Introduction: What to Know Before Connecting
The Xiaomi Vacuum S20 is one of the most popular robot vacuum cleaners in Xiaomiβs smart appliance line, combining powerful suction (up to 2700 Pa), laser navigation LDS and support for voice assistants. However, its first connection often raises questions among users, especially if it comes to versions for the Chinese market (CN) or global firmware. In this article, we will analyze the process Step-by-step, from unpacking to setting up a cleaning schedule.
It's important to remember that the Vacuum S20 runs through the Mi Home app (or Xiaomi Home in newer versions), and it works well depending on your account region, the robot's firmware version, and even the router model. If you bought a device in China or on AliExpress, you might have to change the region in the app or update the firmware manually. We'll look at all of these nuances.
Before you start, check the package: the box should be the robot itself, the charging station, the power supply, cable, a spare filter and instructions (often in Chinese). If something is missing, this is an excuse to contact the seller. Also prepare a smartphone with Android 6.0+ or iOS 10.0+ and a stable connection to Wi-Fi at 2.4 GHz (the robot does not support 5 GHz).
Step 1: Installation of the charging station and first activation
Start by placing a charging station. This is critical to the robot's performance: if the station is in an uncomfortable place, the Vacuum S20 may not find it or encounter obstacles along the way.
- π Distance from the walls: at least 0.5 m on each side and 1.5 m in front. The robot needs space to maneuver.
- π« Avoid: direct sunlight, heat sources (batteries), wet areas (bathroom, kitchen next to sink).
- π The socket should be easily accessible, but the cable should not lie in the way of the robot.
- πͺ Surface: flat, hard (tile, laminate, parquet) and high-pile carpets can block infrared sensors.
Once the station is installed, plug the power supply into the outlet. Put the robot on the station: it should emit an audible signal and start charging (the indicator on the body flashes white). If the indicator is red or orange, check the contacts on the station and the robot (they should be clean).
π‘
If the robot doesnβt start charging, try lifting it up and putting it back on the station β sometimes the contacts donβt touch because of dust or uneven surfaces.
The first turn on takes 3-5 minutes, during which time the robot conducts self-testing: checks the sensors, motors and connection to the station. Do not interrupt the process - wait until the indicator is blue (ready to go) or green (fully charged).
Step 2: Install Mi Home and create an account
To manage the Xiaomi Vacuum S20, you need the Mi Home app (or Xiaomi Home, the new name).
- π± Android: Google Play (official version only!).
- π iOS: App Store.
After installation, launch the application and create an account. Here it is important to choose the right region:
- π Russia/CIS: Choose Russia or Mainland China (if the Chinese version is a robot).
- β οΈ Problem: If the robot is bought in China and you choose Russia, it may not appear in the list of devices.
If you already have a Xiaomi account, log in. After you log in in at the top right corner, tap the avatar. β Settings β Region and select China (for the purpose of CN-If you change the region, all the attached devices will disappear from the list, you will have to add them again!
Step 3: Connecting the robot to Wi-Fi
Now, to the most critical step, connecting the Vacuum S20 to your Wi-Fi network, make sure that:
- πΆ The network operates at 2.4 GHz (the robot does not support 5 GHz).
- π Wi-Fi passwords contain only Latin characters and numbers (Cyrillic is not supported!).
- π΅ Turn it off. VPN Proxies β they can block the connection to Xiaomi servers.
Instructions for connection:
- Turn on the robot (button on the body), wait for the beep and the blue indicator.
- In the Mi Home app, click + (add device) β select Cleanup β Robot vacuum cleaner β Xiaomi Vacuum S20.
- Click Next and follow the instructions on the screen. The app will prompt you to connect to the robot's time network (the name will be like, "Time Network"). Xiaomi_Vacuum_XXXX).
- Once connected, go back to Mi Home and select your 2.4GHz home network, enter your password.
- Wait until the process is complete (the robot will emit a long beep).
If the connection is suspended during the Data Saving stage:
- π Reboot the robot (hold the power button for 10 seconds).
- π‘ Reboot the router.
- π± Remove the robot from the device list in Mi Home and repeat the process.
Make sure the 2.4 GHz network

Step 4: Update the firmware (if required)
After the first connection, Mi Home may offer to update the firmware of the robot.
- π¦ You. CN-version of the robot, and the region in the application is Russia.
- β οΈ The robot is unstable (losing communication, not building a map).
- π A new version with error corrections is available.
Updating process:
- In the robot card in Mi Home, click βοΈ Settings β Firmware update.
- If the update is available, click Update and wait until it is completed (the robot will restart).

| Update "hangs" by 0% | Weak Wi-Fi signal | Bring the robot closer to the router |
| Update failed error | Incompatible firmware | Change the region in Mi Home to China |
Step 5: Set up the first cleaning and room map
Once connected and updated, the robot is ready for the first cleaning, but first you need to configure the map of the room:
- Put the robot in the charging station.
- In the Mi Home app, click Clean β Zone Cleaning or Complete Cleaning.
- The robot will start moving around the room, scanning the space with an LDS laser.
- Once you've finished cleaning, a map will appear in the app, and if it's not there, check if the Save Maps option is enabled in the robot's settings.
Tips for improving the map:
- πͺ Close the doors to other rooms so that the robot scans one area.
- πͺ Remove small objects (wires, toys) from the floor that may interfere with scanning.
- π¦ In dark rooms, turn on the lights β the laser sensor works better in good lighting.
If the map is curved or not saved:
β οΈ Warning: Reset the map in the robot settings (Settings) β Map. β Reset the card and start cleaning again. If the problem recurs, update the firmware or check if the router blocks the robotβs connection to Xiaomi servers (sometimes switching helps). DNS at 8.8.8.8).
