EV owners often face the need to change their account, sell their device or switch to another smartphone. In the Xiaomi and Ninebot ecosystem, the process of untieing the scooter is not always obvious, since it is tied to the server part and is linked to a specific UID device. If you simply delete the application or change your phone, the scooter may remain locked for the new owner or not connect to a new account.
There are several ways to solve this problem, from standard removal through the menu to the use of engineering reset methods. The choice of the specific method depends on the model of your vehicle, the version of the firmware and the region to which the electric scooter was originally attached. In this article, we will discuss all options in detail, including the complex cases with the Chinese versions of devices.
Care should be taken to ensure safety before any manipulations are initiated. Incorrectly resetting the binding on some models can result in a complete locking of the controller, requiring service intervention. So follow the steps described below strictly and do not interrupt the flashing or reset process halfway.
Why you need to disconnect the scooter from the account
The main reason why you need to unplug is to sell the device, so as long as the scooter is on your Mi Home or Ninebot profile, the new owner won't be able to activate it on his phone, and the security system sees that the serial number is already registered, and blocks re-activation, which is designed to protect against theft, but it's uncomfortable with legal transfer of ownership.
Another common scenario is a change of region or account, where many users buy Chinese versions of scooters that require a change of region in the app to China, and if you decide to reflash the device to the global version or simply change the main Mi Account, the old binding will conflict with the new settings, in which case the server binding becomes an obstacle to normal operation.
There are also situations where an account has been hacked or access to the phone on which the initial activation was made is lost, in which case the standard methods may not work, and you will need to have a deeper intervention in the settings of the Bluetooth module and the memory of the controller. It is important to understand that the undocking is not just removing the device from the list, it is a command on the server about the change of ownership.
β οΈ Warning: If you buy a used scooter, always require the seller to demonstrate the detachment process in your presence.
Preparation for the unbundling: what to do before the beginning
Before you start manipulating the software, you need to make sure that the device is ready for the procedure. First of all, check the battery level. The process of detachment and possible flashing requires stable power, and if the battery runs out at a critical moment, the controller can fail. Charge the scooter to a minimum of 60-70%.
The second important step is to update the app to the latest version. Older versions of Mi Home or Ninebot may contain bugs that prevent you from correctly sending a command to the server about removing the device. Go to the app store and make sure you have an up-to-date build installed. It is also recommended to update the firmware of the scooter itself to the latest available version through the settings menu.
Remember to back up important data if it is stored in the deviceβs memory (such as travel history or custom brightness and recovery settings). Although personal data is not usually erased when uncoupled, resetting the Bluetooth module settings can result in paired connections being lost.
βοΈ Pre-uncoupling check
Make sure you remember the password from your Mi Account or Ninebot account. During the unbundling process, the system may request a re-authorization to verify the identity of the owner. If you forget the password, the process may be delayed indefinitely due to access restoration procedures.
The standard method of detachment through the Mi Home application
The easiest and safest way to unplug a device is to use the official menu in the app, which is suitable for most cases when you have access to an account to which the scooter is attached. Open the Mi Home app and go to the home page where all connected devices are displayed.
Find your scooter card in the list. It's usually a model name, like "Mi Electric Scooter." Click on it to enter the control interface. In the upper right corner of the screen, you'll see a three-dot icon or a gear, which is the device settings menu. Click on it.
In the menu that opens, scroll down to the bottom of the list, and it should have a button called Delete Device or Unbind, and when you click it, it will request confirmation of action, it's accidental deletion protection, and you confirm the operation, and the application will send a request to the Xiaomi Cloud server.
β οΈ Note: If the Remove button is inactive or not, it means that the device may be actively restricted or in rental/enterprise management mode.
Once the command is successfully executed, the scooter will emit an audible signal and its indicators may blink. In the application, the device will disappear from the list. Now you can try connecting it to a new account. If the scooter does not respond to the search for a new phone, you may need to reboot.
The Ninebot (Segway-Ninebot) application
Many of Xiaomi's scooters (especially the Pro, Essential and Max series) are actually manufactured by Segway-Ninebot and controlled through their proprietary app. The logic of the junction is similar here, but the interface is different. Launch the Ninebot app and log in to your profile.
Select your scooter from the list of devices. In the main control menu, find the settings icon (usually the gear in the corner). In the settings menu, look for "Scooter settings" or "About the device." There should be an option "Unbind Scooter".
The system will alert you that once the trip history is unplugged, the device will be available to pair with another phone. Confirm. Unlike the Mi Home, this can take a little longer to process because of the security certificates.
