Xiaomiβs robot vacuum cleaners have gained popularity due to their combination of affordable prices, high functionality and integration with the smart home ecosystem, but many users face a problem: after buying the device, the device speaks Chinese or English, and the Mi Home app menu is displayed in in an incomprehensible language, which creates discomfort when setting up and using it daily.
Fortunately, you can change the interface language to Russian yourself, and you don't have to be a techie. Most of the time, just a few clicks in a mobile app. But there's a nuance: not all models support Russian out of the box, and some will require additional regional adjustment. In this article, we'll look at all the possible ways to change the language, from basic through Mi Home to alternative methods for "resistant" devices.
Please note: the instruction is relevant for robot vacuum cleaners of the brands Xiaomi, Dreame, Viomi and others working through the Mi Home or Xiaomi Home app. If your model uses other software (for example, Roborock with a proprietary application), the process may be different β we will also mention this.
Why does Xiaomi not switch to Russian?
Before you start setting up, it's important to understand the causes of the problem, and there are several, and each needs its own solution:
- π Mi Home is the wrong region, the app automatically determines the interface language by country of your account, and if you are registered in China or the United States, Russian may not be available.
- π€ Older versions of software often do not support localization in Russian, especially in models released before 2020.
- π± Inconsistency of the application version in some regions (e.g. in the EU-Mi Home version: Russian language hidden in settings.
- π§ Hardware restrictions. Cheap ones. OEM-Models (e.g. some Viomi or Dreame) may not have Russian localization in principle.
The most common reason is the first item: Even if you bought a vacuum cleaner in Russia, the seller could tie it to a Chinese server to bypass regional restrictions, in which case changing the language through the standard menu will not work, and you will need to reconfigure the account region.
Preparing for a Language Change: What to Do in advance
Before you change your language, follow a few steps that will save time and prevent common mistakes:
- Update the Mi Home app to the latest version via Google Play or the App Store. Outdated versions may not show Russian in the list.
If your vacuum cleaner was previously linked to another account (such as a salesperson), reset it to the factory settings.
- Press and hold the power button on the vacuum cleaner body for 10 seconds until you hear the beep.
- Wait until the indicator starts flashing orange, which means that the device is ready for a new binding.
βοΈ Preparation for language change
If the vacuum cleaner does not appear in the list of available devices after reset, try:
- π Reboot the router and smartphone.
- πΆ Switch Wi-Fi to 2.4 GHz (Xiaomi vacuum cleaners do not support 5 GHz).
- π± Enable geolocation on the phone β this is required to link to the region.
Method 1: Change language through Mi Home settings (main method)
This is the easiest and most versatile method that works for most models.
- Open the Mi Home app and go to the Profile tab (the human icon in the lower right corner).
If the language of the device is not on the menu, then your model does not support changing the language through the application, in which case, go to Method 2.
What to do if the vacuum cleaner speaks Chinese after changing the language?
Important! After changing the language, some voice commands (e.g., "Start cleaning") may sound in English. This is normal - not all models have full Russian voiceover. The main menu and notifications in the app will be in Russian.
Method 2: Change the region of the Mi Home account (for "Chinese" vacuum cleaners)
If your vacuum cleaner was originally tied to a Chinese server (for example, bought on AliExpress or in a Chinese store), changing the language through settings may not work, in which case you need to switch the account region to Russia or Europe.
β οΈ Attention! The region change will detach all Xiaomi devices from your account, and after the procedure, they will have to be reconnected. If you have many gadgets (lamps, sensors, speakers), save their settings in advance or back up through Settings. β Backup.
Instructions for changing the region:
- Open Mi Home and go to Profile β Settings (cog icon).
If there is no Russian language after the change of the region, try:
- π Choose another region (for example, Ukraine or Kazakhstan β there is also Russian localization).
- π± Install an alternative version of Mi Home (e.g. Mi Home) EU APKMirror).
- π§ Update the vacuum cleaner firmware manually (more about this in the next section).
