Why Change Your Voice and What You Need to Know Before Starting
Voice prompts from Xiaomiโs robot vacuum cleaner are not only a convenience, but also a way to personalize the device. Standard Chinese or English voiceovers can be annoying, confusing or simply out of step with your smartphoneโs interface language. Fortunately, most Mi Robot Vacuum models (including the S5/S6/S7, 1C/1T, Mop 2 Pro series, and others) support voice change through the official Mi Home app.
However, there are nuances: not all models allow you to choose Russian, some are limited to Chinese, English and a pair of European languages. In addition, after changing the region in the application (for example, to China Mainland for advanced features), available voices may change. In this article, we will discuss all ways to change voiceovers, including hidden settings and circumventing restrictions.
Before you start, make sure that:
- ๐ฑ You have the latest Mi Home (or Xiaomi Home for new models) installed)
- ๐ Robot vacuum cleaner connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the phone
- ๐ The device is charged at least 20% (to avoid failures)
- ๐ Mi Account is tied to the right region (more on this below)
Important: Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Lite and Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop Essential models do not support voice change via the app โ they will require an alternative method (Section 5).
Method 1: Change voice through the official Mi Home app
This is the easiest and safest method that works for most models, and the instructions are relevant for Mi Home 6.0 and later.
- Open Mi Home and select your robot vacuum cleaner on the home screen.
- Tap the three-point menu (โฎ) top-right.
- Go to Settings โ Voice prompts (or Voice Pack in English).
- In the list of available languages, select the desired one (for example, Russian, English (US/UK), Chinese).
- Confirm voice uploads โ the process can take up to 5 minutes depending on internet speed.
- After installation, restart the vacuum cleaner (reboot button in settings or physical button on the case).
If there is no Russian language on the list, check the region of your account:
- ๐ Russian voice is available for most models.
- ๐จ๐ณ China Mainland โ maximum choice of votes, but you will need to change the server (instruction in section 3).
- ๐ช๐บ Europe โ limited set (English, German, Spanish).
Method 2: Manually Adding a Voice Packet Through Files
If the Mi Home doesnโt have the language you want, you can download the voice packet manually, which works for Mi Home Firmware models (e.g. Mi Robot Vacuum S5/S6).
You'll need:
- ๐ Voice package in.mpk format (can be found on forums) 4PDA Xiaomi Community).
- ๐ฑ Mi Home app with developer rights (included in account settings).
- ๐ Robot vacuum cleaner connected to the same network as the phone.
Steps:
- Download the voice file (for example, ru_RU.mpk for Russian by phone.
- In Mi Home, go to Settings โ About Device โ The firmware version and tap 5 times on the version number to activate the developer mode.
- Return to the main menu, now there will be an option Additional โ Download voice packet.
- Select the downloaded file and wait for the installation to be completed (the robot will emit an audible signal).
- Reset the device.
Download.mpk file for your model|Enable the Developer Mode in Mi Home|Connect the vacuum cleaner and phone to the same network|Check the battery power of the robot (minimum 20%)|Make a backup copy of settings (optional)-->
Warning: a mismatch in the voice packet of the firmware version may cause crashes, such as a file for S5 not suitable for S7.
Method 3: Change the account region for extended voices
Some voices (e.g., female Chinese or alternative English) are only available when selecting the China Mainland region.
- Open Mi Home and go to the profile (account icon).
- Slip around the current region (e.g. Russia) and select China Mainland.
- Confirm the shift - the application will restart.
- After changing the region, add the robot vacuum cleaner to the application again (it will disappear from the list of devices).
- Now in the voice settings will be additional options.
โ ๏ธ Note: if you change region to China Mainland, some features (e.g. integration with Google Assistant or Alice) may stop working, and you will need to link a Chinese phone number or use bypass authorization methods.
| Region in Mi Home | Available voices | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Russia | Russian, English (US) | No. |
| China Mainland | Chinese (husband/wife), English (UK/US), Japanese | I need Chinese. SIM for SMS-confirmation |
| Europe | English, German, Spanish, French | No Russian. |
| Singapore | English (UK), Chinese | Limited functionality |
Method 4: Alternative Voice Control Applications
If Mi Home doesnโt allow you to change your voice, you can use third-party utilities, for example, the Robot Vacuum Controller app (available on GitHub) supports manually downloading voice packets for many Xiaomi models.
Instructions:
- ๐ฅ Download. APK-file from the official repository.
- ๐ Allow installation from unknown sources in phone settings.
- ๐ค Connect to the robot vacuum cleaner via the local network (enter IP-address).
- ๐ฃ๏ธ In the Voice section, select Custom Voice Pack and download the.mpk file.
โ ๏ธ Warning: Third-party apps may require root access on your phone or special permissions, and do not use them unless you are sure of the security of the source.

Method 5: Bypassing the restrictions for models without voice change support
For low-end models like the Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Lite or Essential, there is no official way to change voice, but there is a workaround through the firmware of alternative software (such as Valetudo).
Steps:
- Get root access to the robot vacuum cleaner (instructions are available on XDA Developers).
- Install Valetudo - open firmware for robot vacuum cleaners.
- In the Valetudo web interface, go to Settings โ Voice Pack.
- Download the custom voice packet (.wav or.mp3) format.
Risks:
- ๐จ Loss of warranty (when unlocking the bootloader).
- ๐ง Possible failures in the operation of sensors.
- ๐ Difficulty rolling back to stock firmware.
๐ก
Before firmware, back up the original software via adb backup or specialized utilities like MiFlash.
Frequent Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Even when following instructions, users face problems, and here are the most common ones:
- ๐ Voice unchanged after installation: restart robot vacuum cleaner holding power button for 10 seconds.
- ๐ No language in the list: check your account region or use manual download (Those 2).
- โ๏ธ Error "Incompatible voice packet": download the file corresponding to the firmware version of your model.
- ๐ฑ Mi Home app doesnโt see robot: reset the device to factory settings (Reset button on the case).
If the robot begins to behave unstable after changing its voice (for example, does not respond to commands or constantly reboots), reset via Settings โ Reset to factory in Mi Home.
๐ก
Before any manipulation of firmware or voice packets, check the compatibility of files with your robot vacuum model. The wrong package can lead to the "bricking" of the device.
