The situation when a smart assistant suddenly stops cleaning the entire apartment and starts to run exclusively within the same room, familiar to many owners of Xiaomi equipment. This does not always mean engine failure or a critical failure of electronics. Most often the problem lies in the logic of mapping or blocking the physical navigation mechanisms.
Owners of Roborock, Mijia and Vacuum models may experience this after rearranging furniture or changing flooring. Navigation algorithms based on lidar or gyroscopes can mistake a threshold or dark mat for an insurmountable wall, which is why the device "thinks" that the rest of the apartment doesn't exist.
Before you bring your gadget to the service center, you need to do a few simple diagnostic procedures, and in most cases, you can restore full functionality yourself by restarting the system or cleaning the sensors, and let's look at the underlying causes of this behavior and how to eliminate them.
Problems with obstacle sensors and Cliff sensors
One of the most common reasons why a robot vacuum cleaner ignores other rooms is because of contamination or sensor malfunction, and on the bottom of the device are what are called Cliff sensors, which scan the surface under the device so that the robot doesn't fall down stairs or get stuck on a black carpet.
If these sensors get dusty or covered with a pile, the device gets a false signal that there is a cliff ahead, and as a result, the robot turns around and refuses to leave the current zone, and it is also worth checking the front bumper and collision sensors.
