Xiaomiβs robot vacuum cleaners have long been an integral part of smart homes, but their first connection to the Mi Home ecosystem often raises questions among users. Even if you already have experience with the brandβs gadgets, vacuum synchronization may be different from the usual procedure for light bulbs or sensors. In this article, we will analyze all the stages of connection, from preparing the device to setting up a cleaning schedule, and also consider typical errors and how to solve them.
The feature of Xiaomi vacuum cleaners (including Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Pro, DreameBot D9 and others) is the use of a dual communication protocol: Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz + Bluetooth LE for initial configuration. This means that simply turning the device into a socket is not enough β you need to properly configure the network and the application itself. We will explain in detail how to avoid common problems, for example, when the vacuum cleaner is not detected in the Mi Home despite repeated attempts to connect.
This article is relevant for Xiaomi vacuum cleaners of all generations, including budget and flagship models. If your device is released after 2020, the instruction will be 100% - older versions may require additional manipulation (we will also mention this).
1. Preparation of the vacuum cleaner and smartphone for connection
Before you start syncing, make sure both devices are ready for the procedure, and skipping this stage is the main cause of connection failures.
- π± Smartphone: Install the latest version of the Mi Home app (at least 6.5.400). For Android, download only from Google Play or APKMirror, for iOS - from the App Store. Older versions may not support new models of vacuum cleaners.
- π€ Vacuum: Charge the device to at least 20% (optimally 50%) and the battery may interrupt the setup process.
- πΆ Wi-Fi network: Xiaomi vacuum cleaners only work with 2.4GHz networks. If your router broadcasts in two bands (2.4GHz and 5GHz), temporarily turn off 5GHz or create a separate network for 2.4GHz.
- π Wi-Fi Password: Make sure that the network password does not contain Cyrillic characters or special characters (for example, #, $, %). Use only Latin and numbers.
If your vacuum cleaner has already been connected to another Mi Home account, reset to factory settings.
- Turn on the vacuum cleaner, holding the power button for 3-5 seconds.
- Press the Home and Power buttons for 10 seconds at the same time until you hear the beep.
- After resetting, the indicator flashes orange β this means that the device is ready for a new setup.
2. Step-by-step instructions for connecting to Mi Home
Now, to the basic process, follow the instructions strictly by step, and even one point can be missed, and you can get the error "Device failed to connect."
- Open Mi Home and log in to your account. Make sure the region in your profile is set to Russia (or your country), changing the region after connecting the device can lead to its unbundling!
- Click "+" β "Add device." In the search box, type the name of your model (e.g. Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Pro). If the model is not listed, select the Vacuum category.
- Choose your Wi-Fi network from the list. If you don't have a network, check that the router is on and broadcasting in the 2.4 GHz band.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password and wait until it appears. QR-smartphone-screen.
- Point the vacuum cleaner camera at QR-That's the code:

If the scanning stage QR-When the vacuum cleaner gives an error "I failed to connect", try it:
- π Reboot router and vacuum cleaner.
- π΅ Temporarily disable 5GHz on your router (even if you choose 2.4GHz, some routers automatically switch).
- π± Reinstall the Mi Home app (sometimes cache interferes with correct operation).
What to do if the vacuum cleaner does not scan QR-code?
3. Customization of the vacuum cleaner after connection
Successful connectivity is only half the battle, and you have to customize your device to fit your needs: create a map of the room, set a cleaning schedule, and activate additional functions.
First cleaning and mapping
After the connection, the vacuum cleaner will suggest you to perform the first cleaning.
- π Prepare the room: remove small objects (wires, toys, shoes) from the floor that may interfere with scanning.
- πͺ Close the doors to other rooms if you want the map to be created in stages.
- β‘ Do not interrupt the process: the first scan may take 15-30 minutes depending on the area.
When cleaning is complete, an interactive map will appear in the Mi Home app, which can:
- π Divide the room into zones (for example, the kitchen, the corridor).
- π« They will not be allowed to enter the forbidden areas).
- π Configure virtual walls (useful to restrict access to certain areas).
Cleaning schedule
To ensure that the vacuum cleaner works automatically:
- In Mi Home go to the section of the vacuum cleaner β Schedule.
- Click Add and select the days of the week.
- Set cleaning time (be aware that the vacuum cleaner will only start working if it is charged 80% or more).
- Select cleaning mode: Quiet for night cleaning; balanced for most cases; turbo for deep cleaning (consumes more battery).
π‘
If the vacuum cleaner is often lost during cleaning, activate the Improved Navigation option (available for LiDAR models) in the settings, which will increase the accuracy of the map, but slightly reduce battery life.
4. Typical errors and their solutions
Even with the right instructions, there can be failures, and we've collected some of the most common problems and ways to fix them.
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| I couldn't connect to the network. | The router runs in 5 GHz mode or uses a complex password. | Switch the router to 2.4 GHz, simplify the password (Latin + numbers only). |
| QR-code not scanned | Poor lighting, dirty vacuum cleaner chamber or old QR-code. | Wipe the vacuum cleaner camera, increase the brightness of the smartphone screen, or use manual connection mode. |
| The vacuum cleaner is off from Mi Home | Unstable Internet connection or failure of Xiaomi servers. | Reboot the router, check your smartphone's Internet connection, and if the problem recurs, reconnect the vacuum cleaner. |
| The map is not saved. | The vacuum cleaner did not complete the full cleaning cycle or the settings were lost. | Start cleaning again, making sure the battery is 50 percent+ charged. Once completed, check the map in the app. |
If none of these methods worked, try a full vacuum cleaner reset:
- Turn off the vacuum cleaner by holding the power button for 5 seconds.
- Press and hold the Home + Spot Cleaning buttons for 10 seconds.
- After the beep release the buttons - the vacuum cleaner will return to the factory settings.
β οΈ Note: When you integrate with Home Assistant or other systems through unofficial plugins, you risk losing your warranty.
7. Update firmware and reset settings
Regular firmware updates improve the vacuum cleaner by adding new cleaning modes, optimizing battery consumption and correcting errors.
- Open Mi Home and select your vacuum cleaner.
- Go to Settings β Update firmware.
- If a new version is available, click Update.
- Wait for the process to be completed (5-15 minutes) and don't turn off the vacuum cleaner or close the application!
If after the update the vacuum cleaner began to work worse (for example, worse builds a map or discharges quickly), you can roll back to the previous version.
- Contact Xiaomi support and request an old firmware for your model.
- Reset the vacuum cleaner to factory settings (as described above).
- Connect to the vacuum cleaner via Mi Home and manually download the old firmware (instructions will be in the support letter).
β οΈ Note: Do not install firmware from third-party developers (for example, from forums) 4PDA). This can cause the vacuum cleaner to break or the warranty to be lost.Use only official files from Xiaomi.
