When your Xiaomi robot vacuum cleaner suddenly falls silent, it can confuse even an experienced user of smart equipment. Instead of the usual greeting at launch or warning about getting stuck in the dynamics, there is silence, which deprives the cleaning process of the characteristic “communication” with the gadget. Most often the problem lies not in the breakage of the speaker, but in the software settings or changing the service region.
In this article, we will discuss in detail the main reasons for the lack of voice in the Roborock, Viomi and Dreame series devices. You will learn how to force the Russian voice packet to activate, why changing the region in the Mi Home application affects voice acting, and what to do if the device’s firmware “flyed off” after the update.
The lack of audio signals is often confused with the complete inoperability of the device. However, if the vacuum cleaner continues to clean on a schedule, responds to commands from the remote (if any), and displays status in the application, then the hardware is good.
Main reasons for lack of voice
The first thing to check is the current region selected in the Mi Home app. Xiaomi devices often come with Chinese or European firmware, and the voice packet loads depending on which country is specified in your account settings. If you switched region from China to Russia or vice versa, the device may lose access to the server with voice files.
The second common reason is Do Not Disturb mode, which can activate a quiet mode in the vacuum cleaner settings or cleaning schedule, which shuts down not only the engine to maximum power, but also voice notifications, so that the robot does not wake up the household during the night cleaning.
⚠️ Warning: Changing region in the Mi Home app may cause some devices to temporarily disappear from the list or stop updating. Before switching, make sure you remember your primary region.
After a major OTA (Over-The-Air) update, some models may reset custom settings to factory settings, where the default voice can be set to English or Chinese, requiring manual reconfiguration through the device menu.
💡
If you've just updated your firmware, wait 10-15 minutes before checking your voice. The robot needs time to set up language packs in the background after rebooting.
Configure the voice packet in Mi Home
To return the voice to your assistant, you need to go to the device management interface. Click on the vacuum icon in the list of devices, then select the three dots in the upper right corner to access additional settings. Here we are interested in Settings or General Settings.
Inside the menu, find the Voice or Voice Package section. This menu usually provides a list of available languages. If the language you want isn't on the list, click Download or Online Update. Make sure the device is connected to the Wi-Fi network with Internet access.
- 🇷🇺 Select "Russian" from the list of available languages to activate native voiceover.
- 🇬🇱 Check if English is the default language (English), which is often activated automatically.
- 📥 Click Download button if a cloud icon with an arrow is burning next to the selected language.
Sometimes the download process can freeze. If the load indicator is rotating for more than 5 minutes, try restarting the router and the vacuum cleaner itself. It is also important that the phone from which the setup is made has a stable Internet connection, since the voice packet file is transmitted via the mobile device.
Problems of compatibility of versions and regions
One of the most difficult issues is the conflict between the device version and the account region: Global versions of robot vacuum cleaners may not have Russian pre-installed if the account region is set to, for example, Germany or the United States, in which case the system simply does not see the request for Russification.
There is a concept of cross-regional pairing, and if you bought a device that was designed for the Chinese market but linked it to a European server, the functionality can be cut down. In particular, voice packets for Chinese versions are often only available when you select a region called China, but many modern models support multilingualism regardless of the region.
| Type of device | Region of the account | Accessibility of the Russian language | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global Version | Russia/CIS | Complete. | Download in the settings |
| CN Version (China) | China | Full (often) | Changing the region to China |
| Global Version | USA/Europe | Partial/Not present | Change the region to the Russian Federation |
| Viomi (separate appendix) | Anybody. | Depends on the model. | Update the annex |
If changing the region doesn’t help, it’s possible that your model doesn’t physically support Russian at the hardware or basic firmware level, which is typical for very old models or OEM-specific versions released for specific retailers.
Specifics of settings for different brands of the ecosystem
Xiaomi’s ecosystem includes many sub-brands, and each has its own audio customization features, for example, Roborock robots (S5, S6, S7, S8) have the most flexible voice settings, allowing you to even choose the voice of the announcer (male or female), if such packages are available.
Dreame and Trouver devices often require an update via a separate menu inside the device plugin. Sometimes the voice packet has to be downloaded manually if the server is blocking automatic download, in which case cleaning the Mi Home app cache helps.
Viomi models (e.g., V2, V3) are managed via a separate Viomi Home app or a plug-in in Mi Home. They often have a problem when the language settings fly off after reconnecting to Wi-Fi, in which case you need to re-select the language in the Settings → Voice menu.
Roborock's Secret Function
Check both apps if the vacuum cleaner is displayed in multiple locations.
Software failures and reboot
Like any smart gadget, the robot vacuum cleaner is prone to software failures. The background process responsible for playing audio files can freeze after an incorrect shutdown or power surge in the network, in which case the software reboot solves 90% of the problems.
To perform a soft reboot, you need to press two buttons on the device body simultaneously (usually the on button and the Home or Local Clean button) for 5-10 seconds until the device emits an audible signal or says "Resetting." If there is no voice, focus on the LED display.
☑️ Checklist for soft reboot
If the soft reboot doesn't work, reset the Wi-Fi module. Press the Wi-Fi reset button (often by pressing two buttons simultaneously) to the characteristic audible signal that the network settings are reset. After reconnecting to the network, the vacuum cleaner will again request the configuration, including the language.
⚠️ Warning: Full Hard Reset will remove all stored room maps and cleaning schedules. Use this method only if other methods have not helped.
Hardware malfunctions of the dynamics
If software methods are powerless, consider a physical breakdown: a speaker in a robot vacuum cleaner is a compact device that can fail due to moisture from wet cleaning, dust buildup inside the case, or industrial defect.
Signs of hardware malfunction can be:
- 🔇 Complete absence of any sounds, including system squeaks in case of errors.
- 📉 Hoarse, intermittent sound or crackling when trying to reproduce.
- 🤖 Distortion of the voice, resembling “porridge” instead of clear phrases.
In some models, the speaker is located under the top cover, and you can reach it by unscrewing a few screws. However, opening the case automatically voids the warranty. If the device is warranty, you should contact an authorized service center.
💡
If the robot makes system squeaks (errors) but doesn’t speak in phrases, it’s likely the problem is in the software or language settings, not the dynamics.
