Why the map is so important to a robot vacuum cleaner β and what happens if it is not configured correctly
Xiaomiβs robot vacuum cleaners (including Mi Robot Vacuum, Roborock S7, Xiaomi Mop 2 Pro, and others) use laser rangefinders (LDS) or cameras to scan the room. Without an accurate map, the device moves chaoticly, spends more time cleaning and skips contaminated areas. A properly constructed map allows:
Optimize the route: the robot bypasses the room on the shortest path, saving battery power.
Separate rooms: You can set different cleaning settings for the kitchen, bedroom or corridor.
Avoid obstacles: the device remembers the location of furniture, rapids and forbidden areas.
However, many users face problems: the map is not fully built, rooms are not defined correctly, or the robot is βlostβ after rearranging the furniture. In this article, we will analyze the step-by-step algorithm for building a map, typical errors and ways to correct them, from basic configuration to advanced features like Zone Cleaning and Multi-Card Plans.
Preparation of the room: what to do before the first launch
Before turning on the robot, check the room for compliance with three key conditions:
- π Lighting: LDS-The robot sensor doesn't work well in the dark. Turn on the lights or provide natural light (especially important for models with cameras, such as Roborock). S7 MaxV).
- πͺ Free passage: remove wires, small objects (socks, toys), lift curtains and fringed mats from the floor - they can block sensors.
- ποΈ Furniture: Do not move large objects (sofas, tables) during the first scan - this knocks the algorithm of map construction.
Pay attention to the floor covering:
- β Suitable: laminate, tiles, linoleum, short-tail carpets.
- β Problems will cause: high pile (robot will get stuck), black or mirrored surfaces (sensors do not recognize them as gender).
β οΈ Warning: If there are glass partitions in the room (such as a shower cabin), paste them with paint tape while scanning.

Step-by-step: how to build a map in the Mi application Home/Roborock
The process of building a map is the same for most Xiaomi/Roborock models, but there are nuances depending on the firmware.Using the official Mi Home app (for older models) or Roborock (for newer ones).
- Connect the robot to Wi-Fi: Launch the app, add the device via Add (+) β Robot vacuum cleaner. Make sure the network is running at 2.4 GHz (5 GHz not supported!).
- Run the first scan: Place the robot on the dock, click Start Cleaning in the app. Select Full Cleanup (not Zone or Point!) mode.
- Wait until it's finished: The robot will spiral around the room and then perimeter. Don't interrupt the process and don't carry the robot manually, which will lead to an error. Incomplete map. Scan time: 15-40 minutes (depending on the area).
- Save the card: Once you have finished cleaning, the Map tab will appear in the app. Click Save (in Mi Home) or Save as a new plan (in Roborock).
If the map is curved (rooms are not separated, walls are wavey), run a re-scan in Map mode (available in Roborock via Settings β Map β Edit β Remodel the map).
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The map is not saved. | Weak Wi-Fi signal, low battery charge | Reboot the robot, check the network connection |
| Rooms are not shared | There are no doors or thresholds | Add virtual walls to the map editor |
| Robot 'lost' after reboot | Failure of the gyroscope or LDS-sensor | Update the firmware, perform calibration (see section below) |
π‘
If the robot is constantly "stuck" in one place during the scan, check the height of the thresholds. the maximum height overcome for most models is 2 cm.
Map Editing: Rooms Separation, Virtual Walls and No-Go Zones
Once you've built the base card, you need to optimize it. In the Roborock or Mi Home app, open the Map tab and use the tools:
- π Rooms separation: click Edit β Separate rooms. Line doorways, which will allow you to set different cleaning settings for each area (e.g., enhanced cleaning in the kitchen).
- π« No-go zones: circle areas where the robot cannot enter (animal food, children's toys), Roborock has no-cleaning zones and wash-only zones (for models with wet cleaning function).
- π Virtual Walls: If the robot tries to drive into narrow passages (for example, between the legs of a chair), add a Virtual Wall via Add β Line.
For multi-card models (such as the Roborock S7):
- Create separate maps for each floor.
- In the robot settings, select Multi-Card Plans β Add a new floor.
- When moving the robot to another floor, it will automatically switch to the corresponding map.
β οΈ Attention: Virtual walls and no-go zones are not saved when you reset the robot to the factory settings. Take a screenshot of the map in the application or export it through Settings β Map. β Exports (available at Roborock).

Calibration of sensors: what to do if the robot βfloatsβ or builds a map of the curve
If the robot is not accurately positioned (e.g., it is displaced 10 to 20 cm from the actual route), the problem may be:
- π Battery discharge (below 20% charge sensors are unstable).
- π Contaminated. LDS-sensor (dust on the lens distorts the laser beam).
- π‘ External interference (sunlight, mirror reflections).
How to perform calibration:
- Clean it up. LDS-soft brush sensor (do not use wet wipes!).
- Place the robot on a flat surface (for example, on a table).
- In the app, go to Settings β General β Calibration of the gyroscope.
- Follow the instructions on the screen (the robot will rotate in place).
For models with cameras (Roborock S7 MaxV):
- Check the cleanliness of the lens (wipe with a dry microfiber).
- Calibrate the camera through Settings β Camera β Calibration.
π‘
Calibration of sensors is recommended after updating the firmware or if the robot began to βloseβ after moving to a new place.
Advanced features: Zone cleaning, schedule and smart home integration
After setting up the basic map, you can use advanced features:
- π Area cleaning: in the app circle the desired area and select Area cleaning. Useful for local cleaning (for example, under the dining table).
- π Schedule: set up automatic day-of-week cleaning. To save battery, select a time when you're not home.
- π€ Integration with Google Assistant/Alice: Connect the robot to the voice assistant via Settings β Voice assistant. Teams: "Start cleaning," "Go back to baseΒ».
For models with a function of floor washing (Roborock S7, Xiaomi Mop 2 Pro):
- Set up the washing intensity for different rooms (e.g., increased washing in the kitchen).
- Use the Mop Raise for carpets (the robot will automatically lift the rag on the pile surfaces).
β οΈ Warning: When setting your schedule, consider charging times. If the robot doesn't have time to return to base before the next cleaning, it will start with the current charge, which will reduce the cleaning area.
Typical mistakes and their solutions: from βinvisibleβ walls to map failures
Even after you set it up properly, you can have problems.
| Symptoms. | Probable cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Map is built with "teared" lines | Mud on LDS-sensor or rapid movement of the robot | Clean the sensor, start a re-scan in Quiet Cleaning mode |
| Robot can't see the wall | Too dark or shiny surfaces | Plug light tape on the walls (5-10 cm wide) at the sensor level |
| The card is reset after the update | Firmware failure or conflict with Xiaomi servers | Roll back the firmware to the previous version or wait for the patch |
| Robot gets stuck in one place | Low charge or obstacle not visible by sensors | Check the battery, add a virtual wall in the problem area |
If the robot loses the card after returning to the base:
- Check the location of the dock: it should stand in the corner, at a distance of at least 0.5 m from the walls and 1.5 m from large objects.
- Update the firmware through Settings β Software update.
- Reset the card settings: Settings β Map β Reset the card (data will be lost!).
π‘
If the robot has become worse to build a map after updating the firmware, try to roll back to the previous version. To do this, download the old firmware from the Roborock forum and manually stitch through Settings β Update β Local file.
