Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector: How to set up, connect and use with maximum impact

Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector has become one of the most popular home theater solutions thanks to its combination of affordable prices, compact sizes and advanced features, which is suitable for watching movies in high resolution, as well as for presentations or games — if you set it up correctly. However, many users face difficulties when connecting for the first time or do not know how to unleash the full potential of the gadget.

In this guide, we will take you through all the steps of projector work, from unpacking and networking to fine-tuning images and sound, how to avoid typical installation errors, what accessories you really need, and how to solve common problems (such as overheating or blurry images), and also unique life hacks to optimize brightness and contrast for different use cases that you will not find in the standard instructions.

Compilation and preparation for first inclusion

Before you start setting up, check that the box with the projector Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector (models Mi Smart Projector 2, Mi Smart Projector 2 Pro or other versions) are all the necessary components.

• 📦 Projector with lens (usually protected film)
• 🔌 Power supply with cable (pay attention to the power - in different models it varies from one to the next). 65W before 120W)

2. Network connection and first activation

Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector supports two main ways to connect to the Internet: via Wi-Fi and via Ethernet cable.

Connection via Wi-Fi

To connect to a wireless network:

1. Turn on the projector with a button on the case or remote.
2. In the main menu, select Settings → Network → Wi-Fi.
3. Find your network in the list and enter your password (use the remote or Mi Home app for convenience).
4. Wait for the tick next to the network name – this means that the connection is successful.

If the projector can’t see your network, check:

• 📶 Does the router work (try connecting another gadget).
• 🔒 Does the projector support the frequency of your network (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz).
• 🔄 Reboot the router and projector.

Connection by cable (Ethernet)

For a stable connection (for example, for streaming in 4K), it is better to use a wired connection:

1. Connect the Ethernet cable to the port on the back of the projector.
2. The other end of the cable is inserted into the router or modem.
3. In the projector menu, select Settings → Network → Wired network.
4. Wait for automatic receipt IP-Addresses (or manually configure them if required).

Once connected to the network, the projector will automatically check for firmware updates, and we recommend installing them immediately, as new versions often fix bugs and add support for new services (for example, Disney+ or HBO Max).

3. Image customization: brightness, contrast, focusing

The quality of the image on the Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector depends not only on the original content, but also on the right settings.

1. Set the projector on a flat surface (or fasten it to a tripod).
2. Include the test picture in the Settings menu → Screen → Test sample.
3. Turn the focus ring on the lens until the lines are as sharp as possible.
4. If the image is trapezoidal (broader at the bottom or top), correct this in the Settings menu → Screen → Keston correction.

For automatic distortion correction, the Mi Smart Projector 2/2 Pro has autocaston, which is activated in the same menu — just hover over the projector and confirm the setting.

Optimal brightness and color settings

Factory settings rarely fit all scenarios, and here are the recommended settings for different cases:

• 🎬 For movies in a dark room: Mode of the image: Movie Brightness: 45-55% Contrast: 70-80% Color temperature: Warm
• 🎮 For games: Image mode: Game or Dynamic Brightness: 60-70% Contrast: 85-90% Enable low delay mode (Game Mode)
• 📊 For presentations/documents: Image mode: Standard Brightness: 80-90% Contrast: 60-70% Color temperature: Neutral

⚠️ Attention: During prolonged operation at maximum brightness (100%), the projector may overheat, which reduces the life of the lamp. LED-Backlighting (e.g. Mi Smart Projector 2 Pro) is less of a risk, but it is still not recommended to use extremes for more than 2 hours in a row.

To fine-tune the color in the Settings menu → Image → Additional options are available Saturation, Shade and Gamma. If you are not sure about your calibration skills, use pre-set modes (Cinema, Sports, Game).

4. Connecting external devices: set-top boxes, game consoles, laptops

Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector is equipped with several ports for connecting additional equipment, let's figure out how to use them correctly.

Connection via HDMI

It's the most universal way. It's the right way to:

Instructions:

1. Connect the device to the HDMI-IN port on the back of the projector.
2. On the projector remote, press the Source (or Input) button and select HDMI.

For gamers, it’s important: in the Mi Smart Projector 2 Pro models, the Game Mode’s input lag is about 30-40 ms, which is acceptable for most games.

Connection via USB

The USB-A port on the projector is used for:

Note that the projector does not support OTG to connect a mouse/keyboard or smartphone in data mode.

Wireless streaming from your phone (Miracast/AirPlay)

To broadcast the screen of the smartphone without wires:

1. On your smartphone, enable wireless broadcasting: For Android: Settings → Connected devices → Screen Broadcast. For iPhone: swipe up for the control panel → Screen Duplication.

⚠️ Attention: Wireless broadcasts can delay audio up to 0.5 seconds. This is not critical for watching movies, but it can interfere with games. HDMI.

💡

If the projector can’t see your smartphone through Miracast, try turning off the VPN or power saving mode on the phone – they can block the connection.

5. Sound tuning: speakers, soundbars and Bluetooth headphones

The built-in speakers in the Xiaomi Mi Smart Projector (usually 2×10W) are suitable for home use, but for full immersion, it is better to connect external acoustics.

Connecting external speakers or soundbar

There are three ways:

1. Through AUX (3.5 mm): Connect speakers to the AUX OUT port on the projector. From the Settings menu → Sound → Output audio port, select Analog.
2. Through HDMI ARC: Suitable if you have an ARC-enabled soundbar. Connect the soundbar to the HDMI ARC port on the projector (if any). In the sound settings, select HDMI ARC.

Bluetooth:

• Turn on the pairing mode on the columns.
• In the projector: Settings → Bluetooth → Add the device.
• Select the columns from the list.
• Manually via USB: Download the firmware for your model from the official Xiaomi website. Unpack the archive and copy the update.zip file to a flash drive (formatted in FAT32). Insert the flash drive into the projector. In the update menu, select Local Update and specify the file.
