Modern smart cleaning models, such as the Xiaomi Vacuum Mop 2 Pro or newer versions, have impressive navigation functionality. However, to make the device work as efficiently as possible and not waste battery power on re-scanning already cleaned areas, you need to build a proper digital model of your home. Mapping is the first and most important step in getting acquainted with a new gadget, on which the quality of all subsequent operation depends.
The navigation grid formation process occurs automatically during the first run, but the user often needs to intervene in settings to optimize the route. LDS-A sensor or laser rangefinder located on the top of the housing scans the room, measuring the distances to the walls and furniture. If you have just unpacked the device, let it complete a full cleaning cycle in an open space so that the building algorithm can correctly draw the contours of rooms without distortion.
In some cases, the system can go wrong, especially if there are many mirrors, black surfaces, or complex obstacles in the room, you have to manually adjust the data, separate the combined rooms, or, conversely, combine disparate zones, and understanding the principles of the navigation system will allow you to avoid the typical mistakes when the robot gets stuck in the same places or ignores certain areas of the floor.
Preparation of the premises before the first launch
Before you start scanning, you need to make space, remove wires, socks, toys and other small objects that can get entangled in your brushes, and the robot needs to see the floor as clean as possible so that its sensors can read the terrain correctly, rather than mistake the scattered things for stationary obstacles.
Provide good lighting in rooms, although laser models are less dependent on light than optical ones. However, the contrast between furniture and flooring helps sensors better navigate. Open all interior doors if you plan to build a single map of an apartment, or close them if you want to adjust the cleaning in the room.
β οΈ Warning: Do not move the base during the map construction process. If the robot loses its reference point, the map may form with errors or bias, and the procedure will have to start over.
It is also important to check the battery power before starting. To build an accurate model of a large area can take up to 2-3 hours of continuous operation. If the charge is less than 80%, it is better to put the device on base and wait for full charging, otherwise interruption of the process in the middle can lead to the preservation of a defective circuit.
βοΈ Preparation for map construction
Automatic map construction process
The map creation starts automatically when the device is first turned on after pairing with the smartphone. You need to press the start button on the case or in the Mi Home application. The robot will exit the dock, make a small circle to calibrate the gyroscope and start moving around the perimeter.
At this time, you'll see blue or gray lines drawn in real time on your phone. The SLAM algorithm processes laser data hundreds of times per second. Don't interfere with the device at this point: don't pick it up or move the furniture.
If a Xiaomi robot vacuum cleaner encounters a difficult obstacle, it will try to get around it. If it completes the cycle successfully, it will return to base and the map will be automatically stored in memory. This usually takes one full cleaning time, but for large areas it may take several cycles to recharge.
Editing and separating rooms
Once the primary circuit is ready, it often turns out that the algorithm has merged the kitchen and living room into one large room or misdefined the corridor boundaries. To fix, go to the map settings in the application and select edit mode.
The separation function allows you to draw a virtual line where a wall or doorway should be, and click on the separation icon, swipe across the screen through the desired area, and confirm the action, and the robot will perceive this as a physical barrier and in the future will remove these areas independently.
- π Unification: If a robot has split one room into two parts, use a fusion tool to erase the extra partition.
- π« Virtual Walls: Draw red lines or areas where the robot should not go (e.g. around a flower tray or a cat bowl).
- π§Ή Zoning: Assign names to rooms (Kitchen, Bedroom) so you can only run cleaning in specific locations through voice commands.
The accuracy of the separation affects the cleaning statistics, so if the zones are not delimited, you can't adjust the suction power of the living room carpet to the tiles in the hallway, and the right rooms allow you to flexibly manage cleaning scenarios.
What to do if the lines are not saved?
Configure virtual restrictions and zones
One of the most useful features is the creation of no-go zones. Unlike physical magnetic tapes that need to be glued to the floor, virtual walls are created software, and this is especially true for Xiaomi Vacuum Mop models, which can unwelcomely wet carpets when wet cleaning is enabled.
You can create a "No Mop" zone on top of the carpet, and the robot vacuums the area, but it won't go out with a wet cloth, and it's also convenient to mark the places where the chairs are thin, or where the curtains are hanging, so you don't have to go in there to avoid getting confused.
| Type of restriction | Function | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual Wall (Line) | Total travel ban | Enclosing entire rooms or dangerous areas |
| No-go zone (Square) | No entry inside | Around specific objects (vases, wires) |
| No-Mop Zone | Banning wet cleaning | On carpets, palazzos and sensitive coatings |
| Extensive cleaning area | Double aisle and max power. | In places of accumulation of dirt at the front door |
Using infrared sensors combined with software constraints is the best thing to do, but remember that virtual boundaries are only visible to the robot itself and in the application; if you move the base to another location, all the zones will shift relative to the walls, and you'll have to draw them again.

Save a few cards if you have a two-level apartment or periodically re-locate the base.
Keeping several maps and working with floors
Owners of country houses or large open-plan apartments may need to store multiple maps. Modern versions of Xiaomi firmware allow you to save up to 4-5 different floor plans. This eliminates the need to rebuild the map every time you move the robot to another floor.
To save your current map, make sure it's fully built and edited. From the map management menu, select "Save" or "Rename" option. When you move the device to a new floor, start a new cleaning operation, and the robot will realize that the environment has changed and suggest creating a new map while saving the previous one in the archive.
It's important to remember the base. For multiple cards, the dock should be moved with the robot. If the base is on the first floor and the robot is on the second floor, it won't automatically return to charging or resume cleaning after recharging (Resume function), because it will lose its binding to the base coordinates.
β οΈ Warning: When switching between saved maps, make sure the furniture in the room is about the same as when building the corresponding map.Severe changes in the interior can disorient the navigation system.
Typical problems and their solution
Even the smartest robots, such as the Xiaomi Robot Vacuum S10 or Mop 2 Ultra, can face challenges. Often users complain of a map splitting, where one room is displayed as two separate parts, which occurs if the robot loses orientation and decides that it is in a new place.
Another common problem is the incorrect display of walls, mirrors, glass doors and black glossy surfaces absorb or distort the laser beam, in which case the robot may "not see" the wall and try to drive through it, or, conversely, draw phantom obstacles in the middle of the room.
- π Positioning failure: If the robot spins in place, wipe the laser rangefinder window with a soft dry cloth.
- π Loss of communication: Make sure the Wi-Fi signal is stable in the cleaning area, especially if the router is far away.
- πΊοΈ Displacement of the map: If the card gradually "goes away" to the side, check whether the base is not on an uneven surface or a slippery carpet.
Most software glitches are solved by completely resetting the map and building a new one from scratch, and sometimes you need to update the deviceβs firmware through the app, as manufacturers are constantly releasing patches that improve navigation and obstacle recognition algorithms.

Regular cleaning of sensors and wheels is key to accurate mapping, and sensor dust is a major cause of navigational errors and "stupid" robot behavior.
