Xiaomi cameras are some of the most popular smart home devices due to their combination of price, quality and functionality. However, many users face difficulties when connecting for the first time: the device does not find the network, the application emits an error, or the camera shuts down in a few minutes. This guide will help connect the Xiaomi camera to the smartphone in any way possible β via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or the Mi Home app, as well as solve problems.
Weβll look at the current models from 2022 to 2026 (including the Mi Home Security Camera 360Β° 2K, Mi Camera 2 Pro and Xiaomi Smart Camera C400), as well as the universal methods that work for most of the brandβs devices. If your camera is released before 2020, some steps may differ β weβll warn about this separately.
β οΈ Warning: Before connecting, make sure your smartphone is running Android 8.0+ or iOS 12+. Older versions of the OS may not support the latest Mi Home app updates.
1.Preparation for connection: what to check before starting
Before you start setting up, follow a few mandatory steps that will save time and avoid the typical errors like βfailure to connect to the networkβ or βcamera does not respondβ.
1. Power and camera placement. Make sure the device is plugged in (unless it's a battery model like the Mi Home Camera Battery). Place the camera no more than 5 meters away from the router, which is critical for first connection. Walls and furniture can block the 2.4 GHz signal that all Xiaomi cameras use.
2. Network requirements. Xiaomi cameras only work with 2.4 GHz networks (not supporting 5 GHz!). If your router broadcasts both frequencies under the same name (SSID), temporarily disable 5 GHz in your router settings.
- π Network not hidden (disable the option "Hide" SSID" router).
- π Wi-Fi password contains only Latin letters and numbers (without Cyrillic and special characters!).
- π The routerβs network region is set in China or the United States (some camera models do not work well with the CIS regions).
3. Mi Home App. Download the latest version of the official app:
- π± Mi Home for Android
- π Mi Home for iOS
Sign up or sign in to an existing Xiaomi account (without it, the camera won't work!) If you already have an account but you've forgotten your password, restore it in advance - the process can take up to 24 hours due to security checks.
2. Connecting Xiaomi camera via Wi-Fi (main method)
This is the most reliable method, which works for 90% of models, and is suitable for Wi-Fi-enabled cameras, including the Mi Home Security Camera 2K, Mi Camera 2 and Xiaomi Smart Camera C300.
Step 1: Activate the pairing mode: Press and hold the reset button (usually located on the bottom of the camera) for 5-10 seconds until you hear a voice message in Chinese:" (meaning "Ready to pair"). Some models (e.g., Mi Camera 2 Pro) will have a blue light instead of a voice.
Step 2. Add the device to Mi Home. Open the Mi Home app, go to the Devices tab β click + (add device) β select the Camera category. If your model doesn't appear in the list, click Other and select Add manually.
Step 3. Connect to the network. The app will prompt you to scan. QR-camera-code ID (It's printed on a sticker underneath the device:
- Select your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network from the list.
- Enter your password (check the register!).
- Wait for the message "Device added" (can take up to 3 minutes).
β οΈ Warning: If the error βI was unable to connect to the networkβ appears during the Wi-Fi connection stage, check if the router is blocking new devices (turn off filtering by the Internet). MAC-address in the router settings).
βοΈ Checklist before connecting via Wi-Fi
Connection via Bluetooth (for models with support)
Some Xiaomi cameras (such as the Mi Home Security Camera 2 or Xiaomi Smart Camera C400) support initial setup via Bluetooth. This method is useful if Wi-Fi is unstable or you are in a place with poor coverage.
Step 1: Turn on Bluetooth on your smartphone and allow Mi Home to use it (the app will request access when you first connect). Make sure the camera is in pairing mode (see Step 1 from the previous section).
Step 2. At the Mi Home appendix:
- Go to Profile β Settings β Add the device.
- Select Cameras β Your Model β Connect via Bluetooth.
- Follow the instructions on the screen (the app will find the camera and offer to switch to Wi-Fi).
Step 3: Switch to Wi-Fi. After a successful Bluetooth connection, the app will suggest connecting the camera to your Wi-Fi network. Enter the password and wait until the setup is complete. If there is an error at this point, try:
- π Reboot router.
- πΆ Move the camera closer to the router.
- π§ Reset the camera settings (hold the reset button for 15 seconds).
π‘
If the camera doesn't find Bluetooth, try turning off the power saving for the Mi Home app in your phone's settings. On Android, this is done in the "Special Access" section for the app.
4.Camera setup after connection: what to do
Once connected successfully, the camera will stream the video, but to work properly, you need to adjust several key parameters, and if you miss this step, you risk getting lags in the broadcast or no motion notifications.
1. Update firmware. Go to the camera settings in the Mi Home application β About device β Software update. If a new version is available, install it. Outdated firmware is the main cause of connection errors and freezes.
2. Set up notifications to receive traffic alerts:
- In the camera settings, select Alerts β Sensitivity.
- Set the slider on the Medium or High (at the maximum there will be false positives from shadows).
- Enable the "Phone Notifications" option.
3. Video optimization. By default, the camera can stream low-resolution video. To change that:
- π₯ Go to Camera Settings β Video quality.
- π Choose. 1080p or 2K (if supported by the model).
- π Enable Adaptive Bitrate for stable broadcasting with weak internet.
What to do if the camera is permanently disconnected from Wi-Fi?
5. Solving common connection errors
Even with the exact following of the instructions, there can be failures, and we have compiled solutions for the most common problems based on user feedback and recommendations from Xiaomi support.
| Mistake. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| "I couldn't get on the grid." | Wrong Wi-Fi Password or Wrong Frequency (5GHz) | Check the frequency of the network, reconnect the camera |
| "Offline device" | Camera lost contact with router | Restart the router and camera, check the distance |
| "QR-code is unrecognizable" | Too bright lighting or dirt on the code | Wipe the code, try entering the ID manually. |
| "Server Error (4001)" | Problems with Xiaomi account or servers | Leave your account and re-enter, check the Internet |
Some Xiaomi models (especially newer ones) may be blocked for use outside of China.
- In the Mi Home app, go to Profile β Settings β Region.
- Choose China (China Mainland)
- Restart the application and reconnect.
β οΈ Warning: Changing the region may restrict access to certain functions (e.g. voice commands in Russian) and once connected, the region can be reverted back to the region.
6.Plug Xiaomi camera to multiple phones
If you want to give your camera to family members or colleagues, you don't have to reconnect it, but you just need to set up sharing through your Xiaomi account.
Method 1. Family access (recommended).
- In the Mi Home app, go to Profile β Family Access.
- Click Add a family member and enter an email or phone number.
- Select the devices you want to access (including the camera).
- Confirm the invitation on the second phone.
Method 2. Shared account (not recommended) If you don't want to create family access, you can just sign in to one Xiaomi account on both phones, but this is inconvenient: notifications will be duplicated, and settings changed from one device will apply to the second.
π‘
Family access allows you to manage rights flexibly: you can only allow video viewing or also manage camera settings.
7. Alternative ways of connecting (without Mi Home)
If for some reason you can't use the official Mi Home app (for example, because of sanctions restrictions), there are workarounds. They're less stable, but they work in 70% of cases.
Method 1. Through third-party applications. Some Xiaomi cameras are supported in alternative programs like TinyCam Pro (Android) or Home Assistant (smart home).
- Find out. IP-The camera address on your network (via router or Mi Home).
- Enter it in the settings of the third-party application.
