Xiaomiβs robot vacuum cleaners can clean an entire apartment autonomously, but sometimes you have to limit their work to one room β for example, if other rooms are undergoing repairs, children are sleeping or there is simply no need for a complete cleaning. Fortunately, modern models support the creation of virtual zones and walls that allow you to set precise boundaries for cleaning.
In this article, we will discuss all the ways to adjust the room limit: from the basic functions in the Mi Home app to advanced features in the Mi Robot App (for models with a high-performance design). LDS-You'll learn how to map the map correctly, save the settings, and avoid the typical errors that make the robot ignore the given boundaries. And if your model doesn't support virtual walls, we'll give you workarounds.
What Xiaomi models support cleaning zoning
Not all Xiaomi robot vacuum cleaners are able to limit room cleaning, a feature only available for models with laser navigation (LDS) or cameras to build a map. Here are the key series that support zoning:
- πΉ Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Pro (and newer versions)
- πΉ Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop P (Laser Series)
- πΉ Xiaomi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Lite+ (card-supported)
- πΉ DreameBot (line from Xiaomi subbrand)
- πΉ Viomi V3 Newer and more advanced (with hybrid navigation)
Laser-free models (such as Mi Robot Vacuum 1S or budget gyroscopes) are not capable of saving a map of a room and therefore do not support virtual walls, and the only way to limit cleaning is to physically close doors or use alternative methods.
Preparation: update of firmware and room map
Before setting up cleaning areas, make sure that the robot has the latest firmware and correctly built a map of your apartment.Outdated software may not support virtual walls or work with errors.
To update the firmware:
- Open the Mi Home app (or Mi Robot App for new models).
- Go to the Devices. β Your robot vacuum cleaner β Settings (βοΈ) β Firmware update.
- If a new version is available, confirm the installation and wait for the completion (the robot will restart).
To build the map:
- π Start the robot in the mode of cleaning the entire apartment (Full cleaning).
- πͺ Close all doors so that the robot does not βleaveβ to other rooms.
- β³ Wait until it passes the entire space (usually 10β30 minutes).
- π After completion, check the map in the application: rooms should be clearly separated, without "holes" or overlays.
π‘
If the robot doesnβt recognize rooms correctly, try running it in the dark (turn off the bright lights) to help the laser define the boundaries more accurately.
Important: If the map is curved (rooms are fused or no walls are available), delete it and restart the process.
- In the application, select the Map β Delete the card.
- Return the robot to base and start cleaning again.
Method 1: Creating virtual walls in Mi Home
The easiest way to confine a robot to one room is to draw a virtual wall in the app, a feature available in Mi Home for most laser models.
Instructions:
- Open the app and select your robot vacuum cleaner.
- Go to the Map tab (usually at the bottom of the screen).
- Click on the icon. β β Virtual Wall (or Zones and Walls in New Versions).
- Select wall type: A normal wall - a robot won't cross a line. A magnetic wall - simulates a physical barrier (for some models).
Swipe your finger across the map to draw the boundary of the room, close the outline, connecting the beginning and end of the line.
Ready.
Now, when you start cleaning, the robot will bypass the area you've drawn, and to undo the restriction, just remove the wall from the same menu.
βοΈ Virtual wall inspection
β οΈ Note: Some models (e.g. Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Lite)+) They drop virtual walls after they're rebooted. If the robot forgets the boundaries, check the settings or update the firmware.
Method 2: Configure cleaning areas in Mi Robot App
For advanced models (such as the DreameBot L10 Pro or Xiaomi Mop 2 Ultra), the Mi Robot App is available with advanced zoning features, where you can not only limit cleaning, but also set priority areas, washing modes and even schedules by room.
How to set up:
- Install the Mi Robot App (available for Android/iOS) and connect the robot.
- Go to the map. β Edit.
- Select Add Zone and circle the desired room.
- In the zone settings, specify: π§Ή Type of cleaning (vacuum cleaner, washing or both modes). π Number of passes (e.g. 2 times for severe pollution). π Schedule (if you need to clean the room at a certain time).
Save the area and start cleaning only for her.
| Function | Mi Home | Mi Robot App |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual walls | β | β |
| Priority areas | β | β |
| Setting the intensity of the wash | β | β |
| Room schedules | β | β |
| Keeping a few cards | β | β (for some) |
The Mi Robot App allows you to save up to 5 different cards (for example, for an apartment and a cottage), whereas the Mi Home supports only one.
Method 3: Using magnetic tapes and physical barriers
If your model does not support virtual walls (for example, Mi Robot Vacuum 1 or Viomi SE), you can use physical limits:
- 𧲠Magnetic tape -- sold as a bundle with some robots or separately, glued to the floor and creates an invisible barrier.
- πͺ Door sills β robots rarely exceed 2 cm.
- πͺ Pet gates - can be adapted for vacuum cleaner.
How to install magnetic tape:
- Clean the floor surface of dust and grease.
- Stick the tape along the boundary of the room (magnetic side up).
- Make sure there are no gaps greater than 10 cm between the strips.
- Test the robot β it must stop or turn around when approaching the tape.
β οΈ Attention: magnetic tapes lose their effectiveness over time (especially on carpets) and may unstick.
What if the robot ignores the tape?
Common mistakes and their solutions
Even when properly configured, the robot can ignore virtual walls or zones, and these are typical problems and ways to fix them:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Robot crosses a virtual wall | Outdated firmware | Update the software through the app |
| Zones are not saved after rebooting | Card failure | Remove the map and rebuild it. |
| Robot gets lost in the room | Weak Wi-Fi signal | Move the router closer or use a repeater |
| The app doesn't show the map | No geolocation rights | Allow access to location in phone settings |
If the robot stubbornly ignores the settings, try resetting it to factory settings:
- In the app, go to Settings β General β Resetting.
- Confirm the reset (robot will reboot).
- Start cleaning again to build the map.
π‘
Before resetting, save the current map (if possible in your model) β otherwise you will have to build it from scratch.
Alternative methods of limiting cleaning
If none of the above methods are suitable (for example, you have an old model without card support), use these options:
- π Power outage: physically move the dock to the right room and close the doors. The robot will only remove the area where it can return.
- π± Voice commands: For models with Alice or Google Assistant support, you can say βStart cleaning in the living roomβ (requires pre-configuration of rooms in the smart home).
- β±οΈ Manual start: transfer the robot to the desired room, press the Spot Cleaning button and close the door.
For models without a laser (such as the Mi Robot Vacuum 1), the only reliable way to do this is to physically isolate.
- πͺ Door stops or hooks.
- 𧱠Cardboard boxes or furniture as a barrier.
- π§ Homemade "gates" of plastic tubes.
