The Chinese giant’s smart speaker is not just a speaker, but a full-fledged hub for managing your home, allowing your voice to turn on lights, learn the weather or run favorite tracks. However, in order for the gadget to start working, it must be properly initialized, select the appropriate communication protocol and link to your account.
The process of customizing the hardware can seem challenging to beginners due to the abundance of models such as the Mi Smart Speaker, Mi Compact Speaker or newer versions with support for Google Assistant. Each model has its own nuances of connection, whether it is using the Mi Home app or Google Home. In this material, we will discuss all the steps, from unpacking to solving typical sync errors.
Before you get to the software part, make sure you have a smartphone with an active Android or iOS operating system at hand, as well as a stable Internet connection. It is the Wi-Fi network that is the foundation for most of the functions of a smart device, since it is through the router that the column receives commands and updates its databases.
The choice of model often depends on your needs: someone more important than quality sound for music, and someone more than deep integration with the ecosystem of the smart home. Regardless of the choice, the basic principles of initial configuration remain similar, although the application interfaces may vary.
Preparation of equipment and choice of model
The first step to successful operation is to physically prepare the device. Take the speaker out of the box and carefully inspect the case for damage. You will need an original power supply, as the voltage and current must strictly meet the manufacturer's specification, otherwise the device may not work stable or at all.
Most Xiaomi models have a minimal set of physical buttons: turn on, switch tracks and activate the microphone button. Some devices, such as the Mi Smart Speaker IR, also have an infrared port to manage old TVs. It is important to understand that to work properly, you will need a Mi Account, which is created once and serves as a key to the entire ecosystem of the brand.
Make sure your phone is equipped with Bluetooth and Geolocation (GPS) modules. Without permission to access the location, the app will not be able to detect the device on the local network, which is a common cause of start errors.

Installation and configuration of the Mi Home application
The control center for most of the company’s gadgets is the Mi Home app (or Xiaomi Home), which must be downloaded from the official app store: Google Play for Android or the App Store for iOS. When installing, pay attention to the developer – it must be Xiaomi Inc. to avoid installing fake software.
Once the application is launched, you will need authorization. If you already have an account, just enter your login and password. Otherwise, click the registration button. It is critical to choose the right region in the application settings (usually Russia, China or Europe), since this depends on the list of available devices and the server on which the data will be stored.
The interface is divided into several tabs, but we're interested in the Devices section. This is where all the connected gadgets are displayed. To add a new column, click on the plus icon in the upper right corner of the screen. QR-code or select a device from the list manually.

Step-by-step instructions for connecting via Wi-Fi
The most common way to activate is through a wireless network, make sure the speaker is plugged in and the indicator starts flashing orange, which signals a standby mode, and if the indicator is on blue or green, the device may already be configured and should be reset.
In the Mi Home app, select the device you find. The system will ask you to confirm that the indicator is flashing. Once confirmed, the list of available Wi-Fi networks will open. Select your home network and enter your password. Password errors are the most common cause of failure, so be careful about the character register.

The data transfer process takes from 30 seconds to 2 minutes, during which time the phone transmits the network configuration to the speaker via Bluetooth. After a successful connection, the indicator on the device will light up in an even blue color, and the voice assistant will report success (the phrase “Connected” or similar).
Now you can test the work. Try saying an activation command (e.g., "Hey Xiaomi" or "Ok Google" if the model supports). Voice response will confirm that the microphone is working and the device is online.
Connection via Bluetooth and AUX
It doesn't always require Wi-Fi. Many models, such as the Mi Compact Speaker 2, can operate in portable Bluetooth speaker mode. You don't need the Mi Home app. Turn on the speaker and press the control button (usually the center button or the Bluetooth button) before the beep appears.
On your smartphone, go to Bluetooth settings and start searching for devices. The name of your speaker will appear in the list. Click on it to pair. Once you successfully connect, sound from all the phone's apps will be streamed through the Xiaomi speaker.
For models with a linear input (connector 3.5 mm) a wired connection is available through AUX. This is the ideal option for using a column with a laptop, MP3-A player or TV that doesn't have Bluetooth, and the sound quality of that mode depends on the quality of the cable and the source of the signal.