π‘
If the vacuum cleaner stopped connecting to Wi-Fi after changing the region, check if your router supports IEEE 802.11 b/g/n at 2.4 GHz. Some Chinese models do not work with modern 802.11ac or Wi-Fi 6 standards.
Method 3: Update firmware to add Russian
If the first two didnβt work, the problem could be with outdated firmware: Many Xiaomi models (especially releases before 2021) didnβt originally have Russian localization, but it was added in later updates.
- Connect the vacuum cleaner to the charging station and make sure the charge level is not below 80%.
- Open Mi Home, select your vacuum cleaner and go to Settings β About the device.
- Slip on the item Firmware Update.
- If a new version is available, click Update and wait for the process to complete (10-30 minutes).
- After the update, restart the vacuum cleaner (turn off and turn on the button on the case).
If the automatic update doesn't find new versions, you can try the manual firmware.
- π Find the right firmware for your model in the forums (for example, 4PDA Xiaomi Community).
- π Download the firmware file (usually has the.pkg extension).
- π± Connect the vacuum cleaner to the PC through USB (If the model supports this method, use Mi Home for local installation.
β οΈ Attention! Manual firmware updates may result in a loss of warranty or device failure if the wrong version is selected. Do this only if you are confident in your actions, S5/S6) It is better to use the branded Roborock app - there are more stable updates.
| Model vacuum cleaner | Support for the Russian language | Minimum firmware version | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum 1S | Yes. | 3.5.8_004024 | Requires a change of region to Russia or Europe |
| Dreame D9 | Yes (partially) | 4.2.1_200514 | Voice prompts remain in English |
| Viomi V2 | No. | β | Only Chinese/English, Russian is not in firmware |
| Roborock S6 | Yes. | 1.5.8_001630 | Use the Roborock app, not Mi Home |
| Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Lite | Yes. | 3.3.9_003120 | Russian added in the update of 2022 |
Method 4: Alternative management applications (if Mi Home is not suitable)
If standard methods don't work, you can try third-party apps, which often have more flexible settings and support Russian even for "unofficial" regions.
- π± Home Assistant + Xiaomi Miio integration allows vacuum cleaner control over local network without Xiaomi cloud.
- π€ Yandex Alice (via Xiaomi skill) Voice commands will be in Russian, but the app menu is not.
- π Mi Home Alternative (unofficial client) has Russian localization and advanced settings, but requires manual token configuration.
To connect via Home Assistant:
- Install Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi or other server.
- Add Xiaomi Miio integration through Settings β Devices and Services β Add integration.
- Enter. IP-vacuum cleaner address and token (it can be obtained through the Mi Home application or miio-cli script).
- Configure the interface in Russian in the configuration.yaml file.
β οΈ Attention! Using unofficial apps may violate Xiaomiβs privacy policy, and some features (such as cleaning cards) may not work properly.
π‘
If the vacuum cleaner does not support Russian at the firmware level, the only reliable way is to use third-party applications with localization (for example, Home Assistant) or to accept the English interface.
Frequent mistakes and their solutions
When changing languages, users often face typical problems, and here are the most common ways to address them:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| There is no Russian in the list of languages | The Wrong Region in Mi Home | Change the region to Russia (see Method 2) |
| Vacuum cleaner does not retain tongue after restarting | Firmware or cache failure | Reset the vacuum cleaner settings and update the firmware |
| Mi Home app doesn't see vacuum cleaner after region change | The device is tied to another server | Reset the vacuum cleaner to factory settings and add it again |
| Voice prompts remain in Chinese | There is no Russian voiceover in the firmware | Turn off voice prompts in settings or use third-party apps |
| After updating the firmware vacuum cleaner does not turn on | Incompatible version of the software | Restore the firmware through Mi Home in Restore Mode (hold the power button for 15 seconds) |
If none of these methods helped, check:
- π Compatibility of your model with Russian language (see table above).
- π Updates for Mi Home in Google Play or App Store.
- π§ Contact Xiaomi via the official website (specify the vacuum cleaner model and firmware version).
