Why do Aqara switches require zero wire β and what if there isnβt one?
Smart switches Xiaomi Aqara radically different from the classic mechanical: they require constant power to work Wi-Fi/Bluetooth-In most cases, the manufacturer insists on the presence of zero wire (N) in the mounting box - this is prescribed in the official instructions for the Aqara models. H1 (WS-EUK01), D1 (WS-EUK02) or T1 (WS-EUK04). But what if there is no zero in your electrical wiring?
The problem is relevant for Soviet-built homes, where the switch boxes only had phase (L) and dial-up wire to the lamp. Without zero, the smart switch won't be able to connect to the Mi Home or Aqara Home network, which means it will lose all the meaning of smart control. But there are workarounds, from using external power supplies to modifying the connection circuit. In this article, we'll look at all the working ways of connecting Aqara without zero, including those that are not mentioned in the official documentation.
Aqara models that can be connected without zero (and those that canβt)
Not all Aqara smart switches are equally wiring-intensive.
- π΄ Require zero necessarily: Aqara H1 (WS-EUK01), D1 (WS-EUK02), T1 (WS-EUK04) β These models have built-in Wi-Fi/Bluetooth-module that needs constant power 220V.
- π‘ Can work without zero with reservations: Aqara Opple (with a mechanical switch) - here the smart module is powered by a short-term pulse when pressed, but the functionality is limited.
- π’ No need for zero: Aqara Wireless Mini Switch (WXKG03LM) β It is a wireless button switch that runs on a battery and controls devices via Zigbee.
If you have a model from the red group, but there is no zero in the box, you have to use one of the alternative solutions (more on them). Importantly, Aqara does not guarantee stable operation under abnormal connection schemes, so you perform all the manipulations at your own risk.
Method 1: Connecting via an external power supply (the most reliable option)
This method involves the use of an additional power source. 220V β 5V/12B, which will supply voltage to the Aqara switch through phase and artificially created zero:
- π Power supply (e.g. Mean Well) LRS-35-5 or any other 5V/1And).
- π§ A terminal pad for connecting wires.
- π Corrugated or cable channel for neat stowage of wires.
Connection diagram:
- Turn off the machine on the shield and check the lack of voltage with the indicator screwdriver.
- Connect the power supply to phase (L) and ground (PE) β the latter will act as a βzeroβ for the switch.
- Output +5V and GND from the power supply to the N and L terminals on the Aqara switch.
- Phase from the lamp connect to the output of the switch (L1).
β οΈ Attention: Using grounding as zero is a temporary solution. For permanent operation, it is recommended to extend a separate zero wire from the junction box or use a galvanic junction power supply unit.

Method 2: Using a capacitor to create a βvirtual zeroβ
This method is suitable for experienced electricians and is based on the use of a non-polar capacitor (e.g. 0.47 ΞΌF Γ 400V), which creates a phase shift, allowing the Aqara switch to be powered.
- Connect the capacitor between phase (L) and dial-up wire (L1).
- To the switch terminal N connect the same dial-up wire (L1).
- Phase (L) connect to the corresponding terminal on the switch.
| Capacitor parameter | Meaning | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 0.33-0.47 ΞΌF | Less than 0.33 ΞΌF β the switch will not turn on, more than 0.47 ΞΌF β overheating is possible |
| Tension. | 400B and higher | The capacitor must withstand voltage surges in the network |
| Type | Nonpolar (MKP, metal film) | Polar capacitors explode at reverse polarity! |
β οΈ Attention: This circuit may cause LED lights to flicker due to current flowing through the condenser. LED-lamps with a capacity of less than 10W method is not recommended.
Why not use a polar capacitor?
Method 3: Connecting via relay or smart socket
If you don't want to interfere with the wiring, you can use an intermediate relay or a Xiaomi smart socket as a power source for the switch.
- Install a Xiaomi smart outlet (such as Mi Smart Plug) in the nearest outlet.
- Connect to it the power supply 5B (from the old charger).
- Output the wires from the power supply (+5V and GND) to the terminals L and N of the Aqara switch.
- Phase on the lamp connect to the output of the switch (L1).
Advantages of the method:
- β No interference with stationary wiring.
- β You can quickly turn off the power switch through the Mi Home app.
- β Suitable for rented housing.
Disadvantages:
- β Dependence on the stability of Wi-Fi (if the socket is disconnected from the network, the switch will also stop working).
- β Additional wires that need to be carefully hidden.
π‘
If you use a smart outlet as a power source, set up a separate machine for it in the Mi Home app so that you do not accidentally turn off the switch along with other devices.
Method 4: Replacement with Aqara wireless switch (if wiring does not allow)
If all of the above methods seem too complex or risky, consider using Aqara wireless switches that donβt require a 220B connection.
- π Aqara Wireless Mini Switch (WXKG03LM) β battery-powered CR2032, Manages devices on Zigbee.
- π Aqara Opple 6-Button Switch (WXCJKG13LM) β multi-button switch with mechanical switch, does not require zero.
How it works:
- Install a wireless switch on the wall (on double-sided scotch or screws).
- Connect it to the Aqara Hub (such as M2 or E1).
- Set up automation in Mi Home: for example, one tap β turn on the light, double β turn off.
- To control the lamp, use a smart socket or Aqara relay (such as T1 Relay) hidden behind the ceiling.
β οΈ Warning: Wireless switches have no physical connection to the lamp, so if you disconnect the Aqara Hub from the Internet, you will not be able to control the lights. ~0.5-1 second when switched on.
Frequent Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
When connecting an Aqara switch without zero, users often make critical errors that lead to a device failure or even fire.
- π₯ Use of polar capacitor β ignition.
- β‘ Phase connection to terminal N β burns off the circuit breaker.
- π‘ Ignoring flickering LED-lamp β capacitor circuit can reduce the life of LEDs 2-3 times.
- π΅ Lack of grounding when using a power supply unit β electrocution.
To avoid problems, always:
- Check the connection circuit with the multimeter before the voltage is applied.
- Use only certified components (power supplies, capacitors).
- For LED-lamps install a throttle or driver to smooth out pulsations.
π‘
If the Aqara switch is not detected in the Mi Home app after the connection, check the polarity of the power supply and voltage at the terminals with a multimeter. Most often the problem lies in insufficient current (less than 0.5A) or a contact break.
