Xiaomi TVs (Mi TV, Redmi Smart TV, Xiaomi TV A) offer users not only high-quality images, but also advanced control capabilities. However, many owners still use only basic remote functions, without even knowing that you can control the TV by voice, from a smartphone or even through smart speakers. In this article, we will analyze all available methods, from standard to hidden, and solve typical connection problems.
The Xiaomi ecosystem is very well integrated with other Xiaomi devices, and if you have a Redmi smartphone or a Mi AI Speaker smart speaker, you can use them to control your TV without making any extra purchases, but even without them, you can have universal solutions, like the Mi Remote app or the built-in Google Assistant, and the key is to set up the connection properly and avoid common mistakes, which we'll talk about.
1.Management through the original Xiaomi remote: hidden features
The original Xiaomi TV remote looks minimalistic, but hides a number of useful features that are not written in the manual. For example, most models support voice search through the microphone on the remote (button with the microphone icon). To activate it, hold the button 1-2 seconds - after the beep you can say commands in Russian or English.
Another little-known feature is the rapid switching of signal sources. Instead of going to the Sources menu, press and hold the Home button, a panel with the last inputs used will appear (HDMI 1, TV, USB, etc.) This saves time, especially if you often connect a game console or TV- console.
- π Voice search: Hold the microphone button, say the name of a movie or channel (works with YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video).
- π Quick input switch: Hold Home β select a source from the list.
- π Turn off microphone sound: In the remote settings (Settings β remote control β Voice assistant) you can deactivate the microphone for privacy.
- π Battery check: press Settings + Up at the same time β the charge indicator will appear on the screen (does not work on all models).
If the remote is not responding, check the batteries first (Xiaomi often uses two AAA thumb batteries). If they are not the problem, try resetting the remote: remove the batteries for 30 seconds, then insert back and restart the TV, which solves the problem of the "invisibility" of the signal in 80% of cases.
2. Mi Remote app: setup and problem solving
Mi Remote (available for Android and iOS) makes it possible to turn a smartphone into a universal remote for Xiaomi TV and other devices, its main advantage is the work without the Internet (only Bluetooth or IR port is needed), but many users face connection errors, letβs look at the step-by-step settings and typical problems.
To start, make sure your TV supports control via Mi Remote. This works with all Mi TV 4/4A/4C/4S, Redmi Smart TV and newer models. If you have an older model (like Mi TV 3), you may need an IR blaster on your smartphone.
Install Mi Remote from the App Store/Google Play
Turn on Bluetooth on your smartphone and TV
Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network (for some features)
Update the TV firmware to the latest version
-->
Instructions for connection:
- Open Mi Remote and click Add Device.
- Select the TV category β Xiaomi brand.
- Follow the hints on the screen. If the TV is not found, manually type in the model.
- Allow access to Bluetooth and Locations (required for Android).
- After successful connection, check the operation of the buttons in the application.
β οΈ Warning: If the TV is not detected, try turning off VPN on your smartphone β some versions of Mi Remote block the connection when active VPN. Also check if the Do Not Disturb mode on the TV is turned on (it can block external commands).
If the remote in the application is running late, try:
- πΆ Reconnect to another Wi-Fi network (sometimes dual-band routers 2.4/5 Hz cause conflicts).
- π Reboot the TV and smartphone.
- ποΈ Clear the cache of the Mi Remote app in your smartphone settings.
3. Voice control: Google Assistant and Alice
Xiaomi Android TVs (e.g., Mi TV Q1/Q2, Xiaomi TV A Pro) support voice assistants like Google Assistant and Alice from Yandex. The first one is built-in by default, and you'll need additional customization to work with Alice. Let's look at both options.
Google Assistant is activated by a microphone button on the remote or a voice command, "OK, Google."
- π¬ Search for movies and TV series by title or genre (Show Comedies 2023).
- πΊ Switch channels ("Enable Channel One").
- π Adjust the volume ("Enhance the sound by 20%").
- π‘οΈ Manage smart devices ("Switch off the living room lights" if connected via Mi Home).
To set Alice up:
- Install the Yandex app with Google Play on your TV.
