Why Xiaomiβs robot vacuum cleaner may require a reboot
Xiaomiβs robot vacuum cleaners (including the Mi Robot Vacuum, Dreame, Viomi and Mijia) are complex devices with their own software, sensors and communication modules. Like any technology, they sometimes fail: they hang on a cleaning map, lose touch with the Mi Home app, spin on the spot or refuse to turn on at all. In 80% of cases, the reboot solves the problem, a procedure that resets temporary OS errors and restores performance.
But not all reboots are the same. For example, hard resets on Xiaomi models with laser rangefinder (LDS) can lead to loss of sensor calibration if done incorrectly. And soft restarts through the app often don't help with hardware freezes. In this article, we'll look at all the ways, from the safest to the radical, and also tell you when the reboot won't help and you'll need repairs.
Method 1: Soft reboot through the power button
The simplest and safest method that works on all models β from Mi Robot Vacuum 1 to DreameBot Z10 Pro. Suitable for eliminating small glitches: hanging in the application, Wi-Fi connection errors or incorrect display of cleaning status.
Instructions:
- π Find the power button on the vacuum cleaner body (usually located on the side or top under the lid).
- π Press and hold it for 10-15 seconds until you hear the beep (on new models β until the indicator flashes).
- π Release the button. The robot will turn off and automatically switch on again in 2-3 seconds.
If the vacuum cleaner does not respond to the hold of the button, check:
- π Is it connected to a charging station (some models block reboot during cleaning).
- π Battery level (at a charge below 10%, a soft restart may not work).
Method 2: Reboot with the Mi Home app
If the vacuum cleaner is connected to the Mi Home (or Xiaomi Home for European regions), it can be rebooted remotely, a method that is useful when the robot is far away (for example, on the second floor) or when the physical button is not available.
Step-by-step:
- Open the Mi Home app and select your vacuum cleaner from the device list.
- Go to Settings β General β Reboot (in English β Settings β General β Reboot).
- Confirm the action. The robot will turn off and turn on through ~20 seconds.
Check the connection of the vacuum cleaner to Wi-Fi
Make sure there are no synchronization errors in the application
Close the background apps on your phone (they may interfere with communications)
Connect your phone to the same Wi-Fi network as the vacuum cleaner-->
β οΈ Note: If after restarting through the application, the robot gives an error 51-00 (problem with the collision sensor, try to physically clean the front sensors of dust with a dry brush.
Method 3: Hard Reset β When nothing helps
Hard resetting returns the vacuum cleaner to factory settings, erasing all stored room maps, cleaning schedules, and suction settings, a method used in extreme cases:
- π€ The robot is constantly making a mistake. 10-00 (principal-fee).
- π Hanging in the loading phase (white light flashes, but cleaning does not begin).
- π‘ Complete loss of connection with the application after updating the firmware.
Instructions for most Xiaomi/Dreame models:
- Turn off the vacuum cleaner with a long press of the power button (10 seconds).
- Press and hold the power button and the Home button (or Spot Clean on older models) for 20 seconds.
- Release the buttons when the orange indicator lights up (in some models, white with a flash).
- Wait for the reboot (can take up to 2 minutes).
| Model vacuum cleaner | The button combination for Hard Reset | Sign of successful discharge |
|---|---|---|
| Mi Robot Vacuum 1/1S | Food + Home (15β20 seconds) | Orange indicator + sound signal |
| DreameBot D9/L10 | Power + Spot Clean (20 seconds) | White indicator flashes 3 times |
| Viomi V2/V3 | Food + Cleaning by zone (25 seconds) | Voice message "Reset successful" |
| Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 | Food + Pause (10 seconds β release β repeat) | The indicator turns red, then blue. |
β οΈ Note: After a hard reset will have to reset:
- π± Connect the vacuum cleaner to the Mi Home application (scanning required) QR-code).
- πΊοΈ Create a map of the room (the robot will lose all stored data).
- βοΈ Set up schedules and cleaning areas.
What to do if Hard Reset doesnβt work?
Method 4: Reboot by turning off the battery (for power users)
If the vacuum cleaner is completely silent (it doesn't respond to buttons, it doesn't turn on, it doesn't make sounds), sometimes it helps to physically turn off the battery, which requires disassembling the device and is only suitable for users with experience with electronics.
Step-by-step:
- Turn the vacuum cleaner over and remove the bottom cover (usually attached to 4-6 screws under the cross screwdriver).
- Carefully disconnect the battery connector from the motherboard (on most models it is indicated in red or orange).
- Wait 5 minutes (this is important β the capacitors should be completely discharged).
- Connect the battery back and collect the vacuum cleaner.
- Turn on the power button.
β οΈ Note: When disassembling Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum with laser rangefinder (LDS) Don't touch the sensor lens, it can disrupt its calibration. 09-00 (problem LDS), Professional recalibration will be required in the service.
π‘
Before disassembling, take a picture of the location of all the connectors and screws on the phone, which will help avoid errors in the reverse assembly and prevent damage to the board.
Method 5: Firmware recovery (if the reboot didnβt help)
If the vacuum cleaner turns on but doesn't work properly (e.g., doesn't build a map, doesn't respond to commands, or constantly resets the connection), the problem may be a damaged firmware, in which case the firmware will help to flash through official software.
This will require:
- π» Windows computer 7/10/11.
- π USB-Type-C cable (for new models) or USB-MicroUSB cable (for older models).
- π₯ The official utility MiRobot (download on the Xiaomi website).
Algorithm of action:
- Connect the vacuum cleaner to your computer with a cable (the port is usually located under the lid next to the power button).
- Run the MiRobot utility and select the model of your device.
- Click Check Version β Update Firmware and wait until the process is complete (donβt turn off the cable!).
- After the update, perform a soft reboot (method 1).
β οΈ Note: Do not use unofficial firmware from third resources β this can lead to the device locking (error) 30-00) Or sensors that are not working properly. 2β3 months and contain corrections of critical bugs.
π‘
Flashing is an extreme method. If the vacuum cleaner works but produces minor errors (for example, does not save cleaning areas), first try resetting the settings in the Mi Home app: Settings β Reset the map settings.
When a reboot won't help: signs of hardware malfunctions
Not all problems are solved by software methods. If after several attempts to restart the robot vacuum cleaner Xiaomi continues to work incorrectly, pay attention to the following signs of hardware breakdowns:
| Symptoms. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The robot is not charged, the indicator does not burn | Failure of the battery or charging station | Check the contacts, try another socket. If it doesn't work, replace the battery. |
| Persistent error 06-00 (side brush problem) | Pollution or breakage of the brush engine | Cleaning or replacing the brush |
| Robot moves in circles or can't build map | Damage to the gyroscope or LDS sensor | Diagnostics in the service (requires calibration or replacement of the sensor) |
| Excessive noise or vibration when working | Foreign object in turbine or wear of bearings | Disassembly and cleaning (or engine replacement) |
If you suspect a hardware breakdown, but are not sure about its cause, use the built-in diagnostics:
- Hold the Power + Home button for 5 seconds until you hear a double beep.
- The robot will voice an error code (e.g., "Error 12-00").
- Check the code against the official error table.
