Modern cleaning gadgets make everyday life much easier, but their initial setup often raises questions from new owners. The Xiaomi Vacuum Mop Essential robot vacuum cleaner is one of the most popular models thanks to the balance of price and functionality. Proper integration of the device into the smart home ecosystem opens up access to advanced features that are not available with manual control.
The process of pairing a smartphone and a vacuum cleaner requires care, especially when choosing the region in the application and setting up the Wi-Fi network. Errors at this stage can lead to the fact that the device will not be visible to the phone or can not update the firmware. In this article, we will discuss each step in detail so that you can start your assistant in work without unnecessary difficulties.
Before you start manipulating, make sure you have a charged gadget and a stable Internet connection at hand. Connection is the foundation for further operation, so there is no rush here. We will consider not only the standard scenario, but also the possible problems that users face.
Preparation of the device and unpacking
The first thing you need to do is take all the components out of the box and release them from the protective films, and inside you'll find the robot itself, the charging station, the power supply, the cable, the dust container, and the other thing. HEPA-filter and wet cleaning wipe, it is important to remove all transport locks, if any, and check the integrity of the side brush.
Install the charging station in a place where there is free space on the sides (at least 0.5 meters) and in the front (up to 1.5 meters), this is necessary for a smooth exit and entry of the device to the base. The socket should be located so that the wire does not create obstacles, but allows the vacuum cleaner to easily find contacts for charging.

Once the base is set, place the robot on charge. To activate the battery and the system, you need to press two buttons on the top panel simultaneously for a few seconds until the indicator lights up. The display will report the current status: flashing white light means pairing mode, constant - readiness to work.
Installation and configuration of the Mi Home application
To manage Xiaomi’s smart app, you’ll need the official Mi Home app (or Xiaomi Home), which can be downloaded from Google Play for Android or the App Store for iOS. Once installed, start the program and create an account if you don’t already have one, or log in to an existing one.
The critical point is to choose a region when you sign in. If you choose the wrong country, you may not see your device in the list of available for add. For most devices shipped in the CIS, the region of Russia or China is suitable, but for global versions of Vacuum Mop Essential, you often need to choose the country indicated on the box or in the instructions.
⚠️ Note: If the robot is not in the application when selecting the region "Russia", try to change the region in the profile settings to "China". After adding the device, the region can be returned back, but the functionality may be limited.
Make sure your smartphone has geolocation (GPS) and Bluetooth enabled, which are necessary to first detect your device and give it your Wi-Fi network settings, and without GPS enabled, the search process can freeze during the scanning phase.
The process of pairing with a Wi-Fi network
In the app's main menu, click on the plus in the upper right corner to add a new device. The system will automatically start scanning. If the Xiaomi Vacuum Mop Essential is in pairing mode (Wi-Fi flashes), it should appear in the list of Local Devices at the top of the screen.
If the automatic search didn’t work, manually select the device from the directory. Enter your Wi-Fi network name and password. Note that the robot only supports 2.4 GHz. If your router distributes 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz networks under one name, it can be difficult to temporarily split networks or use a 2.4 GHz guest network.
What to do if the 5 GHz network?
Once you enter the password, you'll start transmitting data. Hold your phone next to the vacuum cleaner. You may be asked to connect to the robot's temporary Wi-Fi network on your smartphone screen -- confirm this action. It takes 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
Successful connection will be confirmed by a voice message of the device (if the sound is turned on) and changing the color of the indicator to white. The application will appear a card of the device through which you can manage cleaning, build a map and adjust the schedule.
First start and calibration of the map
Once successfully added to the app, it is recommended that you start the first cleaning in Quiet or Standard mode. The robot must drive through the entire available area to build a map of the room. Do not interfere with it at this point: do not lift your hands, do not move the base, and do not close the doors to the rooms that should be on the map.
When you're navigating, a laser long-distance vehicle (LDS) scans the space, and a gyroscope tracks your movements. If you have a lot of mirrors or black surfaces in your home, it can behave strangely -- that's normal for optical navigation systems, but the Vacuum Mop Essential uses gyroscopic navigation, so it builds a map by sequentially circumnavigating the perimeter.

If the map is curved or broken, you can delete it in the map settings and start building again. To do this, go to the device settings, select Map, and click Delete Map. Then start a full cleaning so that the device scans the room again.
Wet cleaning setup
The Essential model supports wet wipe function, and you take out the dust collector and install a water container with a microfibre wipe fixed instead, and it's important to use only soft or distilled water to avoid scale on the pump and the appearance of scaling on the floor.
You can choose between low, medium and high water levels in the app, low enough for daily cleaning to just refresh the surface, and the robot can bypass carpets if they're not too high, but it's best to remove them before wet cleaning to avoid getting wet.

Use only special tools for robot vacuum cleaners if you want to add chemistry to the water. Conventional detergents can foam and damage the pump.
After each wet cleaning, be sure to remove the container, pour out the remaining water and dry the napkin. If you leave the water in the tank, you can get an unpleasant smell, and the membrane will get sour, which will lead to a failure of the water supply system.
Maintenance and regular cleaning
For long and efficient operation of the device, you need to regularly clean the main nodes. Every 2-3 days, empty the dust container and wipe the sensors on the case with a soft dry cloth. Clogged sensors can cause the robot to fall down stairs or get stuck.
The side brush and the main turbobrush should be cleaned of coiled hair and thread once a week. The main brush has removable covers on the ends, which makes it easier to extract garbage. The HEPA filter should be knocked out over the trash can, but not washed with water more than once a month, allowing it to dry completely before installation.
⚠️ Warning: Never run a robot with wet HEPA-Water can get into the engine, causing the electronics to break down and burn up. The filter will dry for at least 24 hours.
Also check the wheels and contact areas at the charging station, and if the contacts become oxidized or plaque, wipe them with an alcohol wipe, which will ensure stable charging of the battery and prolong its life.
