS
In addition to calls, you can assign a customized notification sound to messages from a particular contact, which is convenient if you want to know immediately who the SMS came from (for example, from a bank or delivery service).
For this:
- Open the Messages app (MIUI Messages).
- Find a dialogue with the right contact and tap on the three-point (โฎ) top-right.
- Select Details โ Notifications โ Sound.
- Assign a tune from the list or add your own (similar to section 4).
Note that this method only works for the standard Messages app, and if you use WhatsApp, Telegram, or other messengers, the notifications are set up in the apps themselves.