- Log in to your Yandex account.
- Activate the skill "Manage TV" in the settings of Alice.
- Say "Alice, find the movies on the TV" to check.
| Function | Google Assistant | Alice. |
|---|---|---|
| Search for content | β (YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video) | β (Kinopoisk, IVI, Okko) |
| Channel management | β | β |
| Volume control | β | β |
| Working with a smart home | β (Mi Home, Google Home) | β (Yandex Smart Home) |
| Offline team support | β | β |
β οΈ Warning: If the voice assistant doesn't respond to commands, check the microphone on the remote control, it may have become contaminated. Wipe it with a dry wipe or compressed air. Also make sure that the settings on the TV (Settings β Voice Assistant) include the "Speech Recognition" option.
π‘
If the TV doesnβt respond to voice commands, try reinstalling the Google app (on some firmware, it conflicts with system services).
4.Management through smart speakers and the Mi Home ecosystem
If you have a smart speaker Mi AI Speaker, Google Nest or Yandex Station, you can control a Xiaomi TV without a remote. To do this, the TV and speaker must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network and linked to the same Mi Account (for Mi Home) or Google Account.
Examples of voice commands for Mi AI Speaker:
- πΊ "Switch on the TV in the living room" (if the TV supports remote switching on).
- π "Rise the volume on the TV to 50%."
- π₯ "Play The Lord of the Rings movie on TV" (Opens YouTube or Netflix).
- π "Switch to HDMI 1."
To connect via Mi Home:
- Open the Mi Home app and add the TV as a new device.
- Select a room (such as the "Living Room").
- Synchronize the TV with the smart speaker in the Automation section.
- Set up scenarios such as βWhen I say βCinemaβ, turn on the TV and turn off the lights.β
Important: Not all Xiaomi TV models support remote Wi-Fi enabledness. This feature is only available on TVs with an Amlogic T972 chip or later (e.g. Mi TV Q1E, Xiaomi TV A2 2023). To check compatibility, check the specifications of your model on the mi.com website.

5. Alternative methods: HDMI-CEC and third-party remotes
If standard methods do not work, you can use HDMI-CEC technology, which allows you to control the TV through the remote from a connected device (for example, Xiaomi Mi Box or PlayStation).
- Connect the device to the TV via HDMI.
- Go to Settings β HDMI-CEC (can be called βAnynet+β or βBravia Syncβ depending on the model).
- Enable the option "HDMI Management".
- Now the console or game console will control the main functions of the TV (on, volume, switching channels).
Another option is universal remotes from other brands (like Logitech Harmony or BroadLink RM4), which support Xiaomi TV through a codebase.
- π± Download the remote app (e.g. Harmony App).
- π Select the Xiaomi brand and TV model.
- π Sync the remote to the base via Wi-Fi.
- π― Check the buttons (reassign them manually if necessary).
β οΈ Warning: When using HDMI-CEC, some features may not work properly. For example, if the Xiaomi Mi Box is connected, voice search through its remote may conflict with the TV's voice assistant, in which case turn off HDMI-CEC for a particular port in the settings.
6. Solving Common Management Problems
Even after you set it up properly, users are faced with errors, and we'll look at the most common ones and how to fix them.
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The remote is not responding. | Batteries discharged, interference from other IR devices | Replace batteries, check line of sight |
| Mi Remote is not connected | Outdated TV firmware, conflict with VPN | Update TV software, disable VPN on your smartphone |
| Voice assistant doesn't hear commands | Microphone contaminated, turned off in settings | Clean the microphone, check the permissions in Settings β Privacy |
| TV is not turned on over Wi-Fi | Quick Launch mode is off. | Enable Settings β Energy Saving β Quick Start |
| HDMI-CEC is not working well. | Conflict with other devices on the same HDMI | Disable CEC for unnecessary ports or update the console firmware |
If none of these methods worked, reset your TV settings:
- Go to Settings β About TV β Reset settings.
- Select Reset All Settings (not Erase All Data to avoid losing installed apps).
- After restarting, repeat the control setting.
π‘
Before reset, record or photograph the current image and sound settings - after reset, they will have to be reconfigured.
